Alexander-Arnold Not A Quality Defender –Eriksson

Former England coach Sven Goran Eriksson says he has never been convinced with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defending ability.

In an interview with Boyle Sports, Erikssson stated that he will prefer to use Manchester City’s Kyle Walker ahead of him.

“I remember during my time we had Gary Neville, or on the other side Ashley Cole, if they were not available it created a problem. But here if one or two right-backs are not available, you can easily put one in.

“I guess I’d start with Alexander-Arnold or Kyle Walker, one of them.

“Trent is a fantastic attacker of course, great crosses and a great right foot, extremely good right foot.

“As a defender he’s not the best in the world but of course if you play for Liverpool, attacking, attacking, they maybe don’t need that.

“I think it very much depends who the opponent is. For example Brazil, where you will probably not have the ball as much, maybe then you put in one who is stronger defensively.”

Style of play

Alexander-Arnold is widely regarded as one of the best attacking full-backs in world football as a result of his proficiency at occupying attacking spaces on the pitch and creating goalscoring opportunities for his teammates. During the early years of his career, he emerged as one of the Premier League’s most creative players due to his role in assisting goals from early crosses and set-piece deliveries.

He possesses an impressive passing range, which is attributed to his development as a midfielder during his time in Liverpool’s youth academy, and has been one of Liverpool’s designated set-piece specialists for deadball situations since the 2017–18 campaign. His set-piece routine, which involves three parallel steps backwards and one to the right, has been likened to that of former rugby union fly-half Jonny Wilkinson.
