2024 Euro Qualifiers: Mbappe Named New France Captain

Paris Saint-Germain forward, Kylian Mbappe has been named the new captain of the France national football team by coach, Didier Deschamps.

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezman was handed the vice captain role.

However Griezman is said to be upset by the decision and is contemplating retiring from the national team as he was expecting the skipper’s role.

 France skipper Hugo Lloris retired from international duty after the conclusion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar leaving the position vacant.

Mbappe burst onto the scene at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia which he won with France along with the young player of the tournament award.

In an interview with TF1, Deschamps highlighted Mbappe’s qualities with regards to the decision.

“Kylian meets all the requirements to have this responsibility,” Deschamps said

“On the field, as in the life of the group, by being a unifying element.”

Thae 24 year old has scored a total of 36 goals in 66 games for France.

He will lead the Les Bleus (the Blues) in their Euro 2024 qualifiers against the Netherlands on Friday, March 24 at Stade de France and Ireland on Monday, March 27 at the Aviva Stadium.
