University of Lagos Men’s football team, UNILAG Marines have been knocked out of the ongoing Higher Institutions Football League tournament after losing to Adekunle Ajasin University’s AAUA Luminaries in the second leg of the quarterfinal clash in Akungba on Wednesday.
UNILAG Marines dominated most of parts of the entire match which started late due to heavy downpour and extreme condition of the pitch.
AAUA Luminaries could have gone up in the first half but the ball stopped on the line by stagnant water in the goalkeeper box.
The game ended in a goalless draw after 90minutes of intense action and the match went into an extra time.
However, the extra time was rescheduled to the next day, Thursday as it couldn’t be completed because it was already dark by the the full time whistle was blown.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t long into the extra time when AAUA Luminaries’ team captain, Omotayo Adekimoye bagged the only goal of the second leg encounter for the Akungba outfit from the penalty in the 99th minute.
AAUA Luminaries advanced to the semifinal of the tournament by a lone goal advantage after the first leg ended in a nil-nil draw in Lagos.
In other results from the quarterfinals, Federal University of Technology Minna outfit FUTMINNA Transformers knocked out UNILORIN Warriors on penalty shoot-outs by four goals to three; University of Maiduguri’s UNIMAID Desert Warriors defeated UAM Tillers of University of Agriculture, Makurdi 3goals to nil(3:1 on agg) to qualify for the semifinals while UNIBEN Royals of University of Benin failed to qualify winning at home by one goal to zero against UNN Lions of University of Nigeria, Nsukka as they lost first leg by two goals to nil in Enugu.
AAUA Luminaries will face a tough test from UNN Lions and UNIMAID Desert Warriors will play FUTMINNA Transformers in the semifinals of the tournament.
