Former Super Eagles coach, Adeboye Onigbinde has congratulated Victor Osimhen for winning the 2023 African Footballer of the Year Award.
Recall that Osimhen defeated the like of Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah to win the award on Monday in Morocco.
Monday’s award capped off a sterling year for the Super Eagles forward whose historic feat in the imperial Moroccan city of Marakesh ended Nigeria’s 24-year-old wait for Africa’s top individual prize. Legendary Kanu Nwankwo was the last Nigerian to win the award and that was in 1999.
In a chat with Completesports.com, Onigbinde stated that Osimhen deserved the crown after his impressive display for Napoli last season.
“I congratulate Osimhen and Nigeria. It was a well deserved award for him.
“It confirms what I say that Nigeria is blessed with an array of talents. The only problem is that we are not doing enough to identify and develop them.
On whether his award victory will spur him to help the Super Eagles win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Onigbinde said that it’s personal decision for the player.
“That is a personal decision for Osimhen to take. We have take a lot things into consideration.”
