Chelsea Star Holds Off Signing New Deal

Chelsea are reportedly keen on offering Willian a new deal at Stamford Bridge but the two parties are some way apart on agreeing terms. On Monday, it was announced that both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid had bids turned down for the Brazilian worth around £35million.

The winger turns 31 in August but wants a two-year extension to stay at Chelsea, similar to the deal that David Luiz signed recently, as he enters the final year of his contract. Chelsea are understood to only want to offer Willian an extra year despite their transfer ban, which is likely to hand power to players who want new contracts to stay with the Blues.

Willian has been a key player since making the £30million switch from Anzhi Makhachkala in August 2013 and has played 292 times, scoring 52 goals. It is another awkward situation in what could prove to be a difficult summer for Chelsea, who must contend with the transfer ban as well as find a replacement for manager Maurizio Sarri, who has left for Juventus.
