Bartels Makes Emotional Werder Return

Fin Bartels made an emotional return for Werder Bremen on Friday night after 15 months on the sidelines with a Achilles injury.

The 32-year-old midfielder came on as an 84th-minute substitute for Milot Rashica during Werder’s 4-2 victory over Stuttgart in the Bundesliga – his first competitive appearance since December 2017.

The former Germany Under-21 international admits the nerves were jangling as he entered the pitch and he has praised the club’s supporters for giving him a rousing reception. “I was so nervous that I totally messed up my first touch,” Bartels told the Werder website. “I have received a lot of support and encouragement.

I can only thank the fans. That was huge.” Bartels’ return capped a good night for Werder after a brace from Rashica and further strikes from Max Kruse and Martin Harnik helped them extend their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to eight matches. Werder’s last defeat in the division came away at RB Leipzig before Christmas.
