Nigeria goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been named player of the month for September/October in the South African top flight – the Absa Premiership, reports Completesports.com.
Akpeyi has been in fantastic form for Kaizer Chiefs this season and has established himself as the Amakhosi’s first choice goalie following injury to Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune.
The 33-year-old made his 9th league appearance on Wednesday night in Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 away win against Stellenbosch FC at the Cape Town Stadium.
The Nigeria international who was surprise to win the individual award thanked the Kaizer Chiefs’ technical team for their support.
“It is (award) a big surprise to me, but it also shows the importance of putting effort forward in whatever you do. I give credit to the technical team who have been patient with me,” Akpeyi told a news conference on Thursday.
“I’m settling in, I’m taking each game as it comes. Khune is a good keeper, I’m just grateful for the opportunity from the coach. It’s a healthy competition in that department [goalkeeping]. I’m just happy to be improving all the time.”
Kaizer Chiefs manager, Ernst Middendorp was also named coach of the month for September/October.

Go and wash your head in Ogwuashi river, there are definitely some spirits that torment you once you put on any jersey that had NFF logo on it.
Abeggy
…….that has……..damit!!!
Is this a case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? Two different personalities seem to reside in comrade Akpeyi. He has a good side, but then there is a dark, grossly incompetent side that lurks beneath….
AKPA-BASKET shows up in the Nigeria jersey, bringing calamity, worry and fear, raising the BP of fans to dangerous levels. On the other hand, AKPA-MAGNET takes over when he plays for his club, posting man-of-the-match performances. The encouraging thing for us is that in the last 2 games against Benin and Lesotho, we saw a lot more of AKPA-MAGNET. Let’s hope that trend continues!
This Akpeyi guy seem to have a very very strong media backup. I think he has some Kingpins on his side.
This guy is the worse keeper I have ever seen, yet he has so much of media headlines not on his howlers but that he is dude at goal! Omg
How we have reduced ourselves and standards from professionalism to mediocrity!
Sir even in his club watch him he is a sham at the post.
Lacks confidence, reflex, goalkeeping skill and all attributes that should make for a goal keeper who knows his onion.
What keeps taking me aback and stunned is how he gets media support and high heavens talks!
Na whao!
Hehehehehe…so when he makes headlines (for good reasons as the case is now) the media should not report it…???
Akpeyi must be so rich he has lots of cash to throw at top media houses like CSN, Goal.com, Kick-off, Africafootball and the rest of them. He must really be a ‘sham at the post’ for him (a goal keeper) to be PLAYER OF THE MONTH in the ENTIRE LEAGUE. Lolz
These are the same people who claim stability is not a form of improvement….LMAO. Pls read @Josejo’s comment below and dont be shy to apologize to yourself. Lolz
while we acknowledge the mistakes he has made in the past, we should also celebrate his current rich vein of form. anyone who has watched his club games in the past 2 months would have nothing but positive words to give. That’s how good he has been
ANALISING APKEYI’S PERFORMANCES VIS-A-VIS NIGERIANS UNREASONABLENESS.
Goal keepers are the most vulnerable and exposed element on the football field in the sense that where an error is made leading to a goal the keeper is blamed even though in real sense of it the defender or dm should be blamed. As it has always been said a keeper is as good as his defence or even the team, but we do not agree with that cliche.
I have asked a million times on this platform for anyone with guts to tell me one Nigeria match where Akpeyi’s error led to a goal or where his sloppiness led to a goal aside the Friendly between SE and Argentina which to me was a stupid error, and I have still not found one.But I can tell you a thousand and one mistakes made by Coitour of Madrid or Man United keeper that led to a goal.
It is not a case of APKEYI’S confidence, but overzealousness of Nigerians coupled with shallow mindedness towards anything we do not tend to like.Otherwise why should a man be judged with the way his eyes are, may be we will have to put Tinubu to sword then.Check your records Enyeama has made more errors leading to goals again club and country than Akpeyi.@ Iszy i bet you have never watched Akpeyi at Kaiser Chief or his previous club,if you do and yet you still have that kind of damning report then my conclusion against you is either you are wicked with tendency to destroy Apkeyis person or you are simply perverting the truth. So a keeper who according to you is that bad will conjor the entirety of the South African press that is full of hatred for anything Nigerian to convince the PSL to award him the best player even in the mix of outfield players?oga check your analysis.
I took my time to watch all Akpeyi’s matches for us including the South African match at Uyo and my conclusion is that he’s simply one of the best we have.My analysis is best on some of the things I saw which also played out against Benin and Lesotho in resent matches.Aside from Enyeama and Ike, Akpeyi’s reflex is the best,no one comes near him in terms of ball distribution both with his legs and hands, against Lesotho and Benin I watched how he initiated attack with his quick throw from the rear to connect the attack. In the area of arrangement of his defence line he has to improve.Aeria duel he’s not bad at all.All of this and many more are the things that endear me to him and not the looks on his face because even his players are too busy to keep staring in his face.
When real Madrid condemned the performance of very poor Coutoir his nation came to his defence. But I tell u if Coutoir were to be black he will be no where to day.I come in defence of Akpeyi today as someone who has truly followed him and have seen how good he is as to be awarded the best player in PSL as a keeper is not a mean feat.
Congrats to No.1 Super Eagles goalie-Daniel Akpeyi.
More laurels Bro.
