2022 World Cup: Fernandes Scores Brace As Portugal Beat Uruguay, Seal Round Of 16 Berth

Portugal have sealed a place in the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup after defeating Uruguay 2-0 thanks to a Bruno Fernandes’ brace in the second half.

The Europeans had dominated possession before Fernandes’ 54th minute cross floated past Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, who was rooted to the spot as Cristiano Ronaldo rose to head the ball and initially celebrated the goal as his.

Fernandes scored the second in injury time after a penalty was awarded for handball following a video review.

Uruguay, who had knocked Portugal out of the 2018 World Cup, will rue a string of chances on the break: midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur skipped past three players only to see his shot brilliantly saved, Maxi Gomez hit the post and Luis Suarez shot into the side netting.

Portugal’s second win in two games put them top of Group H on six points and heading into the last 16. Uruguay, third on one point, must beat Ghana in their final group game to have a chance of progressing.

Ghana is going to meet a desperate Uruguay. However, Ghana only needs a draw now to go through.

Ghana will qualify for the second round.Uruguay will not stop Ghana they’re not that good from what I have seen so far.
Besides Uruguay isn’t a traditional midfield or ball playing side rather they thrive on strong powerful attacking play with a solid rear, they’ve always played that way.
Ghana will match them in midfield and from what I have seen so far Ghana is a side brimming with confidence always has,I like the determination the way they approach games like their life’s depends on it,something I have not seen in our senior men’s team. Our under 17 side play too with so much confidence that’s the tonic you need to be at the top.
Our senior sides both male and female are mentally weak especially playing against big sides, they usually lose games before it even get started, that’s why the star players of the opposition must score against us even when we have scored first we still concede a couple to lose because in their heads they’ve tried enough to even score one.
It’s a mental thing and the solution to it is to have a few star players in the team who plays in the best clubs in European football like Psg,Bayern,Manchester United/city teams like that lets say we have three players in this teams probably that could lift the confidence level of our boys.
