Alex Iwobi suffered a horrible ankle injury in Friday’s third round Emirates FA Cup fixture between Manchester United and Everton at Old Trafford.
United progressed into the next round after a 3-1 win against struggling Everton who are now winless in their last four games in all competitions (three defeats, one draw).
With just two minutes into the second half, Iwobi raced towards United’s area but twisted his ankle following a strong tackle from Tyrell Malacia.
The Super Eagles forward was stretched off and had to be replaced by Abdoulaye Doucoure on 51 minutes.

United got off to a good start as Antony slide to tap home Marcus Rashford low cross from the left to make it 1-0 in the 4th minute.
Everton hit back on 14 minutes through Conor Coady who slammed the ball into the net after David De Gea fumbled a right wing cross.
Coady then turned villain as he poked home Rashford’s cross into his own net to put the home side 2-1 ahead.
And in the 97th minute Rashford converted from the penalty spot to register United’s third.

Do we have a player that can effectively replace iwobi in the super eagles? I doubt.
We suffer each time iwobi doesn’t play..

I pray Iwobi is back by then. In his absence, Aribo hasn’t really stepped up to the plate if truth be told. I was expecting huge performances from him against Ghana across two legs but I was let down massively as he struggled to stamp his authority. Frank Onyeka – also injury prone – does not have the pitch presence to shoulder the responsibility. He too was a ghost against Ghana in the second leg as the second attacking midfielder.

Etebo, in the short term, is one player who can still hold that role with the sheer force of his physicality and years of experience and skills. Forget Iheanacho: he has no legs and is often let down by poor touch and weak long range shots.
Hopefully Peseiro will have an ace up his sleeves for that role should Iwobi need spend time recuperating. Who knows? He might gift wrap a most unlikely yet deadly alternative to Iwobi – and other absent/injured SE players – in this new year.
The man wants to win next January’s Afcon, he can only do that without overlying on a narrow band of players.
