AFCON 2023: Ivory Coast Oust Senegal On Penalties, Zoom Into Quarter Finals

Ivory Coast have qualified to the quarter finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating holders, Senegal 5-4 on penalties on Monday.

It was a pulsating 90 minutes that saw Senegal took the lead in the 4th minute through Habib Diallo before Franck Kessie leveled parity in the 86th minute, to send the game into extra time.

However, both teams failed to score a goal in the extra time, to send the game into penalty shootouts.

Kessie, who had scored from the spot four minutes from the end of normal time, converted the winning penalty to seal an extraordinary victory for the hosts, who redeemed themselves after a humiliating group-stage display which culminated in two defeats.

The host will meet the winner between Mali and Burkina Faso in the quarter finals of the tournament.

  • congratulations to Ivory coast…many people predicted the outcome… i guess the yellow card to sadio in the first half slow down their games…but, kudos to Ivory coast for fighting like a womded lions.

Yes, Ivory Coast was the better team. They even deserved to win within regulation time of 90 min. Congratulations to Ivory Coast. It is not over until it is over.

@Tod_ the best team won, apparently,Mane deserved to be sent off for such horrendous challenge!

      • Dr. Drey 3 months ago

I still don’t understand how mane escaped a sending off, although it was good he wasn’t sent off in the end, so it won’t undermine CIV’s brave efforts to send the Lions back home.

24 team AFCON no be beans…it will humble you. Ask Algeria…ask Senegal….ask the rest of the big boys. Even Nigeria has resorted to bus parking these days just to eke out results…..a whole braggadocious Nigeria….LMAOoo.

        • @ Dr. i shared your view sir…i thought its going to be straight red for him..and the story woukd have been its because sadio was red carded reason ivory coast won.. Òlòrun dè ti gbogo fòlè ivory coast lol

You can see the serious inconsistencies in officiating at the AFCON. Iwobi”s tackle wasn’t this bad in 2021 he got sent off. Ot is well o.

But come to think of it. Teams with maximum 9 points ij the first round often get booted out in the second round. Am I missing something? Is it that winning all the matches in the group stage cones with certain self-awareness that its impossible to lose against a third placed team? Nigeria in 2021. Now Senegal.

      I’m still thinking though.

The refereeing last night was the worst I’ve seen in the last 10 AFCONs. It was painful to the eyes. The last time I saw such a stinker was the Tunisia vs Nigeria 2004 AFCON semifinal match in Rades.

By the way, 3rd placed teams are like people who have cheated death and now percieve themselves as having a 2nd chance at life…..they want to live it better. They have been written off, a fallen man who fears no fall anymore and hence have nothing to lose again should they suffer another loss.

Teams with 9 points are like that exhuberant youth who hit gold too early in life…..overtly confident, carefree, and most times too trusting in their own abilities….it’s usually something small that brings them back down to earth.

        In life….tables turn very quickly.

  • those countries that top the groups are gradually going home…lol

Senegal and Equatorial Guinea were the two best teams in the group stage. But now they are out.

All teams are beatable in this AFCON.

Our SE can take it if they have enough self belief and determination.

    Over to you boys.

This is a good result – Senegal were starting to get too big for their boots, plus it’s equitable for Cote D Ivoire to progress to the next stage as they are the landlords for the games and a fine landlord they have been so far – this is just reward and a fair and equitable outcome.
My own personal choice now is for us and them to progress and meet to duke it out again for the final, with the ultimate declaration being (In boxing parlance) “And The New” African Champions are the Super Eagles Of Nigeriaaaaa! Oya let’s goo!

    Well, well, well!
    Senegal is out. Incredible.
But we now have a CIV that has the Ivorian people firmly behind them. This win has made them the people’s darling once again.

  • Interesting. Some days ago i did a long post about Senegal on this forum. I had to do that to show that they are beatable. Also to show that player for player and with performance in Europe in the past two seasons they are not better than the super eagles.

I also mentioned that playing together as a team and the influence of mane has been if tremendous use to them.

I also mentioned that they have not really done anything great at the world cup with this team. This even cuts across all their national teams.

I also said they were lucky at the last afcon. They should have been sent home from the group stage

I had to do to that to counter the fear people were having about them.

While not saying they are not a good team but it’s so sure that they are beatable.

    Cote D’Ivoire did it today.

Added to this, cisse can’t take them beyond Africa. That set of Senegalese players need to a sound coach to make them do beyond Africa. This was evident at the last world cup.

The coast is getting clearer for the super eagles. We just have to win three matches. The boys should know that these are going to be one of the matches they will ever play in Nigeria shirt.

Against Angola I want to see how the weak central defence of Angola will handle Oshimen.

I believe this loss of Senegalese is a plus to the eagles.

    1. It will make believe it’s even more possible with the defending champion gone.

    2. It will also make them know that anyone can be booted out of this competition.

We are winning by 3 goals to nothing. Another clean sheet for eagles

With another great performance in this match for Oshimen he will become the most influential player in this afcon.

      Nice points.
But be careful! Someone will soon accuse you of trying to claim credit for CIV’s win.
Maybe they won because they read your post. HAHAHAHAHA!

    • I think this should be a lesson for the Senegalese. It is not over until it is over. They were becoming too pompous and loquacious especially Diouf. They carry on as if they only need to show up and they will win.

Mane is not the same player as he was before his move to Saudi, A careful analysis of the Senegalese team shows they are beatable.Other teams probably have given them too much respect and space to play.

Not entirely suprised by CIV victory. In 7 previous meetings with Senegal in previous AFCON, CIV have won 6 with one draw.Eveey team do have their nemesis.

This is the Africa Cup of Nations. SuperEagles all the way but one game at a time. We focus on Angola.

    Senegal Out
    Algeria Out
    Egypt Out
    Cameroon Out
    Ghana Out
    Tunisia Out
    Zambia
And latter today, one of Mali or Burkina Faso and one of Morroco and South Africa will be Out.

SE, it is now or never for you. There wouldn’t be another AFCON with such a smooth knockout phase ríde to the trophy
