Cardiff Defender Eager To Grasp Opportunity

Cardiff’s Greg Cunningham has vowed to make the most of his opportunity with the Republic of Ireland after receiving a surprise call. The 28-year-old joined Cardiff from Preston last summer in a deal worth £4million but he struggled for regular gametime in the Premier League.

Indeed, he turned out just seven times for Cardiff as they suffered relegation and expected to head off for a relaxing summer. But he has been invited to a training camp with the Republic of Ireland in Portugal ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifiers in June.

Cunningham, who hasn’t represented Ireland since 2013, was shocked to receive the call but has vowed to grasp the opportunity with both hands. He told RTE’s Tony O’Donoghue: “I wasn’t expecting it, to be fair. After a disappointing end to the season it was a nice pick-me-up.

“I now have the opportunity to impress. It’s down to me to work very hard for the couple of weeks and show what I can do. “I’d like to think I’m coming into my prime. I’m 28 so I have a few more years left in me. “I know I’m one of the many left-sided players in the squad – the cultured lefties I would say. “There is great talent in the squad, so this is a great to get away and gel together.”
