2023 U-20 AFCON: ‘Our Focus Now Is The Trophy’ —Gambia Captain Speaks Ahead Flying Eagles Clash

Gambia captain Alagie Saine says the target of he and his teammates now is the 2023 U-20 AFCON title.

Gambia booked a place in the semi-finals of this year’s tournament in Egypt after hammering South Sudan 5-0.

Also, the victory against South Sudan means Gambia qualified for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.

To realise their dream of a first-ever U-20 AFCON title, Gambia must go part Flying Eagles of Nigeria in the semi-finals on Monday.

The Flying Eagles bounced back from an opening day defeat to Senegal with wins against hosts Egypt, Mozambique (group stage) and Uganda (quarter-finals).

And in a video published on CAF’s U-20 AFCON Twitter handle, Saine expressed delight that Gambia made it to the World Cup.

Saine then stated that up next for them is the U-20 AFCON title.

“We qualified for the World Cup and I’m very happy, my teammates are very happy.

“We are coming we are not done yet because we need the trophy,” Saine said.

Gambia have never played in the final of the U-20 AFCON in their history.

Meanwhile, the other semi-final will see Senegal take on Tunisia.

Of course you have a real chance of going all the way judging by your performances so far, sadly, football is a very unpredictable game,so also let that come to mind.
Normally Nigeria  shouldn’t be getting themselves fretting over Gambia but in this tournament they’ve surprised all with a beautiful and an exhilarating brand of football great team spirit we have all experienced in this wonderful Gambian side.
However, experience, pedigree and power could just do it for the Nigerian team against a brilliant but naive Gambian side.
Looking forward to an entertaining game tomorrow.
Good luck to our dear  flying eagles …

These Gambian team has atleast 5 foreign based players with 2 of their players playing for Bayern Munich II and Slava Prague. this will be another tough test for the flying eagles… I wish the flying eagles all the best but SeneGambia is what the Senegalese and the Gambians are looking forward to but just like you said, football is very unpredictable. Let the best team win.

The Gambia is a good team, but it must respect the hierarchy by entering the ranks! I’m not worried about our youngsters for the win! The only team that can resist us a little is Senegal and we will beat them with a small goal to nil in the final.
    Winner Nigeria
    Finalist Senegal
    Third Gambia
    Fourth Tunisia
This is the logic of the classification!
The Gambians, they have to calm down, in their UFOA zone, he is not the boss, it is rather Senegal who beats them all the time. The Gambia will return to the ranks on Monday evening. She will go and play for the bronze medal. Gold and silver are already reserved.

Our focus is the world cup truphy, the flying eagles will bit gambia and battle senegal to pick the 8th title of this turnament. Gambia is a verry skillfull and entertaining side, they always like to do the playing which will make them come all out against a very diciplined and tecknical flying eagles defense that will definately lead to a counter attack, if the eagles take the lead Gambia would like to equal it and that will continue to give us more chances to increase the tally, one thing you cant take from this flying eagles is strenght and tacktics, apart from about three of the starters the rest are very matured in their dicisions, u can hardly catch them unaware, senegal can only win on penalties with the eagles if they turn out to be champions reasons are the eagles have a weak attack and the senegalese diffense is as diciplined like ours, they are also tactical side who always alow eagles to do the playing and attacks when we live space, senegalese are very attentive to lope holes. if we must win them we must make good use of our chances in goal, if that number 7 can be as matured as the number 11, and hopefully if daniel daga comes back to replace that pregnant number 10, against senegal it will be a different ball game, i will also advice the coach to start the number 9 ahead if the 17th who havnt impressed so far, or rather drop both players
for the number 15, switch the number 11 to center allow three of them to interchange according to the riddim, at list, 11,7,and 15 have got the speed needed for these coming games. lastly its very difficult to beat Nigeria in final of this competition according to records, am optimistic we will bring it home.

  • If Bosso wins this tournament he will think he has arrived……If Bosso wins this tournament he will become more stubborn and insist he has the best team in the world…….This U20 team needs all the help it can get……I mean this is not the best u20 Nigerian boys currently naaa…..How can Gambia even dream where Nigeria is in football????…… Gambia is confident Because they have seen us play and there is nothing special in our boys……Bosso should go foreign when it’s time for the world cup……We have Ebenezer Akinsanmiro of inter Milan, Victor Eletu of AC Milan, Gift Orban of Gent, and Many more talents that can turn this team to a world class team…….A good coach should be able to open his mind at times and look outside the box…… Stubbornness does not make you a good coach.
