‘Don’t Follow In Rohr’s Footsteps’ –Chukwu Urges Peseiro

‘Don’t Follow In Rohr’s Footsteps’ –Chukwu Urges Peseiro

Former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has advised new Technical Adviser of the national team Jose Peseiro not to toe the line of his predecessor Gernot Rohr.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the appointment of Peseiro on Sunday after months of screening of all the nominees for the vacant Super Eagles job.

Nigeria had been without a substantive head coach since the NFF fired Rohr in November 2021, following unimpressive performances by the team.

It was anticipated that the NFF would appoint a new coach immediately after Nigeria failed to pick the ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar,
but it took close to two months after Nigeria lost the ticket to Ghana before the federation finally decided to end the wait.

Chukwu who had earlier lamented that the delay in the appointment of a new coach could jeopardise the country’s bid to qualify for the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast expressed delight that the delay is over.

The former national team captain advised the 62-year-old former Saudi Arabia and Venezuela coach to monitor the local league in the country and develop players.

During his time, Rohr rarely lived in Nigeria throughout the almost five and half years he was incharge of the Eagles. The 68-year-old Franco-German also did not reckon with players in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

“I’m very happy so that it does not delay our preparation for Nations Cup qualifiers and let’s see what he will do when he comes” Chukwu told Brila FM about the hiring of Jose Peseiro

“I will like him to live here, monitor our leagues and our players; let him not be like Rohr who stayed in Germany. Then days to the match, he will come back to the country with the players and so on.

“I will like this one to stay in Nigeria if they have accommodation for him and everything and let’s see how it goes.”

  • Coach christian chukwu that made us loose 2006 world cup ticket to underdog Angola is condemning a coach whom succeeded in qualifying Nigeria in evry tournament, that he was involved. If not corruption…….

    • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

Hahahaha….my brother. Peserio should rather follow in the footsteps of Eguavoen and his dummies.

All the home-based and so-called home-based super eagles Christian Chukwu claimed to be assembling back then where did they end up….?? LMAOooo. He should tell us how far he went with his “home-based project”. At times he would be almost in tears on national TV when his foreign legion do not turn up for away games.

Through out his reign as SE coach, GK Vincent Enyeama was largely the only homebased player in the SE….LMAOOo. Christian Chukwu was TOTALLY dependent on the foreign-based players, despite overseeing a period when Julius Berger, Enugu Rangers, Dolphins and Enyimba all reached the final of CAF competitions, with Enyimba even winning the CAF CL back to back within that period.

Even with his complete reliance on foreign based players, we almost couldn’t qualify for AFCON if not for a dubious, well manufactured penalty gift from the referee against Angola in Benin, and eventually failed to qualify for the world cup in 2006.

It is now that the domestic clubs cannot even reach the group stages of CAF competitions that homebased players should become a priority in the national team, when we can raise a full squad of foreign based players who are truly deserving of callups but have not been given a chance yet.

Ngwa Oga Pajero, dont follow the footsteps of Rohr o…..its bad enough that you have cheapened yourself to be point of signing a vulnerable 1 year contract in which NFF officials can wake up any moment and fire you for not greeting them properly and you wouldn’t be entitled to any compensations of any sort….LMAOooo

“Don’t Follow In Rohr’s Footsteps’ –Chukwu Urges Peseiro”

Point of correction Mr. Chukwu, Paseiro should not follow the footsteps of Oga Rohr and coach Eguavoen. The two coaches were not good enough period.

However, it is a shame as I said few days ago that Nigeria @60 something but NFF can’t produce a Nigerian coach for Super Eagles. Too bad.

If it is not possible allowing foriegners to be the new NFF then it is not logical to hire a foreign coach for Super Eagles.

Call a spade a spade. Mr. Chukwu, Paseiro does not have a good record.

We have Amunike, Egbo and Finidi George to be in charge of Super Eagles. This unknown foriegn coach ba? Hmmmm. Good luck to Oga Paseiro. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

    • Your Mr no nonsense and total football is not good enough. Can you see you are mad? You will say something and still antagonise yourself. Maybe you should come and coach SE single Nigeria can’t get any local coaches good enough instead of mentioning your failed Amunike and co. Ode ni bobo yi sha.

      • Dennis 2 years ago

@tayo don’t mind the clown. He bragged that we will see total football from Mr no nonsense and that getting 3rd at the AFCON wasn’t difficult. When Mr no nonsense failed, he said he didn’t have enough time to prepare the squad. Ghana appointed their coach after the AFCON and his first match was against us yet Mr no nonsense was disgraced. This same omo9ja said we should have Nwakali, Dennis, olayinka, awoniyi, umar, bassey, amoo then amunike should be brought in to assist mr no nonsense. All these players were brought in and we failed woefully

Omo9ja,jimmyball and odegbami are the reasons we have middle fingers

    • Golden Child 2 years ago

@Omo9ja, if you say that Peseiro does not have a good record (Which i disagree with by the way), what will you say about Amuneke, Egbo & Finidi? These coaches you mentioned can not tie the shoe laces of Peseiro (In a coaching context). I am pretty sure big clubs like porto and Real Madrid do not give just anybody the chance to take the reins at their clubs. He has managed Sporting Lisbon and Braga, with the latter going all the way to a UEFA cup final! Amuneke’s only pride & joy is the u17 world cup. He hasn’t achieved anything meaningful since then whilst Mr Egbo’s achievement is winning the league in Albania (A league filled with part time artisans). Don’t get me started with Finidi as he is just cutting his teeth with Enyimba.

My plea to you and to many SE fans who share similar sentiments is that we should contribute in an objective way that will point to the growth and progress of Nigerian football.

  • This Christian Chukwu has come again which kin thing be dis… Oga chukwu I resepect you so much for the player you will but I must say. interms of the modern game Mr Chukwu you are very backward pls allow the coach to do what he feels is best.. you people in NFF and NPFL as well as useless Nigerian goverment should stop thinking it is the National coaches job to improve the league. I don’t understand these people do they want a different SE line up every year?????? so even if the coach picks a player from the league and the player does well then European clubs will come knocking because our league is unkept and pooly managed the player will leave for greener pastures then what? it is as if Chukwu and co just want a team full of NPFL players for the last time until our league can successfully do what Egpytian, Morocco and even South african clubs are now doing in Caf Champions League and Confed Cup, and dominating CHAN what are we knacking our head on the ground for NPFL players for?? haba!! Mr Chukwu go and sit down or better yet use your mouth and go and get the league up to scratch SMH!!

PASEIRO, IF YOU LISTEN TO ADVICE FROM PEOPLE LIKE C.CHUKWU, I HOPE YOU WILL NOT END UP IN DISASTER BY QUALIFY FOR AFCON AND NOT GETTING CONTRACT EXTENSION. IT IS GOOD TO MONITOR PLAYERS FROM OUR LOCAL LEAGUE. BUT THOSE PLAYERS, ARE THEY READY TO CHALLENGE FOR SHIRT AGAINST FOREIGN COUNTERPART. MOST OF OUR PEOPLE IN NIGERIA, EX-PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS TALKING MOSTLY FOR THEIR OWN INTEREST, IN ORDER TO PROMOTE PLAYERS AND BE THEIR FOOTBALL AGENT. AND THIS IS WHAT GERNOT ROHR OBSERVED FROM THEM NOT TO LISTEN TO THEM. BECAUSE HE HAS STAYED IN AFRICA FOR LONG AND UNDERSTAND NIGERIA POLITICS IN FOOTBALL.
** HOMEBASE PLAYERS THAT CANNOT QUALIFY FOR CHAN COMPETITION, U-23 AFCON. IS IT THE HOMEBASE THEY SHOULD NOW INVITED FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS/PLAY-OFF.
WE LIKE TO BE DECIEVING OURSELVES IN THIS COUNTRY CONCERNING THE ISSUE OF INVITING HOMEBASE PLAYERS TO SUPER EAGLES.
** ANY HOMEBASE PLAYERS MERIT TO BE IN SUPER EAGLE SETTING SHOULD GO AHEAD TO PROVE HIMSELF IN CHAN COMPETITION & READY TO GIVE STIF COMPETITION TO FOREIGN COUNTERPART BEFORE GETTING CALL-UP INTO REAL SUPER EAGLE.
      SIMPLE AS A.B.C.

@Ugo Iwunze, this might be the first time i agree with you on this platform. I agree with your view on league development in Nigeria. It is fool hardy for anyone to impress it on a coach to develop the league, there is just no sense in it. In fact i dare say that no league can grow or develop without a good economy; that is the starting point. People advocating for local quota in the SE are either very greedy and are just looking to profit from the sales of players or are just clueless and can’t see beyond their noses. So when you insist on the players being part of the squad and they leave the country for greener pastures, why then doe they stop getting invitation to the SE team? Iwuala is a good example, the minute he went to Tunis, he suddenly became surplus to requirement. This just highlights the deceit of people at the NFF and those benefitting from this scam. If he was considered good enough to be in the super eagles team such that he was keeping players like Ejuke, Dennis out of the squad, how come those players are all of a sudden considered better than him the minute he steps out of the country? The answer is that those players have always been better and they know the truth but a group of people who benefit from such transactions masquerade under the guise of promoting local players so they can profit from it. Unfortunately, some gullible fans fall for it. Another case is the 18 year old Silas Nwankwo whom Eguavoen (Who would have been called into the squad ahead of Dessers if the coach had his way with CAF) and the people at NFF have not considered for a place in the eagles team list since his sojourn abroad.

Back on developing the league, No league can become attractive when it keeps losing its best players. The best players are what attract fans to the stadium and fans at the stadium in their volumes attract sponsors who in turn provide the requisite funds for the clubs to pay better contracts for local players and invest in improving sporting infrastructure and science at the clubs which improve the players. Looking at the state of Nigeria’s economy which is hanging on for life and the insecurities in the country, if you are a good player plying your trade locally and you have the opportunity to play abroad where there is better remuneration, will you stay? I am certain you wouldn’t so as long as there is talent drain in any sector, there will be a dearth of quality in that sector.

People who reminisce about the good ol days when the Nigerian league was at its buoyant best (particularly ex internationals) forget that the economy and the standard of living was much better. Security was also much better then. In fact it was so good that players like Odegbami had the opportunity of playing in England but turned it down on his own account, preferring to play under the warm sunshine of the Nigerian league than the harsh winters in Europe. Fans will throng to the stadiums in numbers just to catch a glimpse of their heroes strutting their stuff in the domestic league. Who can forget teams like “Abiola Babes”, ” The great Sooting (Spelt Shooting) Stars”, “Bendel Insurance” etc.

Still on the effects of the economy, is it the fan who can not afford a decent meal a day that will take his hard earned funds to watch a league match at the stadium week in week out? Most people can not afford that luxury. Please observe any league around the world that flourishes, you will find that it is backed up by a stable and thriving economy. Simply, a good league goes hand in hand with a thriving economy.

The truth is that the best doctors are outside the country, the best engineers are outside the country. Good economies has always and will continue to attract the best talents. Talent will always follow the money. I liken those who are advocating for coach Peseiro to develop the Nigerian league to asking him to fetch water with a basket, absolutely ridiculous!

    Wetin dis one dey TALK??

    Na by that ONE?

Our INDIGENOUS EGUAVOEN that lived in NIGERIAN.

what did we get as the END RESULT???

    FAILURE! FAILURE!! FAILURE!!!

  • Hassan Tia 2 years ago

I would like the frist thing which peseiro must do for Super Eagles is to put a defensive pattern of playing mixed with pace wing playing; secondly he must put a genius number ten( playmaker); thirdly he must watch local leauge in order to select and choose players from it , so these are things peseiro must do when he begin his tenure with SE.

    • Tristan 2 years ago

I would like Peseiro to not listen to you. To be his own man, and not look to the outdated tactics that Nigerians like Eguavoen and Hassan Tia are advocating.
Instead, he should mould Nigeria using modern tactics, the use of wingbacks, pressing game, crosses, set play, fast transitions from defence to attack, strong central midfield passing, alternate formations when defending…
Nigerians only know ‘Okocha’ number 10 tactics, when most countries no longer play that way.

  • As soon as people who matter express their opinion on a sport they played at the highest level, they are instantly attacked. Mr. Christian Chukwu [MON], Mr. Segun Odegbami [MON] and Mr. Augustine Eguavoen all won The Nations Cup and have contributed immensely to the development of football in this country and yet they are constantly labelled ”failures” by some people. If you dare to correct them, having been a witness to the greatness of these men and their colleagues in Nigeria’s footballing history, you’re dismissed or ridiculed as a bigot, one of their foot soldiers etc, etc. All these to defend a coach fired after nearly six years in charge whose record of not winning trophies is as long as my arm. IF only these folks know how some of those people they denigrate their country’s heroes to elevate, truly think of them…….[beneath a jungle monkey].

    • South Africa with their so called One of the BEST leagues in Africa Tag, are no match for Senegal, even fumbling Nigerian team, Algeria, Tunisia(all the teams with 80-95% foreign Born players. Imagine Egypt with Enough foreign pros plus Salah… Senegal will never beat them for the ticket but ‘cos majority are homebase. Enough of this NPFL of a thing. Canada has no female football league but they are one of the best female team currently in the world.
Leave our coaches..let them select whatever they believe is the best for them.
Nigeria can stood so low and even invited one Ali guy from Ghanaian league before that one ran into problem. Players like
*Okoye, Ajayi, Bassey, Zaidu, Aina, Osimhen, Dessers, Aribo..even Awaiting players like Ejaria, Agu, Osayi-Samuel, Solanke, Torunarigha etc are the best we can call upon, No NPFL, I repeat, No NPFL player is better than them. FACT!

APART FROM WESTERHOFF, KESHI, GERNOT ROHR THAT WON MEDAL IN AFCON, QUALIFY FOR WORLD CUP & COACHED AT WORLD CUP PROPER. BY ANALYST, EVERY OTHER SUPER EAGLE COACHES IS A FAILURE INCLUDING ONIGBINDE BECAUSE HE DIDN’T WIN A MATCH IN WORLD CUP.

  • DON'T MIND THEM 2 years ago

DURING YOUR OWN TIME HOW MANY HOMEBASE PLAYERS DO YOU INVITE INTO SUPER EAGLE
** When Enyimba win CAF Champions league BACK TO BACK, how many did you developed into Super eagle. Even DELE AIYENUGBA that is outstanding in saving penalties in that competition was not invited as a BACKUP for Enyeama(as he is not good in saving penalties).
** Most times, you use sentiment, bribe-taking & Ego to be inviting players like ROMANUS ORGINTA, SEYI OLOFINJANA, indiscipline AIYEGBENI into Super eagle instead of better players like Sunday ROTIMI, AIYENUGBA, OBODO, KALU UCHE, O.MARTINS.
** In 2003 AFCON qualifiers in Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, due to your incompetency as a super eagle coach, you almost lost AFCON ticket to Angola. If not the intervention of TAIWO OGUNJOBI(former NFA Scribe) that leave where he sat down watching the match in the stadium and come down to coaching bench to act as a coach and eventually draw the match and qualify for AFCON then.
ALLOW PASEIRO TO DO HIS WISHES. WE DON’T ANYBODY SENTIMENTAL ADVICE

  • Detruth 2 years ago

As a player he is a legend in Nigeria’s football family but talking coaches, the name “Christian Chukwu” invoke a very bad memory.

  • I don’t understand!
Is it the duty of the national team coach to develop a local league?
What’s the NFF and LMC doing to improve the league?
How far have the leagues and home based fared in CAF competitions and CHAN respectively?
Are they doing better than the foreign based? Rohr invited about if not more than 30 home based all through his stay. How many did well apart from Ezenwa.
Oga, give the coach better advice.
The coach should focus on our midfield. Especially a creative midfielder and back ups for Ndidi. Play modern and attacking football with winning mentality,
Scoring goals from set piece and having a solid defense with Discipline.
Then Ike shorunmonu should know why he was brought in and find a lasting solution.
    Thank you.
