Former England captain John Terry has expressed deep disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling the Super Eagles’ absence a major miss for the global tournament.

Terry noted that a football tournament of this magnitude loses some of its flair and pedigree without a nation as culturally rich and historically talented as Nigeria in the competition.

Terry Laments Eagles’ World Cup Absence

Speaking during a virtual roundtable session organised by SuperSport, he pointed out that Nigeria consistently brings exciting players, vibrant fans, and a rich football heritage to the world stage.

“Nigeria will be a big miss. This is a World Cup for participants who haven’t had the opportunity to play in the tournament.

“I would have loved to see a top team like Nigeria there because they’ve got some great individuals. They’re a great nation. So, yeah, they fall under that category for me.

“I think they are a big miss because Nigeria probably would have gone further in the competition, but unfortunately, one side’s loss is another’s gain.

“I know Mikel Obi is very upset that they’re not there. It means he can’t do more commentating on the World Cup. That’s why he was upset.”

The 2026 World Cup officially begins with co-hosts Mexico taking on South Africa in Group A on Thursday (today).

Portugal Edge Eagles In Friendly

Meanwhile, Nigeria suffered a 2-1 loss to Portugal in an international friendly as the Europeans rounded off their preparations for the World Cup with a second consecutive victory.

Pedro Neto gave Portugal the lead before Akor Adams restored parity for the Super Eagles.

However, Portugal regained the advantage through substitute Francisco Conceição, who curled a brilliant strike into the far corner to secure the win for the hosts.

The victory ensured Portugal headed into the World Cup on the back of successive wins, while Nigeria was left to reflect on a narrow defeat despite Adams’ equaliser.
