Former Nigerian midfielder, Austine ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha has congratulated Austine Eguavoen and the Super Eagles players for their impressive performance at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Recall that the three-time AFCON champions defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0 to maintain their 100% winning record at the tournament.
Goals from Sadiq Umar and William Troost-Ekong was enough to seal another three points for the three-time AFCON champions.
Reacting on the performance of the team, Okocha stated that Eguavoen is blessed with an array of talents capable of reaching the AFCON final.
“I am really impressed with the general performance of the Super Eagles against Guinea-Bissau despite playing the second team.
“This shows that Eguavoen is blessed with an array of talents that are capable of reaching the final if well utilized,” Okocha, a former Super Eagles player told Supersports.

Eguaveon is not blessed with options but rather he is willing to use his options…… Eguaveon has refused to be rigid and stubborn……. Eguaveon simply did exactly the opposite of what his predecessor did and boom the results pumps out……..That shows you that our football was really going south if we hadn’t make this bold decision.
Another wrong take by Jay-Jay. Array of talents don’t play good football and win matches, tactics does. This same Moses Simon was playing amateurish football before but look how good he is. Without Osimhen, Denis e.t.c, Super Eagles have scored six goals in three games, all by different scorers. That’s surely down to tactics rather than ‘array of talents’
Can you listen to yourself??…Jay Jay is not wrong.
What will you achieve if you got all the tactics without the tallents to implement them??…shey you will enter the field as a tactical coach and use your tactics by yourself???….my brother…Jay Jay is right. The coach has the “array of talents” it’s up to him to bring up the best tactics to utilize his player’s talents…thank you.
@SAVE my brother your comment nor carry water, the talents has been there for years, now why didn’t the previous coaches gave Nigerians this kind of happiness and unity that our football has always brought? Why is it that a man that was appointed few weeks before the on going tournament that’s making that happen not even up to a month he took the job? when almost all Nigerians thought the super eagles can never make it in the tournament because of the timing of the corrupt Amaju Pinnick to sacked Gernot Rohr, others were there for three/five years and the super eagles was been killed every second by them, Okocha is just jealous and that’s a fact, why will he even open his mouth to aired out such words of betrayal to his own brother, when Gernot Rohr was there him okocha was muted while he destroyed our super eagles, give respect where it’s due, yes the players contributes immensely to this success stories so far but Augustine Eguavoen has brought out the best in them to make that happens, even with the likes of Victor Osimhen and other players are not there and still you sees such results, man chester United is filled with talents still Watford wope them 4-1 under Olé and other underperformances
Oga Elvis,
When you read comments take some time to properly comprehend them before you begin to type because this your comment no even get head or tail……DID I SAY THE TALENTS HAVE NOT BEEN THERE FOR YEARS?? You are just trying to compare Rohr with Eguavon….that’s not the topic here…
The topic here is whether a manager needs tactics alone to succeed or a manager needs tactics and the talent to succeed….
I don’t care if Jay Jay has a personal beef with Eguavon or not…Let’s call a spade a spade… Jay Jay simply said that “Eguavon is blessed with talented players” simple!! And that’s the Truth…..while JOHN is saying that ” you only need good tactics to win and not talented players” …..I am simply saying that any football manager needs talented players and a good tactical Know how…the tactics alone won’t work….DID YOU SEE US COMPARING ROHR WITH EGUAVON ANYWHERE?????…SO INCASE YOU WISH TO COMMENT AGAIN, THIS IS THE TOPIC: DOES A FOOTBALL MANAGER NEED TACTICS ALONE OR HE NEEDS A COMBINATION OF TACTICS AND TALENTED PLAYERS….THIS IS MY TAKE; talent alone may not work..mind you, tactics doesn’t necessarily mean drafting out a winning plan… Bein able to pick the best set of players to actualize the plan is also a good characteristics of a good tactical manager….Rhor was also blessed with the same set of talented players just as Eguavon…the difference is in their tactical approach to utilize the players they have at their disposal. Nigeria Is playing fantastic because they have the talent and they also have a good tactical manager(Eguavon) who knows how to put their talents into good use to get results…Ask yourself…why do great tactical managers like Pep still have preferences on the players to use for a particular game…is it not because of the player’s unique talents???…all am saying is… talent alone won’t work u may be lucky here and there but you will eventually come to realize that you need both a tactical Manager and the talented players to get the best results..
CS, “Jay-Lay” kwa?
Is Okocha related to Omah Lay?
Lol 😛
Abeg óò, once they correct the error, y’all can just ignore the comment above. 😀
@John-1 ; I stand by you.
@Akp ; Sport on
Thanks, Oga Jay-Jay. But success is about taking calculated risks and being adventurous; not being rigid in one’s attitude, which typified Rohr’s era.
I disagree on this jay jay cus option has been there for over five good years but the changes everyone is seeing now at on going afcon is as results of that coach cerezo know how to use the options and knows what he is doing cus for a very long time moses simon, and the rest players are playing good football.
Technicalities without ideologies
Is simply out of point what is the need of having a good car without a good driver
I rest my case
Eguavoen thank you sir
