Super Falcons star Ashleigh Plumptre has praised Nigeria’s Flamingos despite their semi-final defeat to Colombia at the FIFA U-17 women’s World Cup in India on Wednesday.
After 90 minutes of football ended 0-0, the game went to penalty shootout with the Flamingos losing 6-5.
Omamuzo Edafe had the chance to win it for the Flamingos but missed the decisive spot kick which would have sealed a final berth.
The game then dragged into sudden death and Comfort Folorunsho was her effort saved by the Colombian keeper.
And despite the defeat, Plumptre praised players of the Flamingos for going far in the tournament.
“What a team this U17 group are! Flamingoes, we are SO proud of you – @NGSuper_Falcons!” Plumptre wrote on Twitter.
“Heartbreaking to go out on penalties but what a journey. The epitome of team spirit and togetherness.”
The Flamingos will now face either Germany or Spain in the third-placed match on Sunday.

Very poor team always depending on penalties to advance. At best we just blocked the opportunity of USA to possibly win this tournament
Look at this tribalist, you finally popped out your moronic head out. You have been quiet all this while, now that the team lost you want to win some brownie points, oga better go back to your cage and let us have peace. if the other teams were that spectacular, why didn’t they win in regulation time.
If flamingoes are depending on penalties what are other teams depending on?.why didn’t the USA win within regulation time. Also why didn’t Columbia win within 90mins
.pls let’s also watch before vomiting nonsense in public
The Nigerian babies tried. We are all very proud of their supreme efforts. At this stage of the competition, whoever wins have to depend on the mother-luck to see them through. Let’s hope we come home with the bronze. BRAVO!!!!!!!!
Someone asked why USA and Colombia did not win during regulation time, and my simple answer is that that singular element of luck eluded both teams when they squared up against our penalty-dependent Flamingos. I am sure the person did not watch both matches to come here and spew that garbage. If he/she had, and cannot confess that his/her blood pressure did rise in the course of both games, then the person passes as the greatest liar on earth! Both the USA and Colombia thrashed us in all statistics of the games with each hitting the woodwork. Imagine the plethora of chances against us that were not converted and juxtapose that with our near-lame attack that the best shot on target could not even pass for a back pass. If not New Zealand who were unarguably the weeping team of the group, which other country did the team convincingly triumph over? They say the broke record by qualifying for the Semis for the first time, yes but via penalties which have been tagged “anybody’s game”! I owe no apology to anyone, the team was simply lackluster. It was a team that qualified for the main tournament with an offside goal against Ethiopia and the coach failed to beef up the team in the runup to the finals for reasons and sentiments best known to him. Maybe there are one or two talents but overall, an awful display not pleasing to the eyes. Even the defence that was being praised, I saw some terrible gaffes that would have cost the team the game within normal time if not for the failure of the opposing team to punish such gaffes. We must make conscious efforts to always select the best which in the eyes of majority of Nigerian soccer loving fans, in fact, represents the best on offer.
@Chudynak, surely you have a problem with this team simply because it was predominantly Yoruba players. Are they not Nigerians?
You never gave them a chance from the beginning after a narrow loss to Germany, now they advanced to Semi final , a feat never achieved before where they narrowly lost by penalty shootout. Instead of praising them, you come here to spew rubbish say na only luck carry them this far. So that kind of luck no sari the U-20 (Predominantly IGBO) Girls that lost in the Q-finals against a lowly rated Netherlands?
Let us give honour to whom it’s due and stop being bitter tribalist bro
Please, ignore that psycho. He is an irredeemable bigot. Many of them abound on this site.
LMFAO….
GOD BLESS YOU @DR BANKS and @SUNNY…
I talked on the issue of being TRIBALISTIC here the other time and some PEOPLE were trying to defend snd CONFUSE themselves with the TERM…
WE know all of them on this FORUM… Even though back then they were all PRETENDING and HYPOCRITICAL about it…
LMFAO…
LMFAO…
I mean WE all KNOW who are the BIG CRITICS of EGUAVEON on this FORUM..
My man, you are talking trash!!!! We all saw the match together, it has nothing 5o do with luck but hard work, The flamingos greatest asset is their backline and that’s why they shut out more gifted teams like USA and Colombia, it has nothing to do with luck but hard work and determination. If you claim that it was luck that took them this far, Why didn’t this luck take our SE to the world cup in Qatar, let me tell you, efforts begats luck.
Yeye man, Typical “Ajokuta Ma Momi” Stonehead
These guys are so backward that with people like this who have ingrained tribalistic complexes moving around in the general population, it may have to take drastic measures to remove such elements from civilised (or trying to be civilised) society.
Look at this jobless, feckless yob, kicking off because a team representing a country he purports to be part of achieved something never before done and he comes here to moan because they were all “Yorubas”
Listen Chudynak- You little man, you have many problems if it is the tribes of people in a multi-tribe country like Nigeria that is giving you sleepless nights. It means there is no hope for you because the real war is out there but foolish people like you will be fighting the wrong people because you are fixated on your own ignorance and lack of exposure to know what you really should be expending what energy you have on.
You my friend are what we call a “hot mess” – My advice is to sort your shit out and be a part of the solution rather than being the MAIN PROBLEM
Complete DOSSER!
“Our world is not divided by race, color, gender or religion. Our world is divided into wise people and fools. And fools divide themselves by race, color, gender, or religion.”……. Mohamad Safa
Epic….!!!
Say no more.
This surmises it all.
On this one, you’ve said it all.
Am PROUD of YOU too PLUMPTRE!!
Wait until you see Laddan Bosso’s team. Thos eof us who saw his performance before and during the world stage are already crying now. Why would this guy be appointed to be any of our national team coach again, Amaju Picnic? Appointing Ladan Bosso to be the U20 coach is one of the disservice you did to Nigeria despite the fact that you know his capability.
