South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has expressed disappointment after their 1-0 round of 32 loss to Canada at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
With both sides making their first-ever appearance in the knockout phase, the game appeared to be heading for extra time before Eustaquio broke South African hearts with a clinical hit from just outside the area.

Reacting after the game, Broos admitted that Bafana Bafana lacked the power, speed, and 1-v-1 quality of modern football but commended the historic campaign.
Despite the heartbreaking stoppage-time defeat, Broos reflected highly on the tournament, stating fans could be satisfied that South Africa made it to the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in 24 years.
“First of all, it’s clever to make decisions when you are disappointed. On the other side, I think we lost the game because there was a lack of power and speed in our team.
“We lost a lot of duels, man against man, and the speed in our team, not only running speed but also the speed of execution.
“Football is more than techniques; it sometimes requires power and speed. And when you don’t have it in your team and you play against a team that has it, then it’s an issue. That was the big quality of the team.

“We had a difficult game, but on the other side, when you look at it, we can be satisfied with what we did because it was 24 years ago South Africa could qualify for the World Cup.”
Canada, playing in Los Angeles despite being co-hosts, after failing to win their group, will now face the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston in the last 16 on July 4, as South Africa’s World Cup adventure comes to an end.

Banana banana should take heart. Compared to Tunisia, they tried.
Tunisia in Yoruba means Tuni shi Iya.
That’s short for Tuni shi Ikoko Iya.
Ikoko Iya joko jeje, Tuni wa lo shi Ikoko Iya.
The calabash of suffering sat down quietly, then Tuni went to look for trouble by opening it.
Tuni jiya. Baba nla Iya! Tuni don suffer, no be small suffer!
Their suffering started in the pre world cup friendly against Belgium. Dem collect 5-0.
Dem come reach world cup, Sweden give them gbas gbos 5-1.
Japan no feel sorry for them. Na wotowoto 4-0.
But Netherlands took pity on them. You know the Dutch are very nice, kind pipo. So they gave them a humane result. They net them just 3 goals, and even allowed them to score 1.
In 4 games, Tuni shi Iya shipped a whopping 17 goals, and scored 2.
Suffer head sumfin.
So, compared to Tuni shi Iya, banana banana tried sha.
Well done, banana banana. Well done.
Indeed their world cup adventure finished last night, sorry Mbokani, you worked your socks off! You’re indeed a quality and committed player. However,it was joyful and pleasant to see xenophobic South Africa exit the world cup.
Meanwhile, our own Super Eagles has speed and power in abundance,South Africa should have asked us to lend them 5 mercenaries to get the job done!
AKOR ADAM,VICTOR OSIMHEN,ADEMOLA LOOKMAN & FISAYO-DELE BASHIRU.Add maestro,ALEXANDER IWOBI to complete the list.
If they were humble enough to ask,haha..I am optimistic they would have made it to the round of 16 with the listed players…
