Chelsea Record Unwanted Statistic In 2-1 Defeat At Wolves

Chelsea recorded another disappointing result on Christmas Eve, after losing 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Sunday.

Goals from Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty earned Wolves the win, while Christopher Nkunku opened his goals account for the Blues.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have already lost eight games after 18 league fixtures.

In an even more shocking statistic, Chelsea have now fallen to defeat 19 times in the league this calendar year, more than any other top-flight club.

Only three clubs in Europe’s big five leagues have lost more times than the Stamford Bridge club.

Spanish outfit Almeria hold that unwanted record after 24 defeats in 2023, while German side Werder Bremen and Serie A’s Empoli are tied on 20 each.

It’s perhaps quite remarkable, then, that Chelsea do not find themselves any lower than their current 10th position in the table, after finishing the 2022/23 campaign a disappointing 12th.

Almeria currently hold up the rest of La Liga as they sit rock bottom on just five points, with zero wins to their name.

Empoli aren’t faring much better as their three wins have helped them to just 12 points this season, warranting a 19th-place berth at Christmas.

Werder Bremen are four points the better on 16 from as many games, though just four wins in that time sees them perched in 13th.
