2022 WCQ: Osimhen On Target As Eagles Edge Cape Verde In Mindelo, Soars Atop Group C

2022 WCQ: Osimhen On Target As Eagles Edge Cape Verde In Mindelo, Soars Atop Group C

The Super Eagles of Nigeria came from a goal down to beat Cape Verde 2-1 to make it two wins out of two in Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Estadio Municipal Aderito Sena, in Mindelo on Tuesday, Completesports.com reports.

A Victor Osimhen equalizer and an own goal from Kenny Rocha, secured the hard fought win for the Eagles.

With the win, the Eagles now go six points and three points ahead of second placed Liberia.

Gernot Rohr had to make a lot of changes in his starting eleven due to the absence of most of the regulars with the likes of Kenneth Omeruo, Ahmed Musa, Chidozie Awaziem, Innocent Bonke, Kingsley Michael and Chidera Ejuke all starting.

Also, the game saw Musa make his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles, joining Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama to reach the figure.

The Eagles will be in action again in the qualifiers in October when they will face Central African Republic in a double header.

Musa had the first chance of the game in the 6th minute from a Shehu Abdullahi low cross but he blazed his effort.

The home team then took the lead on 18 minutes against the run of play as Dylan Tavares got to a long cross before hitting a left-foot strike which beat Maduka Okoye at his near post.

In the 27th minute Ejuke almost drew the Eagles level with a curler but the home team keeper Vozinha palmed over the bar.

The Eagles eventually equalized on 30 minutes after Osimhen pounced on a rebound, following a poor clearance by Kelvin Pires who directed Jamilu Collins’ cross toward goal.

With three minutes left in the first half Ejuke tried to aim his curler into the top corner but Vozinha punched away for a corner.

The Eagles first chance on goal fell to Musa in the 57th minute after good cross from Osimhen but his weak shot failed to trouble Cape Verde keeper.

On 67 minutes a long ball from Collins to Ejuke saw the CSKA Moscow bearing down on goal before the assistant referee raised his flag for offside.

With 19 minutes left the Eagles made a double change with Henry Onyekuru and Terem Moffi replacing Musa and Simon.

Onyekuru almost marked his introduction with a goal a minute later off a counter but his left strike was saved.

In the 76th minute the Eagles were gifted the second goal after Kenny Rocha intended back pass went over his keeper and over the line.

With eight minutes left Zaidu Sanusi and Paul Onuachu went in for Osimhen and Ejuke.

Vagner Diaz almost equalized for the host on 88 minutes after connecting with a diving header from a long cross which went inches off target.

  • Ejuke is a very dynamic player who can be a play maker if given a free role…..I think coach should give Ejuke more playing time…..He was the biggest threat for Nigeria interms of Goal threat……Moses’s pace is a delight to watch with his elegant style of football….. Osimhen is as usual always hungry to get on the ball and make something happen…..Ejuke is the man of the match and I hope Today match has earned him another shot at the first eleven of SE.

Good one. We sit at the top of the group. That’s exactly where we want to be. Congratulations to the coach, crew and the entire team. We appreciate u guys for delivering against the odds. We wanted a draw but rohr and his team got a win for us instead. Shame on haters. Bad day for them… Lol

    • Jide Dola 3 years ago

Lol, very big bad day for them, Ejuke is a wonderful baller, combination of Ejuke and chukwueze will be wonderful. I saw Ejuke, Collins and Michael gel well today. Very important 6points aswell

  • Chima E Samuels 3 years ago

Cape Verde has given us a beautiful away 3points congratulations to Nigeria, midfield was decent but the defender named Awaziem and Okoye is an awaiting time bomb if we don’t search for proper back up to our defense in the frame of Izuchukwu and also integrate the Israeli based goalkeeper into the team because I don’t believe okoye can be relied on against an all round attacking team like Senegal or Algeria. I also want to tell the coach that Musa is past his best days as he is clueless and tossed around by the Cape Verde defense in such a shameful manner. Markus Abraham should be give more opportunities rather to develop along Ejuke as back up wingers. The team point 9 remains the best.

Rohr’s timely change added pressure to the attack that led to the goal so I give him 70% pass today and he should continue listening to the progressive team.

    • Oakfield 3 years ago

Kindly shove it up your sorry ass, he doesn’t need ur useless commendation. U indirectly sighted the sack of the Egyptian coach just yesterday bcs they played a draw with Gabon thinking that rohr and his team would slip today just to justify your well planned attacks on why rohr should be sacked in the middle of world cup qualifiers, after all Egypt of all countries did so why won’t we but God as usual has always got the back of that man. U see, u can’t fight someone whom God has blessed. U, omo9ja and co felt we shall be humiliated today but God disappointed u people. In fact, God just rub the shame for una faces well well in such a way that one could clearly see your pale faces from thousands of miles away. Infact the stench of shame can be perceived miles away. God just scatter una plans today. We know u people. Rohr is an anointed servant of God. He is serving a supreme being, that’s why he’s been surviving everything that has been thrown at him here, by the nff and the Useless ex cricket internationals. Imaging cape Verde doing the job for us by themselves by scoring an own goal. Lol… It’s not normal bro, na God dy do am for am. So, stop fighting this man needlessly.

Hahahahaha…..LMAOOOo….we can read the discontent at these victories in their comments even though they think they have masked it with sweet words…..LMAOOOoo. They know no matter how much they rant, they have once again failed to convince themselves and find reasons for Rohr to be sacked…..LMAOOOo.

See as God take shame devil. Enemies who were lying in wait for our downfall all crawling back to their covens with tails between their legs…..LMAOOOo. Let us draw our next match now and you will see their true colours….all of them….LMAOOO

6 points, top of the group qualfication for next round almost guaranteed by the time we play CAR…..LMAOOOo…their “worstest” PE teacher mechanic who is not even fit to be a janitor at Barca is about to once again do what their guadiolas failed at…..LMAOOooo……LMAOOOo.

See all of them wanting to claim credit…..LMAOOoo. When the SE win its them or the players alone….when the coach draws not to talk of lose it is the coach alone….LMAOOOoo

Some people have zero shame……including people whose car consume more than $100 worth of petrol in less than a week…..LMAOOOO

      • Oakfield 3 years ago

Loool… No mind them jare Nwanne. Na we dy here. It would be another qualification with a game to spare in the offing again bro. Smooth sailing. We’ve never had it this good. Imagine, world cup qualifiers have suddenly looked like ordinary inter house sports games for the super eagles under this man’s watch. Lol…. Their guardiolas no even fit do am. In fact, one of them had to run away like a mad man when the heat became too much for him to bear. Ndi ara. Lol!

        • GLORY 3 years ago

lolzzzzzzz…. hahahahahaha…. abeg everytime i here inter-house sport I dey struggle to contain my belly butter flies. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBOOOOOY.

Hehehehe…..abi now, Glory, of what use is a PE teacher without inter-house sports….? LMAOOOoo

      • And you people think you are making a fun of someone that is making valuable calls for his country? Skin pain no good o Oakfield and Dr Drey. Only a few will understand what shallow mind means my brothers that is why we have too many ignorant people talking tough here and a lot of you are not excluded. JimmyBall and Chima way of reasoning for me is more realistic and telling compared to follow me I slap you dudes here. It is a beautiful day for Nigeria we overcame the hurdles of Cape Verde.

U no like am, me I go use am demo
U no like am, me I go use am pose,
Ejuke na em dey reign, ebe ano
Make unu come see soccer oooo!

Who did Ejuke offend? A player of this quality, no invitation to the national team? Abi we no like better thing?
From today onward, things have to change!
If Ejuke can just be more productive with goals and assists, his market value will skyrocket. He has the game. He just needs to produce more.

    • Chima E Samuels 3 years ago

Markus is the next I want to be frequently unleashed alongside Ejuke. Kalu and Chuku aways starts you know!

      • Yes bro Markus would easily make a second option of trickery and pace. The own goal for the second goal was a moment of madness that big teams strikes on less experience teams coming from the constant deep pressing and pacy wingers looking for opportunities to pounce on any loose ball.

    • @Pompei He Offended @Dr Drey and CO because we were questioning WHY he is being overlooked for the likes of MUSA.. Or have you forgotten but come oo @Peompei were you not one of Rohr Lovers??. Attacking us for suggestion he Drops Musa for Ejuke after his beautiful cameo against Tunsia last year? an honest observation.

You sabi me na, gist no de pass my front. when I do not comment bros I am reading

      • pompei 3 years ago

Mbanu, I no be Rohr lover. If the man was not getting us into tournaments, I would have been calling for his sack louder than Omo9ja. In fact, na Omo9ja go dey beg me to cool down!
But the man has done a WONDERFUL JOB! This is a man who is being owed salary. How does he manage to motivate boys who are being owed bonuses for 2 years? The man is a miracle worker, honestly. To succeed in such a chaotic and unpredictable environment, working with NFF Onigbese, the chronic debtors at large who are owing everyone they come in contact with? It takes a special person to continue to deliver in such circumstances. Mind you, I know Rohr has his shortcomings. His late subs, his match reading, his seeming lack of enthusiasm and confidence, but for me, his positives far outweigh his negatives. If we want a world class, perfect coach, are we ready to spend the EGO that it takes? Rohr that we have who is qualifying us to tournaments with games to spare, na so so owe we dey owe am. Is it Guardiola or Nuno Espirito Santo, or Klopp that will come here to work without pay?
So I no be Rohr lover. Just an honest man who gives credit where it is due.
Talking about Ejuke, you must be mistaking me for some one else. I have always loved that boy and wanted him in the team. I gave him the nickname EBE-ANO. Yes, I did. It is not my job to pick the starting eleven, or to dictate to Rohr who to invite to camp. All I asked for is that Ejuke should always be available for selection, because the boy is good! And my position on this remains the same.

        • eheh I for dey ask myself Lol.. No wahala Nwanne. I dey ur side o. Ejuke is a superb talent he should have been given more of a chance after that cameo, but as always in life sometimes a bad situation can lead to opportunities just aske Kelechi and Leicester City.

I will be gutted if a player like him misses out based on Quota system I know this may sound biased but for fear of not coming across as a tribal Biggot by some left wing Rohr Lovers. Let me use another player.. Okay I can’t think of any because the first 3 names are Igbo Chidera Ejuke, Samuel Kalua and Henry Onyekuru.

So I hope no one labels me a Biggot Loolz

  • JimmyBall 3 years ago

We must be frank with ourselves… if we want to see young players like Nwakali, Ejuke, Markus grow and unleash their potential then some old players need to leave the scene… nobody can play football forever especially when you are past your prime. If players who have served well dont leave… the younger ones waiting in the wings wont have opportunity to show what they can do… we lacked a bit of creativity today in our upper midfield… and Nwakali comes to mind, see how Kingsley Michael performed today… give younger players opportunity… to me, I will pick Kingsley Michael anyday to pair Ndidi… was his game not evident today? Ball know im people!!!

  • Adeniyi 3 years ago

God of football was on side today! Up Super eagles.

This is a team that we could have beaten 3-0 or more of only we were clinically in the final third. My assessment of the players

Okoye cannot be our number at AFCon…that would be a disaster
Omeruo has been in the SE set up since 2013 yet he plays like he is just a new boy who is struggling to impress…although he did better later in the game, we can’t rely on him and Awaziem as our backup defender…it clearly showed that they play in division 2

I won’t see much about the midfielders but we need more creativity there.

Musa Is almost done with the SE. Nzogbu zogbu Ejuke eyii! Star boy Ejuke stood high and tall today, good run, good dribbles, good decision making (it can be better tho). Osimhen remains as hungry as ever, clearly he is poacher, I can’t wait to see him and Awoniyi together. Moses Simon had a horrid first half to be forgotten.

We could have punished the Sharks wella in this game but good to have the 3 points

As for Oga Rohr….kudos for another win for him. I could see he was able to Moses Simon as he improved how game in the second half.

We missed the regulars but good to see the second team deliver!!!

  • I will carry this message to all Chat Threads TODAY!!!

YES OOOO Rohr finally did it he, He finally got the Courage to listen to well wishing Nigerian critics like Myself @Jimmyball, @Omo9ja (to an extent) etc apologies if I never named you but you know your intelligent selves, who QUESTIONED (?) his tactics, Late Substitutions and his inability to hall Musa off early in crucial games.. okay i get it Musa needed his 100 caps. okay o he has finally got it. Thank you Jehovah maybe we can finally see his backside now. Back to the issue at hand..

You see Rohr adoring fans can’t take credit for this victory infact that would be criminal considering all that we have passed through on this forum CSN over the last 3 years or so call it 4. if you look at it from all angles the only reason Rohr won today is because he did what we his critics have been advising for years. Make substitutions early and haul off Musa if he is not contributing because I am sure even his “so called Fans” can now see after today he adds no Value to our attacking play. Also He utilized Onyekuru early a player we his critics always clamoured for granted injury and unavailability to some key players but he took his chance, look at the result he also started Ejuke a very talented player who if I can remember clearly is another player that WE his critics clamored for and questioned his ommssion from Match days at the expenses of Musa in the past and also his late introduction in some games, what happened his adoring fans were at our throats at every angle.

In the end, I think it is clear that Rohr won an away game against a tough team because, he did all the tactical things right Today. his only mistake was starting Musa and sing Kalu as a scape goat for Musa because had Kalu started against the Cape Verde team or was introduced early the score line could have been 4-1.

Again it will be highly CRIMINAL for any Rohr fans on CSN to even stretch their fingers and lay any praises on Rohr without acknowledging that he performed what the Nigerian Critics have been asking him to Today. Long may this kind of tactical display from Rohr today continue. Also I am happy that Rohr finally seen how he has been shooting himself in the foot with Musa because the Impact of Onyekuru was like from gear 1 to 5.

They have been saying it but I never believed, I can now confirm that your foolishness is second to none, we should rather appreciate the critics for helping the coach to invite and use his players to execute a match, I don’t know the level of your education but you sound like a local illiterate or someone on some expired tramadol. When the coach looses we should gather here to blame him but when he wins we should appreciate the critics, bia if I was close to you now I would have sincerely given you a brain resetting slap to help calm down your legendary stupidity….. Nonsense and Iwunze!

    Congratulations to Nigeria!
We will get better and Stronger because God no dey sleep!!!

Congrats to the progressives in the house. Today’s result shows that our confidence in Rohr was not misplaced. He may not be Guardiola or Klopp, but he has been doing the job, and we are on our way yet again to QUALIFYING WITH GAMES TO SPARE!
    Rohr, you do well ooo!
NFF Onigbese, please pay this man and our players their entitlements!!!
Progressives, I troway salute. We moooooove!

Hahahahaha….we are waiting for the useless ones who are good at keeping useless records to hide their shame and come to tell us Rohr has created another record by being the 1st coach to defeat Cape Verde…..LMAOOOoo….since that is only what they are apparently good at and useful for….LMAOooo

Because we lost narrowly against Cameroon with almost our B team in a friendly, they found their long lost voices….LMAOOOO, is it not the same B team we have used to defeat the same CPV who hammered the same Cameroon…? So which one is more significant now…? Which one has borne more consequence now….? LMAOOooo

They should all continue to count the number of records we create in friendly matches….LMAOOoooo….we the sensible ones will focus on competitive matches and matches that matter most….LMAOOOoo

  • Oakfield 3 years ago

Nff and co, plsssszsss…. Pay this team and their crew. If u don’t do so, thunder that has been doing press up for the last 2 centuries for amadioha forest go strike una starting from those responsible for this mess. Heads would start rolling mysteriously. These useless ex cricket internationals have already begun looking the other way as if nothing happened. As if nothing special was achieved today by the team. You won’t see them come out to congratulate the team just as they came out of their creepy smelly holes in their numbers days ago telling us why rohr should not lose this match. Shame on them!!! Akporobie, amuneke, odegbami (chief ex cricket international), oliseh, amokachi, finidi and co. Shame on all of you!

  • People complain about Rohr but he is a pragmatic coach and football has changed nobody is playing to the gallery and then lose like the old Arsenal will play tiki taka and lose.

Winning is all that matters even amateurs league.

Kingsley Michael and Ejuke can move into the 1st team. Bonnke plays like a homebased player.

    • Mr. Nice 3 years ago

Thank you for that brilliant submission, I also notice that Gernot Rohr doesn’t joke with competitive matches, when he’s experimenting with friendly matches and inconsequential matches our so called critics union of CSN will be all over the place analyzing their stupidity all over the place. The only matches Gernot Rohr has truly lost has super eagles coach in his 5 years capacity as super eagles coach are those of South Africa, Argentina at the world cup and Algeria at the nation’s cup, if you don’t see this as a successful story of 5 years I wonder what else we want in a coach!

    • JimmyBall 3 years ago

@John… Bonke did OK today. The way he tackled Cape Verde midfielders in the first half was his job to break their play, you could see Cape Verde were also rugged… Bonke was there to match their physical intimidation… though he could and should do better, he did his job today. We must not forget that was a synthetic pitch and once you come down you will either have your knee peeled or body… ball bounces awkwardly… We should watch Bonke for Malmo in Champions league and see him better… but for me… in DM position it should be Michael and Ndidi henceforth. Onyeka and Etebo could start from bench… Michael it is who looks more like an assured defensive midfielder to me other than Ndidi… he needs to be starting for Super Eagles alongside Ndidi.

      • Baijai007 3 years ago

Michael over Aribo?! You’re a joker! No wonder no one takes you serious here and thank God you’re not the coach.

Everyone has whom they’re sharing conversation with because of problems of reasoning with backwards minds. Today’s win was normal as I wrote on previous tweets I will post a copy of it when I find. • Please Forumites let us take it easy….. enough of this abuses and pointing of fingers…..We won and we are supposed to be drinking Hero beer now instead we are cursing each other……STOP…….we won and all the Glory goes to God almighty who made it so…..It’s not the critics that made it so……it’s not the praise singers that made it so either…….It’s God and we should all chil out and pray for the team and the coach……we should also appreciate coach Rhor who has exceeded expectations for the past 5years incharge of SE……Even though Rhor has his own shortcomings as a human,he has also tried in handling a complex nation like ours for 5years……Let us give him a chance and give him more time…… please don’t hesitate to criticize or advice him when you notice any shortcomings in his approach but please people should stop calling for him to be replaced…….I just have this feeling inside me that if this guy should leave us our football will plunge into the wilderness which it was before Rhor came.

    • Dr. Drey 3 years ago

Who else are claiming credit for tonight’s victory apart from regressive backward thinking never-do-wells who never give credit to a coach who has picked close to 80% of necessary points from competitive games he has led his team to….?
Credit for SE wins to them should NEVER go to Rohr….it has to go to them or the players alone….LMAOOO. Rohr only does his job the few times we lose…..LMAOOoo

    • @AKP Never as long as we are blessed with this generation NEVER!!!… Correct me if I am wrong. But give me credit for Confidently saying that this generation is blessed with X Factor players (Lol a word @Dr Drey hates when I use). So that will definitely not be the case.

You see SA got a good Coach Hugo Broos takes an average Cameroonian team and downed favourites Senegal in the Final of 2017 AfCOn or have you forgotten or the coach of Burkina Faso in 2013 that lost to us in the Final or a Herve Renaed a sound European coach that won’t select with senitiments and only select the BEST!!! and is tactically solid you see I will say again the only reason Rohr is looking good is because we are blessed with a again X FACTOR generation you see bros talent is a generational thing hence you won’t find a Pele or CR7 or Messi in every generation or they won’t be littered every where. Meaninig much like Ivory Coast had with Drogba and yaya and Kolo we have ours now..

My only concern is how long we will keep Rohr and are we denying ourselves the opportunity of having a sound coach that has done it with less talented squads like Broos and Burkina Coach or, Herve who if you guys recall Ivory Coast were running the risk of having their star studded generation retiring without a trophy or silverware to their name in step Herve to the rescue. Guys I fear we may have the similar situation if we don’t change Rohr a sports car with powerful horse power but with an average driver behind the wheels. Watch out for SA they just beat Ghana (who is coaching them you guessed it Hugo Broos) and SA team is very average. A word is enough for the wise

      • Coachie 3 years ago

I saw the match, SA beat a depleted Ghana team due to the Covid-19 restrictions and you are here praise-singing them as if they just beat Ghana team-A.
May we no dey make yeye analogy joor

        • @Coachie the point is yes they were only 4 or so. but the core were still there players from all over SPain, Germany and Italy.. also Broos SA Squad is all locally based or in Africa because If I am correct their star Tau is in Egypt again..

      • Herve Renard did it with Zambia in 2012 with a average squad, and proved he is no flash in the pan by Rescuing a Talented squad Ivory Coast in 2015 who were in danger of reaching twilight without silverware.

What will he do with our gem of a squad?? What did he do with a star studded Moroccan side?? By the way how do you expect to pay $1m plus a month for an Herve Renard who is currently making cool dollars in Saudi Arabia??? Bro I thought you’re smarter than that. You can now see that we have a very solid bench under Rohr?? That’s what really matters as far as this international window is concerned. The jury is still out on some players, but we have 4 more games to find that out. If you can predict the future then keep yapping.

  • Ejuke is going to eventually displace either Aribo or Iwobi and Etebo will be displaced by Michael
