Donald Qualifies For US Open

World number 512 Luke Donald has qualified for next week’s US Open but fellow Englishman Lee Westwood will not take part. Donald’s star has been on the wane for some time due to injury issues and a dip in form and the 41-year-old has fallen a long way since he topped the word rankings in 2011.

However, the five-time PGA Tour winner will tee it up at Pebble Beach after coming through sectional qualifying in Ohio. Donald has made 13 appearances in the US Open with little success, ending up in the top 10 on just one occasion while missing the cut five times.

He will not be among the favourites for glory this time around but has at least made the start of the California showpiece, with Westwood finishing three shots adrift in qualifying at Walton Heath. Another big-name player to miss out is Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harington, who tried his luck in Canadian qualifying but took two shots too many and therefore also missed out on a spot in the year’s third major.
