Ben Chilwell has warned Leicester’s rivals that they “can beat anyone” on their day and they are aiming for a top-six finish this season.
The Foxes have made an impressive start to the new season, as they are one of just three teams that remain unbeaten in the top flight, with their haul of eight points from their opening four games seeing them sit third in the Premier League standings behind only Liverpool and Manchester City.
That impressive start has further underlined many peoples’ belief that Leicester, who were crowned shock champions back in 2016, can finish in the top six this season.
England international Chilwell certainly believes Brendan Rodgers’ side can mix it with the very best and he also feels a top-six finish should be their main aim.
“That’s (a top-six finish) the aim for everyone this season,” Chilwell told Talksport. “We’re definitely confident we can beat anyone on our day, especially with the quality going forward.”
Rodgers certainly appears to be developing a strong-looking squad at the King Power Stadium, as even the summer departure of Harry Maguire to Manchester United has not, as yet at least, derailed their hopes for the campaign.
However, one area where the Foxes are lacking strength in depth is up front, as if they were to lose talisman Jamie Vardy for any period of time then they do not have anyone of the same quality to come in as a replacement.
Kelechi Iheanacho is currently the only other out-and-out striker in the squad but he has only scored four times in the top flight since arriving from Manchester City in 2017.
Summer signing Ayoze Perez could act as a makeshift forward, but his best form with both Newcastle and Leicester has been when he has played on the wing or in behind the main striker.
Vardy has finished as Leicester’s leading scorer in each of the last four years, netting a combined 81 goals, and if he can produce similar figures this term then Leicester surely have to be regarded as top-six hopefuls, but if he doesn’t, either due to injury or a lack of form, then it may be another mid-table battle for the Foxes.
Leicester will put their unbeaten start to the campaign on the line after the international break against one of the sides they are looking to replace in the top-six, as they will head to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
A positive result against the Red Devils, following on from their draw at Chelsea earlier in the season, would certainly make the rest of the league sit up and take notice of the Foxes’ credentials.
