Bassey Thrilled With Champions League Debut In Ajax Vs Rangers

Super Eagles and Ajax defender, Calvin Bassey is thrilled after making his UEFA Champions League debut, incidentally, against his former Scottish Premiership club, Rangers, Completesports.com reports.

Ajax defeated the Gers 4-0 on Wednesday, September 7 at the Amsterdam Arena.

Goals from Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis, Mohammed Qudus, and Steven Bergwijn gave the Eredivisie Champions the win.

With the win, Ajax sit atop the 2022/2023 Champions League Group A on three points after matchday-1. Napoli who mauled Liverpool 4-1 are second also on three points. The Reds and the Gers, both without any point, are third and fourth respectively.

In a video interview posted on the Ajax YouTube Channel, Bassey revealed that playing in the Champions League was his dream.

“It’s been one of my dreams to participate in the Champions League,” Bassey said.

“To be able to do that was unreal, bittersweet because it was against my old team. On a personal note, it was just an amazing achievement for me.

“It was amazing because last season we spoke about the Champions League. The Champions League was sort of like the next step.”

Bassey added concerning the encounter against former teammates: “It was nice to see both of us even though I’d moved on. We were both in the Champions League.

“It was nice to see familiar faces but on that pitch, it’s go time. When I closed my eyes, it was like I was a kid watching myself

“Then to actually open my eyes and be the one there, it’s like surreal, it’s a surreal moment for me.”

Bassey took to his Twitter and Instagram platforms on Thursday to also celebrate his winning debut on the Champions League.

“God is Great. Unbelievable feeling to make my @championsleague debut. The boys were amazing. Was so good to see so many familiar faces last night… gonna be special to be back at lbrox in November. We keep working,” his Twitter and Instagram post reads.

Bassey has recorded one assist from five games in all competitions for Ajax so far this season.

Ajax’s next Champions League game is against Liverpool on Wednesday, September 13.
