Ameobi Set For New Magpies Role

Former Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi looks set to take a newly-created role of ‘loan arranger’ at St James’ Park, reports claim. The 37-year-old spent 14 seasons with the Magpies, scoring 79 goals from 397 appearances in all competitions, but left to join Turkish outfit Gazisehir Gaziantep in 2014.

The Nigeria international also spent time at Crystal Palace, Bolton Wanderers and Fleetwood Town before ending up at Notts County in 2017 for an 18-month stint. He left the East Midlands at the end of the 2017-18 campaign and has not played since and, although yet to officially hang up his boots, it seems unlikely that the veteran will play professionally again.

Ameobi has been involved with coaching at the Newcastle Academy in recent seasons and, according to the club’s official website, will now be employed to ensure that the youngsters receive the best advice about loan moves. There have been some recent poor choices of loan spells and it will be the former England Under-21 star’s job to make sure that things are put right in that department.
