Newcastle cool interest in Benfica midfielder

Newcastle now appear unlikely to sign Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris on loan on deadline day but arrivals are expected.

Manager Rafael Benitez’s repeated calls for reinforcements appear to have been answered as the Magpies are set to secure a club-record deal to land Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United and left-back Antonio Barreca on loan from Monaco.

The duo have arrived in Newcastle ahead of their proposed moves, but it appears as if the Premier League club have cooled their interest in Samaris.

Reports indicate the Magpies are struggling to reach an agreement with Benfica and the form of Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden, who both started in the 2-1 win over Manchester City, has made the signing of a new midfielder less of a priority regardless, although the deal is not necessarily dead.

If Newcastle do bring in Samaris then Hayden is expected to move on, with West Brom linked, as he is keen to be closer to his family in the Midlands but as it stands the 23-year-old seems set to remain at St James’ Park until the end of the season at least.
