2023 AFCONQ: Super Eagles Beat Guinea-Bissau In Bissau, Reclaim Group A Top Spot

Super Eagles of Nigeria avenged their shock first leg loss to Guinea-Bissau thanks to a Moses Simon penalty which sealed a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers on Monday, Completesports.com reports.

The Super Eagles, on nine points, reclaim top spot in Group A from Guinea-Bissau who are second.

Head coach Jose Peseiro made five changes with Semi Ajayi, Kenneth Omeruo, Frank Onyeka, Terem Moffi and Moses Simon making their starting eleven.

After dominating the early part of the first half, the Eagles broke the deadlock for the penalty spot which they held on till the end.

Omeruo had Super Eagles first attempt on goal in the 2nd minute but his header off Alex Iwobi’s cross was Palmer away for a corner.

Guinea-Bissau had a chance of their own in the 5th minute but the effort went just over the bar.

In the 7th minute Moffi’s goal bound shot inside the box was blocked away for a corner.

Victor Osimhen almost broke the deadlock on 23 minutes after a Guinea-Bissau player was robbed of the ball but the Napoli striker could not direct his shot towards goal.

The Super Eagles deservedly took the lead on 30 minutes as Simon converted from the penalty spot after a foul on Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Samuel Chukwueze could have doubled the Super Eagles on 37 minutes after he was put through on goal but volleyed his effort over the bar.

With five minutes left in the first half Semi Ajayi met a corner with a header which the keeper held well.

In the 55th minute a Guinea-Bissau player ran on to a through pass but Francis Uzoho quickly came out of his goal line to claim the ball.

Osimhen had a big opportunity to make it 2-0 on 59 minutes but his low strike hit the post.

Few minutes later Guinea-Bissau almost equalised following a defence splitting pass and at the other end Osimhen surged towards the opponent’s box but missed the target.

In the 67th minute Mama Balde tried a low shot from outside which Uzoho got down well to save.

Substitute Joe Aribo received a pass inside the box from Moses Simon but saw his shot saved by the Guinea-Bissau keeper for a corner on 71 minutes.

Guinea-Bissau continued to pour forward for the equaliser but the Eagles held on to snatch the win.

What is so ‘Super’ about this team?

  • Ndubest 1 year ago

Nothing @Tony infact absolutely nothing to cheer about

  • Thank God

We need someone like Ejuke in the team. Someone that can penetrate strong defense with dribbling and make opponent commit foul I side eighteen just as what happened today.

    God bless Nigeria

    God bless Super Eagles

God bless me and all Nigerians.

I’m happy we back on top of the table.

Congratulations to the team. One would have liked the eagles to wallop the guineans by at least 3 goals to nil to stamp their supremacy but it was not to be. The truth is, African football is fast evolving. We dominated most part of the game just like we did in the first leg but the guineans had their own plans to stem and cushion the attacks of the eagles. This is where the technical prowess of the coach comes to play to find a way thru fortified wall. Getting through a team that parks the bus is not an easy feat. I think, the team played fairly well taking into consideration the evolution of football in Africa. However, If we really want to make it to where we ought to be, the technical crew needs to work on our finishing. Our strikers need to understand that football is all about team play and not all about personal glory. Some of them went for the latter which saw balls that where supposed to be squared to a fellow team mate in the box with in a much better position to score fluffed away as a result of selfishness. Osimhen and chukuweze seemed to be guilty of this. Osimhen on his part tried to justify his form at club level by trying to score the goals himself which adversely affected the team’s scoring abilities. Osayyi Samuel seems to be a wonderful player and really has a bright future if he continues in this trajectory. What a player.

This present super eagles under this present coach should just avoid any match with Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and the mighty Morroco. Especially Morroco. The disgrace for loud.

So outside penalty no goals from open play in 180+ minutes of play, comprising 1 and 2 leg.

    • Did we score against Portugal? All the losses were “clean sheets” in previous games. That means, there is a goal scoring problem in the team.

Nigeria vs Morrocco. The result will be Morrocco 6 Nigeria 0. Pray that Nigeria don’t meet Benin Republic, Ghana, Egypt, Senegal, Algeria, Tunisia, South Africa, Congo Republic, and Togo. Unless the stupid coach brings in Orban and Boniface who may save the team from alter disgrace.

Hmmm it could be true but not always true … It eagles can take 15 mins to study their opponent as Brazil use to do in those days . Dey can beat any team too . Study ur opponent mean dey have to stay in their box not attack attack attack attack which gives their enemy a counter

I think Bright Osayi can play as a right winger even when OlanAina comes back…Ola Ain can go back to playing 2 while they push Osayi up as a right winger…That was his position for QPR before going to Fernabahce..

    • Sunnyb 1 year ago

You’re right bro, Sammy stays in the bench he adds nothing to the team anyway. Osayi and Aina combination at the right flanks can be deadly.

  • Yes we got the 3 point but honestly there is nothing to write home about the game and I also question the technical and tactical ability of the coach. I really dont think he is the best for this job. defensively we are very open each time the opponent comes attacking. no wonder we lost all our first 4 matches, this has nothing to do with the players but the coaching crew. it has never been this bad for the eagles.

    • That’s what happens when your formation is 424, that exposed the midfield and put pressure on your defence. We simply don’t have the players and discipline to prosecute the 442. Our wingers are not disciplined enough to play as wide midfielder/forwards.

I’m still saying it this coach can’t take us anywhere, else just using national football name to build Is C.V , He doesn’t know anything, Tactically, game management he doesn’t have.. there is cohesion amongst the players. Someone who can’t speak good English , how do u expect him to correct the players mistakes , where know of the players fails to creat any chance.. look at a simple tap chuckwuze can just give osimeh to out in back of the nets but he fails to passs the ball. This coach lacks absolutely communications nd everything. imagine what chukwuze nd moses simeon was all playing selfish football… This man need to sacked.. .. Ibrahim gusaau should notice dis now… If u still continue to rely on dis kind of coach to any CAF tournament where u are to play morroco or Senegal or even Ghana..we will be beating black nd blues… This Man should be sacked now.. we you still have time long months to go before Afcon , and get a coach now…. Amuneke is there.. Samson siasa is there.. go get those legends back to our national team

You that is criticizing the coach for not speaking good English, can u speak good English???? Just read your post and found it very hard to understand what u were trying to say. Lots of grammatical errors and mispellings. pls, remove the speck in your eyes first before removing the speck in another man’s eyes. English is not our problem but employing the right person who has the capacity to take us where we ought to be. And by the way, what good has English done for us?????
