2023 U-20 W/Cup: Flying Eagles End Unwanted Record, Stun Argentina To Reach Q/finals

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles sent hosts Argentina out of this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup after recording a 2-0 win in Wednesday’s quarter-finals, Completesports.com reports.

Second half goals from Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki saw Ladan Bosso side edge out the record U-20 World Cup winners.

This is the first time ever the Flying Eagles will defeat a South American team at the U-20 World Cup since their debut in the competition in 1983.

After a goalless first half the Flying Eagles opened scoring in the 61st minute through Muhammad.

In the 92nd minute Sarki then added the second goal to send Nigeria into the last eight.

The Flying Eagles will now take on either Ecuador or South Korea in the quarter-finals billed for Sunday, May 4.

In Wednesday’s other round of 16 games, Brazil thrashed Tunisia 4-1 while Italy edged England 2-1.

Each and every time their backs are against the wall, and against heavy criticism, they turn around and DELIVER!!!!!

This is surely history…beating a free-scoring HOME SIDE in front of over 25,000 of their fellow compatriots on a cold San Juan night, speaks a lot. This team are GROWING into this competition; reminds me alot of the late Stephen Keshi’s 2013 squad that did the UNTHINKABLE in Nelson Mandela’s country.

Keep going lads!! Stay away from complacency!

When i said Argentina is out when we were paired together, many argued with me. They didn’t meet any strong team in the group stages and they will be under pressure at home. You’ll can see the result. I wanted us to avoid USA or England at this stage but Argentina, i knew it was going to difficult for Argentina. CONGRATS my Flying Eagles, Brave warriors.

Argentina dumped out of the world cup, on their home turf. What a result by Bosso and the team. I read somewhere that Bosso has been paid for only 3 months out of all the time he’s been working, and the players are also owed match bonuses. NFF, do the needful.
It’s interesting that the 2 goals today were scored by northerners. Very interesting indeed. Some fans that think the north has nothing to offer talent wise may need to have a rethink.
With this result, all eyes will be on Nigeria now. Opponents will have Nigeria under their microscope. However, if the team approaches every game the way they played Italy and now Argentina, they will be tough to beat.

  • Papafem 11 months ago

Where are the haters? Fair-weather fans who shout hosanna today and scream crucify him tomorrow. Toh…the team you predicted won’t get out the group has defeated a powerful host and waiting for the for the next opponent on the 1/4 final. God has defeated the token of the mockers.

    • Greenturf 11 months ago

Someone even suggested the football authorities buy their return tickets ahead of the game wow!He went further saying they should take their luggages to the stadium and head straight for the airport after getting smashed by Argentina that was hilarious though haha…Before the game i wrote a post that without Messi in the mix Argentina is beatable by Nigeria.
Each time we have played Argentina at youth and senior levels Messi’s presence has being the difference but without Messi they’re there for the taking.

      • Messi and/or Maradona (of blessed memory), even Batistuta sef join lol (remember Korea/Japan 2002)

    • Akan Essien 11 months ago

Nobody should be called fair weather fan. God helped us. Argentina were wasteful in many situations. Our prayer is, let the team not rest on her oats which is what most Nigerian team’s do after an emphatic victory over opponents they were not given any chance to win.

I told u guys that we were gonna win if the boys believed in themselves , if they were tactically disciplined and if they got their acts together and thankfully, they ticked all the boxes!!!! They really wowed me with their grit and tactics. I could see boys who were bent on achieving a desired goal together as a unit. A lot of kudos to the coach for doing a good job on the boys even though there are still some grey areas that need to be looked into like the space that is usually left in our midfield which gives our opponents the room to settle and spread passes. They need to be more compact there. Congratulations boys. What a sweet revenge. For the first time in a competitive game, we have had the better of Argentina. I liked the way they cried like babies…hahah…na their turn…hahah. Historically, they’ve never had it easy with us, honestly. It is always sweat and blood, i guess masharano would be in a better position to explain better . ..hahahaha….next game in focus. Keep ur heads up and remain steadfast, everything is possible if you believe.

I was right with my headline : HEAVEN WEPT, FANS SILENCED, AND TEARS IN THE STADIUM AS NIGERIA ELIMINATES HOST ARGENTINA. IT happened GBAM!!!

  • Bobo Colorado Springs 11 months ago

We will be meeting the winner between ECUADOR and SOUTH KOREA, in the 1/4 finals.

    • The team won because the evil one has left Aso Rock for Daura. That man brought so much evil in Nigeria including leaving us with a half dead person to continue.
      Liberation time guys

      • This is the same Buhari during whose reign in 1985 Nigeria won the maiden under 17 World Cup in China. I bet you were still in your mother’s womb then.

        • Godesky 11 months ago

Not the first time! Atlanta 1996, we came from behind twice to beat Argentina 3-1. The only painful one was 2018, we deserved to win that game!
God bless my beloved country NIGERIA!!!

  • These boys are good..

A team who won Italy is not a weak side..

Brazil won only because we rested some boys.. if it was this same team, Brazil won’t score a single goal..

If there is nothing to be proud of in this team it is the pairing of fredick and onwuche.. where on earth did they get those boys from..

I also love how bosso is rotating his wingers. If Jude Sunday fails to perform there is a sarki on the bench and if sarki fails, there is Beji..

    Kudos to the boys..

Again as in the afcon and the wafu, our strikers don’t know how to score goals.. we already have loads of striker in the super eagles

    • Greenturf 11 months ago

“Where on earth did they scout Frederick and Ogwuche!”Haha…I like that,I wonder myself they have been fantastic for the team.

  • I said it that the trophy will be won by any of the three teams that came out from our group. Italy has just defeated England and Nigeria is playing the winner between South Korea vs Ecuador.

Congrat boys for silencing the doubters lol

  • Abdulghani 11 months ago

    Up naija

  • Benjamin Fredrick a rocksolid defender, Ogwuche a boy with balls of steel, Daga a Lion in midfield, Nnadi sleek with the ball, Umeh a fantastic supporting striker, Haliru if you near am, you go chop beating lolz…. Congratulations Flying Eagles, Bosso we the Minna connect hail thee!

  • I must confess I never gave them any chance. They proved me wrong. Best of luck guys.

Defence was solid and the counter punch devastating. A carbon copy of the game against Italy.

  • Ayphillydegreat 11 months ago

I remember Bosso’s team in Canada 2007 in the Quarter Final against Chile. The FlyingEagles outplayed the Chileans with Alexis and Vidal. The game went to extra time and Chile ended up scoring 4 goals in 30 minutes to send us home. It was devastating to watch. That team had Efe Ambrose, Brown Ideye, Elderson Echiejile. Players that went on to have good carers and won the AFCON for Nigeria at senior level.

Bosso has his shortcomings, but I think most of the backlash he get is mostly on sentimental at times IMHO. In terms of identifying future talents Bosso is in the same class as Amunike and Manu Garba. Irrespective of how far they go in this tournament we have something to cheer about.

The emergence of players like Fredrick, Ogwuche, Daga, Nnadi, Eletu, Sarki, Beji, Umeh, even Lawal is all down to him. Argentina are the most successful nation at this level. To beat them in front of their home fans will boost the boys confidence. Congrats to the FlyingEagles of Nigeria. One down Three to go.

    • Future talents indeed. Check the age they quoted on FIFA website and see if most of them would still be relevant in the super eagles in say 5 years time. Bosso does not pick out guys for the future but immediate gains

      • Ayphillydegreat 11 months ago

You can’t name a SuperEagles squad today without Osimhen Chukwueze Iheanacho Awoniyi Ndidi Simon and the likes who played age grade football about 10 years ago and still relevant today.

What evidence do you have about their real ages?? Of course not all of them will make it all the way to the SuperEagles. Some might decide to pursue education while others might decide to go a different career trajectory.

Some of them were in the last U17 team that came second at the AFCON in 2021. The likes of Fredrick Daga Eletu Nnadi and Ogwuche are genuinely young players.

I’m not God to decide wether they can be relevant in the SuoerEagles in the next 5 years. If you can predict the future you tell me. A team that went through WAFU B tournament and AFCON is hurriedly assembled?? Some came in and distinguished themselves along the way.

We beat a South American team at the U20 WorldCup for the first time in history and this is what you have to say? Just because of your issues with Bosso? Irrespective of how far they go in this tournament there are at least 4 to 5 players in this team that will make the SuperEagles squad to 2026 WorldCup. Bookmark this comment and come back to it in 3 years time.

All of you predicted doom even before a ball was kicked in this tournament. They will not make it out of the group. They should book their flights back home and have their luggage with them before facing Argentina. Now it’s how many of them will be relevant in the SuperEagles in 5 years time Lmao!! Make una free Bosso. Ugbade with all his mouth couldn’t take the GoldenEaglets to the WorldCup. Bosso missed Akinsanmiro and some other key players yet the team isn’t even missing them. Ugbade missed two key players and the team collapsed.

I don’t need to watch a player for more than 15 to 20 minutes to know if he’s a talented player or not. Daga Eletu Nnadi Fredrick and Ogwuche are top prospects to watch out for in the SuperEagles after this tournament. I just hope they can be nurtured properly.

I mean this is quite typical of Nigerian teams,  the moment you underrate and count them out they show up with talons displayed.  For us it is when you overpraise them and tell them they’ve arrived that complacency and playing to the gallery sets in.  We’ve seen it time and time again.

The team is workmanlike and that alone can cover up for certain deficiencies, which if we’re being honest, are there for all to see.  However the one place that quality is oozing is in the defensive center back pairing.  Even the spanish speaking commentator was full of praise especially for Ogwuche.

Play to your strengths O Flying Eagles, and live with the outcome.

  • pompei 11 months ago

Nigeria’s biggest opponent now is complacency. If the boys remain humble and focused, the cup is beckoning.
We must not underrate any opponent! Some are already predicting a Brazil vs Nigeria final. Thinking like this is what has always landed us in trouble in the past. Let’s take it match as it comes, and play each game like a cup final. With focus and hard work, anything is possible.

We give all thanks to God Almighty for helping the boys and we also appreciate the boys’committment against all odds.

By tomorrow morning u wil be reading our tactics to beat the next opponent.. . We on sportradio88.0fm.have learnt our lesson. Some of the betting agent are not happy for tell scores to their customers..
Henceforth we will only tell the coach of the team wat and wat to expect from his opponent.
Thank god for yesterday’s referee he wasn’t biased.he did his duty as recommended by the law of the game .thank God there wasn’t an incident that wil warrant for checking of var yesterday. And the referee never took sides like our bvas here .
Ecuador is strong Korea too are a bit strong for we know they don’t like short balls in front of their defence but like to defend in group and also Cross from both side of the field….to the 18 yard .they don’t like dummy balls.flying eagles have good chance against them .. the Ecuador are more of professional players ….let see who get past the other first

    • Supatemmy 11 months ago

I don’t really understand this sport whatever…. All your comments just have fear written everywhere, are you even ready to see Nigeria win? Nawa o

  • Omo9ja 11 months ago

Hmmm. We don’t know what we have Nigerians. We have gold at home but we are still looking for silver out there.

NFF should stop hiring foriegn coaches for Nigeria. This is very embarrassing fah.

I have said this long time ago but many of you people on this platform were so angry but now we can see that we still have so many young talented players in Nigeria and also, we have good local coaches in place.

What is lacking is proper management. Our local coaches deserve some class kę.

Our made in Nigeria team defeated Italy and Argentina under 20. That should tell NFF that if they select the best local coaches and expose the local ones to the modern football, Nigeria football will challenge rapidly soon.

Where are the naysayers now lolz. Edoman and his colleagues? How market?

I believe in our own and I believe they are better than the foriegn coaches that have been working with the Super Eagles before now.

All NFF have to do is to have the rules and regulations in place.

Our own have to be discipline in terms of money and the selection of their teams.

NFF still have a lot to do because we need the best local coaches to handle all the national teams of ours.

I am so proud of coach Bosso. I won’t say much because we haven’t get there yet and I don’t want to go far on this issue.

Lastly, I hope some of my colleagues here have learned their lessons?

You don’t look down on our national teams like that kę lol.

This is why we the patriotic Nigerians have been clamoring for our own to be in charge because nobody can understand us much better than ourselves. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

    • @Omo9ja, please don’t start this now. You cannot compare playing against Javier Mascherano with Playing against a well seasoned coach, this is the problem with Nigerians a coach does well in youth level and you think he can make the jump and coach the senior team. Let me tell you international standard at senior level is miles apart from that of Junior level. If you use sentiments to select a squad you will be found out. a word is enough for the wise let this be known.

Reminder pls don’t even dare campaign for Bosso to take up the coaching duty for Super Eagles he is not there yet.

  • Aha where is the guy i told that i prefer Argentina to the US,i no see u again o.

  • Chima E Samuels 11 months ago

Nigerian keep the praise coming Fredrick Rock Daga diamond oqwuche Taribo, etc if una mouth change I will repost. Hahahaha winning is sweet but we should also learn when we loss most especially against Refs. I’m so excited because a lot of us believed in this win and we were not disappointed. My only prayer is for us to keep improving and play as a team because there a lot of solid teams left in this competition such as USA, Brazil, Italy and Colombia.

  • Am qiute supprise too and happy at the same time, but can’t you guys see that criticising this team has always been working for them, because it seems bosso is a coach that listen.

We can’t deny this fact they got this far by changing tactics each time they meet a strong opponents.

My advice to the team is for them to take the remaning game like as if their life depens on it. Make history for yourself and makes the light of those scouting for better clubs in Europe shine more on you.

Play your way directly into se because we have many outdated, unwilling to improve, lack of fighting spirit and too many average players in se.

Someone should help me to tell those boys that their career is about to take a new dimension if only they can continue with this strength.

  • y ist dat anytime eagle are doing well, sum iritated fans will bring money isue 2 cos distraction.players need national team as a show glass to sale their beans pie
