AFCON 2023: Lookman Wins Man-Of-The-Match Award In Super Eagles’ Win Over Cameroon

Super Eagles winger, Ademola Lookman has been named the Man-Of-The-Match award in the team’s 2-0 win over Cameroon in the round of 16 of the Saturday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Lookman, who was at his best mettle, scored the opening goal for Nigeria in the 36th minute after Napoli goal poacher Victor Osimhen set a perfect assist to put Nigeria ahead.

The Nigerian international sealed the win in the 90th minute after one of the game’s best moves, volleying home Calvin Bassey’s cutback to spark huge celebrations among the three-time champions.

The Super Eagles will meet Angola, who impressed in a 3-0 win over Namibia earlier, in the last eight on Friday, also in the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium.

Should Lookman replicate this kind of performance further in the tournament, Nigeria will feel they have every chance of winning a fourth AFCON title.

  • Oshimen is indeed world class. He is a gift to Nigeria. He created that first goal out of nothing!!! World class. He troubled that defense of Cameron all through.

Ademola is just showing what he is capable of doing.

With this performance today it will be tough to beat this team.

I said here that pesero has found a secret with this formation. That’s the strength of team according to the players he has with him.

Three clean sheets. Creation of many scoring chances. With more luck they will score more goals.

    I hope nwabsli recovers well.

Onyeka too surprised me. I can’t believe he can give what he is giving.

It would have been very terrible for opposition if ndidi and Boniface are in this team. Even in their absence, we still have this. I pray God will crown their efforts in this tournament with the trophy.

Aina is a gem. Cameron was just not a match today.

Well deserved MOTM for Lookman. He’s a real baller.

Osimhen played his heart out today, always harassing Cameroon defenders.

I hope Stanley Nwabali returns for Quaterfinal. He oozes confidence. Also love his defensive organisation and command. A lot of folks don’t understand that a good goalkeeper enhances the performances of his back-4. That’s why a keeper can make fewer saves, concede fewer goals and win best goalkeeper.

Frank Onyeka may not be too technically gifted but he’s a bundle of energy. He does the dirty job with utmost precision.

Ekong played like a trojan. Nuffield said!

Anyone saw that rabona from Ola Aina? Super talent that guy.

You never know what to get from Iwobi’s style player. See as him misuse a good opportunity with ‘Atiliọgwụ’ dance!

By the way, did anyone notice that Calven Bassey’s one cross resulted in a goal?. Na Centerback o. But El-Sanusi Zaidu will cross twenty balls into the bush. The guy eh

Paul Onuachu capped everything with those time-wasting-stepovers lol

Nwabali get well soon for the next match. What a GK! He is the discovery of the tournament. Great distribution and control of the backline and his box. Rush out when he needs to , calm, calculated, and classy!!

Aina highly skillful, tactically gifted. This guy can play defence, midfield, and attack. Carries threat from everywhere on the pitch.nt so far. Forget Hakimi, Aina is the real deal !!

Ajayi; strong, hard tackling, and calm on the ball (reminds me of Taribo and Uche Okechukwu)

Ekong growing to become the libero, strong in the air and risk manager

Bassey tough, strong, agile, and robust (Left footed Taribo)
Sanusi: tactical defender and good on one on one marking, just needs to step up his passing and crosses

Onyeka : the midfield generalissimo, very strong tackling and great recovery

Iwobi: beginning to exert his presence as the team progresses. Good passing skill. The best passer of the ball

Moses: workaholic and enterprising display. The invisible element that bslances the formation.

Lookman: the best partner for Osi9, electrifying and direct attacking threat

Osi9; the greatest gift to Nigerian soccer after Yekini. Always ready to play his heart out.

Omeruo: the most consistent Super Eagle player in the last decade. He is a leader.

  • If Eagles have 2 more Osimhen characters, we can repeat Egyptian feats of a decade ago. At a point, I feared he’d be injured badly.

Good rating @Larry. Now I don’t know if late substitution by peserio is good move. Players were running on empty by the 80th minute.

I now believe what some people here said: Eagles try to rise up when opposition looks formidable.

Win both halves entered today. Pleasurably risky but I trusted my gut feeling. It surprisingly worked.

I for no put Barca oh.

@Sly, we can’t be blame him. Sometimes coaches just wanna have the players they trust on the pitch at all times.

  • WE NIGERIANS ARE PLAYING THREE COUNTRIES CAMERON, GHANA & SOUTH AFRICA

  • Lookman has been one of the breakout stars of the tournament – he’s been outstanding with the ball at his feet, producing eye catching moments with his ball movements and his techniques. His freekick sent jitters to the spine of the Lions when he stepped up to the deadball, which to their relief sailed over the crossbar. The set pieces combined the elements of technique, force and power. I’m sure next time, he’ll nail with more precision. Truly, AFCON trophy is on his mind with his well deserved goals.

    Props to you, Ademola Lookman.
