Breaking Down The Hysteria Around Ben White

Breaking Down The Hysteria Around Ben White

Ben White is in for a life-changing summer now that he finds himself in the midst of a bidding war between some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs. Indeed, it does appear that life on England’s south coast is coming to an end for White but there is still a sense that Premier League fans from around the world don’t quite know what the 23-year-old offers.

In fact, there will even be some who are unaware that White was with the English squad as they were bidding to win the Euros. In fact, anyone who had bet on England vs Denmark in their semi-final would have also seen that Gareth Southgate’s men were the overwhelming favorites. Ben White was a big part of that, given that defence was such a large part of the campaign for England, even if he didn’t have the individual influence he would have liked.

Naturally, this is down to the fact that the 23-year-old hasn’t played a starring role but it’s also emblematic of White’s character, with the defender happy to keep a low profile and let his performances do the talking.

This selflessness and tendency to avoid the limelight makes him a player that fits into any team seamlessly. White was, of course, part of the Leeds United side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2020 after playing every game of the season for the West Yorkshire club, and it was his effortless integration into the side that propelled Leeds up the table from the first whistle of their campaign.

Over the following 12 months, the on-loan defender would catch the attention of the country’s biggest clubs and it’s easy to see why he did, given his range of passing and composure on the ball. Additionally, White always looked a step ahead of the opposition’s strikers and would be in the right place at the right time. One soon realizes that his ability to be a play ahead of the danger is no coincidence but rather the intuition of a player that is destined for the very top. Basically, it’s impossible to coach a sixth sense into players but, when a player is found to have it, an inevitable fight for their signature commences.

In this instance, White would return to Brighton after learning his trade at Leeds and even sign a new contract with the Seasiders. However, no one at the Amex Stadium believed that White was realistically committing his long-term future to the club and instead it was done to ensure that Brighton received a huge fee for the player when his inevitable departure did take place.

That day seems to have drawn ever nearer with the biggest clubs in England’s top-flight set to offer the defender a way out of Brighton and into the big time. It is now up to White to decide where he wants to go.

Whether that happens this season or next remains to be seen but the undeniable truth is that this is a player that will soon be spoken about in the same breath as the likes of Rio Ferdinand or John Terry. Indeed, Ben White is destined to take his place among defending royalty sooner rather than later.
