Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has disclosed that leaving Enzo Fernández out of the squad for their Carabao Cup match against Luton Town was a joint decision made by himself and the club.
Alonso explained that the choice was based on assessing what was best for the team for that specific game and giving minutes to other players.

The Spanish tactician denied that the omission was due to a request from Fernández to be left out or because of ongoing transfer links with Manchester City.
The manager maintained that Fernández remains a good professional who continues to train well.
“Yeah, but we assess individually, collectively what’s the best for the team, for tonight, what was better, for other players that were playing and we take the decision,” Alonso told Sky Sports.
“It was a decision from myself and from the club.”
On the talent in the squad: “We want to have a complete squad in all aspects, in quality, maturity, personality, young players with experienced players.

“It’s important that young players get help to develop and in those case the experienced players help a lot. Happy with the energy and the attitude of the players.
“The crowd, as well, has been great, we need them for the whole season. Now rest and we’ll come back here on Sunday.”
