Former Nigerian international Benedict Akwuegbu has disclosed that Super Eagles striker Cyril Dessers will get his chance to impress interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen in the senior national team.
Recall that the Rangers star was omitted from the squad that will face Libya in a double header of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
His early season scoring exploits this term haven’t been enough to earn him a call-up for the September and October international windows either.

However, in a chat with Sportsboom.com, Akwuegbu stated that Dessers should show patience and focus on his club career.
“I’m sure Dessers will get his opportunity soon,” he told Sportsboom.com. “I understand how frustrating it can be, but he can’t afford to give up. He must keep working hard, scoring goals for his club, and be ready to seize the moment when it comes.
“There is strong competition for his position, and Nigeria has many options in that area. The coach has to make tough decisions, and unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out in Dessers’ favour. Maybe he doesn’t fit into the current tactical plans.”

For me this guy should be the 3rd choice striker judging by a lot of his attributes and accomplishments but I don’t know which team will not want to have a striker who can shoot with both feet and 2 seasons ago he was Europa conference league top scorer. He has a very positive attitude and yet we are waiting for him to be 35 and vanish like my Obafemi Martins before crediting him with some appearances.
NFF will invite him before he does not give bribe. Shame to all the people killing our football because of selfish interest. Cyriel Dessers is in form more than some Suoer Eagles players however he will not be invited because he does not pay them. Shame to some of our useless football officials.
If you don’t know what to say Akwuegbu, please keep mute. How long does it have to take for a good striker like Dessers to get his chance to play for Nigeria?
He has never played in a real game for us but playing friendly matches. It doesn’t sound well. While Tamilu and Co are getting called up to the Super Eagles. Eguavoen should check himself.
This is why I don’t want him to be the Eagles coach, because he’s very biased period. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
Playing in SPL is as playing in EPL 1 and for a striker that will be difficult getting to SE. Dessers cant be playing against Dundee, Hibernian, Hearts, Ross etc and not scoring week in week out and expect a national call up. SPL is not competitive. He needs to move to a better league to make a statement.
