7 Players Who Merit Super Eagles Call-up For Next 2026 W/Cup Qualifiers

The Super Eagles will take on South Africa and Benin Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

After two games in Group C, the Eagles have two points and are in third place behind leaders Rwanda and second-placed South Africa.

The Eagles could be without the likes of William Troost-Ekong, Moses Simon, Tyronne Ebuehi, and Zaidu Sanusi.

In the event of these players missing the doubleheader, Completesports.com‘s JAMES AGBEREBI looks at seven players who should be considered for invitation.

1.Gift Orban (Striker: Olympique Lyon):

Since his first call-up to the Super Eagles in September 2023, in the final qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe, Gift Orban has been overlooked in subsequent invitations.

His early struggles at Olympique Lyon could be blamed for his omission from the AFCON 2023 squad.

But things seem to be looking good for Orban as he scored in back-to-back games for Lyon in April.

One of the goals was in the French Cup tie against Valenciennes, which saw Lyon qualify for the final.

The 21-year-old’s form should be a welcome development for the Eagles as they look forward to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

2.Henry Onyekuru (Left-Winger: Al Fayha):

The Nigerian forward is having a memorable first season at Saudi Arabia club Al Fayha.

In 27 league appearances, Onyekuru has scored 10 goals and provided three assists.

This is the first time he will hit double digits since scoring 14 league goals for Galatasaray in the 2018/19 season.

There is a possibility that he will surpass the feat judging by his impressive form in front of goal so far.

Onyekuru should be a good addition to the team for the qualifiers since he is no stranger to the Eagles, having been part of the AFCON 2019 and 2021 squads.

3.Chidera Ejuke (Left-Winger: Royal Antwerp):

One player who deserves a recall to the Super Eagles ahead of the qualifiers is Chidera Ejuke.

Following a not-too-impressive loan spell at Hertha Berlin, Ejuke has gotten his career back on track thanks to his performance for Royal Antwerp in another loan move.

Ejuke has scored three goals and provided four assists in 24 league matches for Antwerp.

Even though it is looking very likely that Antwerp would not retain their league title, Ejuke played a key role as they reached the Championship playoffs.

With such impressive form, it would be important for the skillful forward to be back in the Eagles to help reignite their qualifying campaign.

4.Maduka Okoye (Goalkeeper: Udinese):

It was not the best of starts to life at Udinese as Maduka Okoye struggled to get minutes.

All that is now in the past following Okoye’s emergence as the first choice for the Serie A club.

His impressive performance in goal earned him the Udinese Player of the Month for February.

Although Stanley Nwabali is now the first choice for the Eagles, Okoye’s return should bring competition among the goalkeepers.

In an interview on Udinese’s website in February, Okoye indicated his interest in returning to the Eagles.

5.Ibrahim Olawoyin (Midfielder: Rizespor):

The former Enugu Rangers and Abia Warriors winger has been magnificent for Rizespor in the Turkish Super Lig this season.

Olawoyin has provided two assists and has scored six goals in 30 league matches.

On Sunday, he provided an assist in Rizespor’s 3-0 home win against Antalyaspor.

Prior to Sunday’s game, he scored a goal in each of his last three games.

His only call-up to the Eagles was against Mexico in a friendly game in the USA in 2021.

The 26-year-old was an unused substitute in the friendly as a Super Eagles squad made up of home-based players lost 4-0.

But with his performance for Rizespor, Olawoyin has what it takes to do well for the Eagles if given the opportunity.

6.Emmanuel Dennis (Striker: Watford):

The forward is beginning to find his scoring boots again at Watford after a disastrous loan spell at Istanbul Basaksehir.

Dennis has scored four goals in 15 league games for Watford, where he is on loan from Nottingham Forest.

Also, he won Watford’s March Goal of the Month award for his strike in the 2-2 home draw against Leeds United and has featured in all their fixtures in April.

Dennis was in the Super Eagles provisional 40-man squad for the AFCON 2023 before he was dropped when the final list was announced.

The former Club Brugge star has unfinished business in the Eagles, and he can contribute immensely to their quest for the 2026 World Cup ticket.

7.Kingsley Ehizibue (Right-Back: Udinese):

The former Netherlands youth defender’s first call-up to the Eagles was in March 2020 under Gernot Rohr for a 2021 AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone.

However, the game was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and he has never been called up again for the Eagles.

But in an interview in April 2023, Ehizibue told Goal that he is still interested in featuring for the Eagles.

“For real, it would be like making a dream come true because I used to watch Nigeria playing in the World Cup, so to wear that jersey was the goal for every kid.

“So, I will do everything possible to make it happen. I’ve played with guys that represent the national team in the Netherlands Germany, and I’m so proud of them.”

Ehizibue can back his push for a call-up due to the fact that he is a regular for Udinese.

So far this season, he has made 17 appearances for the Serie A club and has not missed any of their games this month

Only 2 of the players mentioned can compete with current players (Okoye and Orban). May be Olawoyin or Ehibizue can be considered. The others have had their chances and we know what they fall short compared to the players in their position.
Funny that you chose to include Dennis and ignore Tom Dele Bashiru who has been consistent all season. Tom is a good fit for the midfield, he is a highly technical box to box player with precise shooting skills.
Olise, Adarabioyo, Ogbu, are other set of players that can strengthen the
    team.

Orban,Onyekuru,Dennis haba! you guys are the ones creating unnecessary importance of below than average players. A midfielder provided 2 assists in 30matches! And you are proud to recommend him. Your likes would even recommend npfl players for the Super Eagles sef, is it as ball boy or not,(no offense to local players)but they need to improve now, the best players are quickly snapped up in Europe, we all know that

  • Francis 6 months ago

None of the seven players you mentioned is Super Eagles material, except for Okoye. Your agenda to bring back finished products will not work. Orban and Olawoyin’s time will soon come, not now. They are not ready.Henry, Dennis and Ejuke have no business near the Super Eagles

I mean CSN make headlines on why Madueke, Olise and co are not being pursued this CSN journalists are trying to take our ball Backwards I don’t understand Nigerian MEdia what is all this? .. Watch if Musa does not get called up we will see CSN making it headline I Tire ooo.. Eze Is vaulnarable now and may accept a Call if approached by Nigeria but these daft media outlets will not alert our clueless NFF of this Fact even though it is no secret that we need as much Attacking Midfield Quality as we can get.

CSN YOU PEOPLE NEED TO DO BETTER OR YOU GET SOUND JOURNALIST WHO KNOW BALL!

I am not impressed with this your so-called list of players you believe should be included in the Super Eagles set up.

  • We need not forget Tella is very Much Still eligible for England as he has only 1 Cap for Nigeria which Made me even More Angry With Finidi for Not Handing him minutes in Both games Against Ghana and Mali.. Another reason why We do not need Indigenous Coaches

    • Ugo you’re correct. It’s so sad that the ghost of not playing these guys may hunt finidi for the rest of his life. What an error. I would have preferred him.

Was it juju? Whatever made finidi did that he has really pushed himself out of anything in Nigeria.

    • Esebeluo Wisdom 6 months ago

God bless you bro finidi can’t coach eagle’s he already disappointed me for not featuring tella

  • Agbo max 6 months ago

All the current super eagles players apart from few players, then tell me whose has football skills like Chidera Ejuke? I know some tribal fools doesn’t want better thing

    • Lol Agbo Max Who are you calling Tribal,, Lol are you on Colos or Is Ejuke not Igbo?. FOrget the fact that he grew in North. He is Igbo like me are you okay in the Head OGA!!!..

Again did I mention Ejuke??? or Onyekuru who also happens to be Igbo you people are becoming ridiculous now With your Tribal nonsense so Now I am still a Biggot even though I criticise Igbo Players Who are not up to standard of SE na wa oo

  • Agbo max 6 months ago

Let Tella play for England who cares, Africa football is all about skills or strength, after watching him against Zimbabwe I knew he has nothing to offer, the first day I watched ikechukwu uche, osaze,Aghahowa, Samuel of fenabache, Stanley Nwakili I knew that they will go very far

    • Larry 6 months ago

The same skill and strength that got Lookman a African 11 recognition abi. It takes more than skills and strength.Players that are technically gifted with good decision making and speed will perform at all levels.

      • Nicholas 6 months ago

Oga go and rest Tella and lookman are still kids and play rubbish. Why hasn’t 3 lions look their way if they are that good. Or will you say it’s a race thing now. They both have nothing to offer the eagles. All this second hand products should leave the Eagles abeg, they not even fun to watch

    • Agbo Max you are wrong. Tella will do very well.

  • Agbo max 6 months ago

Is lookman fantastic? Go and rewatch Afcon again,90 percent of his goals was goal keepers error,he wasn’t playing anything just that luck was on his side

    • Respect is reciprocal 6 months ago

People like @agbomax are easy to identify as a bigot and tribalist. Saying most of goals scored by lookman was goal keeper error sounds lunatic. Your Nwabali is only in this team because we have no good keeper, Nwabili who is always punching balls to opponent no matter how little the shot is,we are only lucky because we are not playing against European that follows every shot directed to keepers.
You don’t just want Yorubas to be in the National team , you must be stupid anybody who doesn’t want players to be invited just because they are not fron a particular tribe even when such players play regularly for a good team must be sick.

    • @Agbo Max Are you okay?.. Tell e bros what do you actucally Want or Nigerians like you tell me?.. Who else was able to score those Goals Lookman was scoring in AFCON.. Oh boy this is Ungratefulness at its highest coming from you.. when they Say Naija Nor sabi good thing this is the meaning… Are you serious?.. But Oga Musa should be playing Cheerleader for SE until 500years old Okwa ya?.. No mehn are you people serious.. Nigeria ball is going down the rabbit hole with this mentality What rubbish..

Then you say we dont need Tella he can play for England You and Who oga!!… My Friend You people Fans Like you deserve no joy I swear it. If I was not A Nigerian I would have wished bad on this team becuase of Ungrateful fans like you and our Clueless NFF. What and Abomination of a statement. .

You people are Damn Mediocre mehn!!!

Okoye and orban is a Yes to me other’s is a no go area

  • Hassan Tia 6 months ago

I think Orban is more prolific from thoes players , I add to him Odion Ighalo Al-Wehda player of Saudia Aribia , Ighalo has 14 goals in Saudia league , he has scorde two hatric on two followed matches , so I think he will be an excellent solution for Super Eagles shortage of goals just when they meet Bafana Bafana of South Africa in 1 june 2024 at Godwill Akpabio in Uyo.

  • JULIET 6 months ago

WITH ALL THIS GOOD PLAYERS MENTIONED, ARE WE STILL GOING TO KEEP INVITING A.MUSA ( a leadership, captainship that is not fit), ETEBO(irrelevant players), BALOGUN, OMERUO, IHEANACHO, SADIQ,(benchwarmer players).
