Copa America Outrights: Top Scorer Preview

Argentina’s Lionel Messi leads the odds to net the ball the most in South America’s main national team football competition

The top South American sides will square off beginning this Friday, 14 June, when Brazil and Bolivia meet in São Paulo to kick off the 46th Copa America. This means that the 2019 edition of the tournament, hosted by Brazil, will feature the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Edinson Cavani and Roberto Firmino, among a plethora of other stars. But who will take the crown of top scorer?

First things first

Before you go any further, head on over to the Oddsshark website, find your favourite betting site and get your own account up and running using your credit card. As a new customer and with the Copa America set to begin later this week, there should be a wide range of promotions and special offers available to you.

Where should I be investing my money?

Well, absolutely no surprises here: Lionel Messi, voted 5 times the best player in the world and believed by many to be the greatest footballerever, is way ahead of the rest of the pack in regards to being this Copa America’s top scorer.

The FC Barcelona star is priced at 3.90 to shake nets the most. Although his Argentina’s opening match promises to be a tight clash against tough opponents Colombia on Saturday, 15 June in Salvador, the two-time winning World Cup side’s Group C also features Paraguay and, particularly, Qatar – one of the two non-South American sides invited to the Cup, alongside Japan – who might be an easy target for Messi.

He is also eager to claim his first Copa America trophy after Argentina’s two consecutive losses to Chile in the 2015 and 2015 finals of the tournament – which led a disgruntled Messi to quit the squad for some time.

Next up comes Gabriel Jesus of Manchester City. Although he received his share of criticism in his home nation for his goalless spell at the World Cup last year, the Brazilian striker is always lethal inside the box and will be playing in front of his home crowd. This may explain his upper ranking compared to more renowned forwards like Luis Suárez and EdinsonCavani, and puts him at 7.00 odds, according to Oddsshark, to claim the trophy of leading scorer of the Copa America.

Uruguay’s deadly duo of Suárez and Cavani in third and fourth

Speaking of Suárez and Cavani, who may just be the world’s most dangerous national team striker duo, they come in at third and fourth place, priced at 8.75 and 9.00, respectively, to net the ball the most. If we take into account last year’s World Cup, the pair was key in Uruguay’s solid campaign, when they lost to future champs France 2-0 in the Quarter-Finals.

This could mean that, if Uruguay advances to later stages of the tournament – with odds of this happening being likely – they’ll have plenty of chances to score. Furthermore, Barcelona’s Suárez may be particularly keen to make a new impression on Brazilian soil, since his last competition in the country brings back memories of being sent off after the famous biting incident against Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the Uruguay and Italy clash in the first round of the 2014 World Cup.

Uruguay, who are in Group C together with Ecuador, Asian invitees Japan and Chile, who won the last two editions of the Copa, in 2015 and 2016, will first face Ecuador on Sunday, 16 June in Belo Horizonte’s Mineirão Stadium.

Premier League players well ranked to be the leading scorers

The next two players whose odds put them at the helm of Copa America’s top scorer trophy  play in England’s main football championship. They are Argentine Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero of Manchester City and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool FC, tied in fifth place.

Showing top form in the PL’s last season, when he claimed the title with Manchester City, Sergio Agüero is one of the league’s most deadly strikers ever and broke a series of records in the 2018-2019 season.

This puts him at 10.00 odds to score the most, according to Oddsshark, together with this year’s Champions League champion Roberto Firmino of Liverpool FC. Priced at 12.00, Philippe Coutinho comes in sixth place. The skilled Brazilian attacking midfielder should spare no efforts to prove that his lacklustre performance this past season at Barcelona FC has come to an end.
