According to ATP Tour, the clash between the Spaniard and the Frenchman began on Thursday, August 15, but was postponed due to rain with Alcaraz leading Monfils 6-4, 6-6(1/3).
When play resumed, Monfils rallied past Alcaraz to reach the Round of 16, adding a new twist to the match.
Monfils was more consistent in the decider, inflicting just the eighth defeat of the year on Alcaraz, who won the silver medal after losing to Novak Djokovic in the recently concluded Paris 2024 Olympics Men’s Tennis Singles tournament.
The Frenchman saved all four break points he faced and rode the momentum he gained in the second-set tie-break to earn his first Top 3 win since defeating then-World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in March 2022 at Indian Wells.
