AFCON 2021: ‘Why Super Eagles Players Are More Motivated Now’  –Eguavoen

Austin Eguavoen has explained why Super Eagles players are more motivated now since he took charge.

Eguavoen led the Eagles to a winning start at this year’s AFCON following their 1-0 win against Egypt.

The team put in a determined performance against the seven-time African champions who paraded Mohamed Salah.

And speaking on what is responsible for the renewed motivation in the team, Eguavoen told NFF TV:”I just made them feel at home. I told them to see me as their father, their brother and their friend.

“And even the backroom staff I don’t see them as assistant coaches, I see them as colleagues. So I told everybody feel very free but don’t overstep your bounds, we respect one another.

“So that atmosphere, that oneness, that love and confidence among ourselves is really helping matters.”

On the new formation the team plays now:”Still the same personels but I think what we did was we brought the boys together and ask them the formation they are comfortable with because we wanted to be flexible and they let me know the formation they’ve been using for the past few years so I took it and went to work on it and improve them on that formation.”

And on how far the Eagles can go at the ongoing AFCON, Eguavoen said:”That’s a difficult question to answer like I said we want to take every game like a Cup final so we will see where we end.”

  • One thing I like about this Eguavon is that he show humbleness and try to continue with the last coach project by carrying every members of his crew along and maybe that is why the players gave everything unlike the last few matches. He didn’t discredit the former coach work like some disgraceful fans are doing but rather input his own by making some little changes. Wish him and the boys all the best my support for eagles always whether good or bad but won’t be part of wailing wailers…

Eguavoen is a respectable figure in the Nigeria football spectrum and fraternity. he holds the record of the only Nigerian coach to qualify from a group stage with 100% record i.e amassing all maximum nine points on offer in the 2006 Nations cup. He later took over the reins as the interim manager for the ongoing world cup qualifiers after the last coach was fired owing to poor results. He boasted a record of scoring plenty goals and that surely will continue here in Cameroon with the plethora of fantastic players we have on parade.

Thank Hod for the Journey so far, one thing am sure of is that if the coach continues this way of relating and reasoning with all then the sky is not even the Super Eagles limits by Gods grace.

Eguavoen no sabi. Na talk talk he dey do.

  • He asked the boys what formation they were most comfortable with. Awesome way to include the players’ input and get them to buy into his system. Nice work coach!!!

    Folks,

I love this dude’s response to Oliseh’s tweet. Personally, I think it was Oliseh who laid that foundation of failure of our inability to qualify for AFCON 2017. He fought with everybody and created a toxic environment which Sia1 could not remedy in that decisive home and away tie against Egypt.

No go suffer hypertension on top Rohr matter young men @TAYO and LANRE. Even if na una be him PA, you have to move on. You don see where a new coach openly discredits another?. Thing is your thinking faculty is too low. Thank God say you TAYO yaself admitted that the players played well for EGUAVOEN than the last fee games of ROHR. So tell me, why didnt they play well for ROHR since you and your pathetic band of wailing wailers (see who is calling who WAILERS. is it the winning team which ROHR MUST GO fans belong that are wailing or you guys who are stilll suffering the painful and crushing hangover? Lmao). When last did your messaiah ROHR play 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1? You should bury una shameless and pathetic heads in sand of mediocrity. A coach who plays 3-5-2 against ordinary CAPE VERDE, CAR, LIBERIA etc and still lost at home and draw at home against teams ranked over 70 players below SE???? Common, this is 2022, go and have sense for once you little kids. RPHR who held an interview before the match and tell the whole world how EGYPT will defeat NIGERIA because SE no get players fpr REAL MADRID? When EGYPT won their record back to back to back AFCONS how many BARCELONA and LIVERPOOL players them get? May be you guys still dey wear diapers when SE won 1994 AFCON with majority playing in BELGIUM; Rufai, Oliseh, Amokachie, Eguavoen, Uche Okafor.

RHOR is a tactically deficient coach. Period! Get it into your little heads and support EGUAVOEN or continue to cry like an igbere that dem collected his mat. Hahahahahahahahhahaahaaa. We say bye bye to boring football. Bye bye to benching AINA and ZAIDU. Bye bye to starting MUSA at the expense of fitter and better players. Bye bye to dour, dull, ponderous and listless football. Bye bye to lack of life on our touchline. Bye bye to late substitutions. Bye bye to poor reading of games. I can go on and on.

My brother! I no fit laugh o
Rohr fit start musa against Egypt, that man ehn

If Rohr was in charge of this match against Egypt and we were winning till around 70 mins, that team no dey attack again o, na so so defend dem go dey do , absorbing unnecessary pressure which would most likely yield a goal for the opponent… He lacks in-game management!it cost us against Argentina, Algeria

  • I guess you didn’t read the part were he said he took it, worked on it and improved it uhh!
    He improved on it.

Everyone could see that aribo was playing in the same position he played under rohr but his performance was not the same. His game greatly changed in the match against Egypt. That is one of the improvement coach eguavoen brought to the team.

Don’t mind those Rohr association, they could even said Rohr tutored the players against Egypt.

He said “he sought GERNOT ROHR,s players….” WTF is that?? It could have been anyone’s players brother, person take 6 years coach , e for no get regulars. You people will say anything to give credit to that man, it’s never like I’m discrediting what he was able to achieve in his owm capacity either but alteast, if you’re going to still sing songs about Rohr, be sure to compose that song with convincing lyrics not all these feeble basis.

Would Rohr have benched Iwobi? Una go see when them go play iwobi next like that, him ball go different. These are little things that makes big differences. Put trust in all your players, make them competitive

Apart from Rohr tactical ineptitude, his mentality was another major setback for him.

Rohr could have beaten Brazil, who said that isn’t possible? But he knew deep down in his mind that getting a draw or even losing 1-0 against Brazil would feel like a win to him.

Make una leave matter abeg, he’s gone for good

He showed his good ways of doing business. He is matured and experienced. I won’t be surprised when he is successful this time. By the time he adds Osimhen, Amoo and possibly Ighalo to the team for World Cup playoff, he will have Nigeria do well in the FIFA games later this year.

  • Jacob 2 years ago

@edoman. He will do just that if corrupt PINICK AND nff send that Mourhino coach back to where he came from.
#Saynotoforeigncoaches# conduit pipe to siphon dollars from Nigeria by Amaju Pinnick and corrupt NFF

It is too early to make this assertions Dear Bro. But fact is if this team continues to perform like they did against Egypt and go all the way to win this trophy, I can’t see Picnick’s NFF succeeding in displacing Eguavoen because they will be backlash from the supporters.
I watched the game against Egypt and I have a few observations
1.our wingers(Chukwueze and Simon) needs to perfect their pull in from the wings..look at how Burkina Faso scored, through that beautifully delivered cross in from the wing.
      2. Chukwueze must improve and be more assertive on the field of play, no doubt he has those bundles of skill, but he definitely needs to put in more.
3.We were wasteful in front of the goal, this needs to be addressed.
      4. Good defensive display but we need to improve on it.

@Mutairu Yusuf it seems to be lost on you the power of the press……. because that interview, that you referred to had been granted long ago, but to paint the gentleman black, extracts of it were brought on for some Nigerians who are still bitter about the unmerited sack of the coach…… to also have reason to hate him nd cross carpet. But we have moved on…… we are Nigerians nd are also happy when the super eagles win……. we know that GERNOT ROHR can’t be our national team’s coach FOREVER, even if he had won us both the 2019 WORLD nd AFCON CUPS…… but let us not blink the fact that GERNOT ROHR’s impact on our football will for many years to come be relevant……he met a team in shambles, that could not QUALIFY for TWO consecutive AFCONS nd was rejected by many other coaches but he ACCEPTED to have a go by assembling a team that consisted of remarkably YOUNG TALENTS nd was never shy to call them so as he IMMEDIATELY, THEREAFTER took them to LAST AFCON nd WORLD cup winning BRONZE at the former……he is worth to be celebrated!

Let’s wait and see if Eguavoen will sustain his current performance when the NFF owes him 7 month’s salary.

  • In the end, no matter how one looks at it. Rhor’s last scorecard was a Bronze at AFCON. Till Eguavoen surpasses That, then we can say he is better than Rhor.

Till then, no one should say Eguavoen is better than him. I can even point out some deficinces of Super Eagles from our first match that you wouldn’t see in Rhor’s team.

    Here is a list
    1. Used too many long balls from the defence to the attack that most times didn’t end up in a positive result.

    2. Failure of each player to recognize opportunities for passes to sustain attacking pressure on their opponent.

    3. Rather than run and shoot at the goal post, there were many incidences that a pass would have resulted to a goal in the Egyptian post for example Ejuke’s run to the opponents post with 3 other Super Eagles players.

    4. An absolute absence of using our midfielders to break down the opponents, because of the use of long balls.

    5. A lack of patience in our playing pattern, everything seems to be in a hurry. Watch CIV or Cameroon’ s 2nd game for understanding.

These are the areas where a Rhor’s team did better than Eguavoen’s team So far. Let’s hope that there is an improvement by Saturday
