Boniface Eager To Return  –Leverkusen Coach, Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has said Victor Boniface is itching to get back on the pitch.

Boniface has been out since January with a groin injury.

The striker picked up the injury in the Super Eagles camp ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

He could make his long awaited return on Wednesday in the German Cup semi-finals against Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Speaking in his presser on Tuesday, Alonso said:”We have no injured players. Everyone could be available for the squad,” Alonso said.

“Boniface could play a part of the game. He trained hard and came through it with a strong mentality. He can’t wait to be back on the pitch.”

Boniface has scored 10 goals, made seven assists in 16 league appearances for Leverkusen this season.

The 23-year-old has scored 16 goals in 23 games in all competitions this campaign.

The 2010 World Cup winner said his side will come up against a good opponent in Wednesday’s semi-final.

“We are expecting a good opponent tomorrow. They are in really good form. It’s a semi final for both teams and and a huge chance to play in the final. We will give our all to end up at the Final in Berlin.”

The Spaniard added:”It would be great to get to a final. The Pokal in Berlin is special. You can feel the excitement from the fans. They have joy to come to the stadium and they want to go to Berlin.

“Yes, we are the only Bundesliga team so that is easy to be classed as favorites. That doesn’t mean anything though. We want to deserve our chance to play in the final.”

Alonso is on the verge of leading Leverkusen to a first-ever Bundesliga title.
