Eagles’ Starting Lineup Vs Guinea: Mikel, Troost-Ekong, Chukwueze Dropped; Balogun, Musa, Simon In

Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi, William Troost-Ekong and Samuel Chukwueze have been dropped to the bench for today’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash with Guinea, Completesports.com reports.

The trio started the Eagles’ first match against the Swallows of Burundi last Saturday.

In their place, head coach Gernot Rohr, has opted for Ahmed Musa, Leon Balogun and Moses Simon.

In goal, Rohr has kept faith with Daniel Akpeyi who despite a good showing against Burundi looked short of confidence.

Versatile defender, Chidozie Awaziem, who replaced the injured Shehu Abdullahi against Burundi will start at right-back, while Ola Aina and Kenneth Omeruo are the two other defenders that have been handed starting shirts against the Guineans.

Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo and John Mikel Obi will start in midfield.

Match hero against Burundi, Odion Ighalo will lead the attack in place of Paul Onuachu, and will be flanked by the duo of Moses Simon and Ahmed Musa.

Super Eagles Starting Lineup VS Guinea

There is always a better way to correct others.
The writer is human and such error prone, just like you and I.

Your comment is of no value to him.

This line up looks very good no room for complacency.Apparently, you are as good as your last match this is looking good.

  • Wat happened to troost ekong,GOD hop me

Moses Simon is better than that Chukwueze who was running around like headless chicken against Burundi.
    Good line up.
Akpeyi, Akpeyi, Akpeyi, how many time I call you? No give me heart attack o.

They are humans like us who makes mistakes.. I want to believe ukong was dropped due to injury. I can’t wait to watch what Simon would do today this is obviously a litmus test for him that if he fails might ruin his national career. I pray he does well because he has two Samuels waiting for him to underperform. This competition is great for this team even in midfield dropping Mikel is a master statement you don’t go on holiday believing anyway anytime you can always do the job.. Football this days is more than talent Mikel probably didn’t believe Burundi could stop his shine.. It would take either injury or poor form from etebo for him to find his way back to first 11 because the number 10 is over for him rohn had go against majority of Nigerians call to test him for the final time to see if he has that position in him.. Wishing super eagles the best.. Only a good coach can bring so much competition to his team.. For those criticizing rohn don’t forget our local coaches formula then was pick their first 11 on merit then others are chaff who pay their way. In the last two world cup against France. Immediately Onazi got injured it was over for Nigeria. Ruben Gabriel couldn’t perform under 10 mins France scored two goals.. Just to remind us

I guess, the writer wanted to say Iwobi and he mistakenly wrote Mikel….my only problem with the lineup is omission of Shehu, Collins and Ekong  due to injuries.

If we win this game, the other players like Onyekuru who I am eager to see in action will be called upon fpr the next game.

    Good luck Super Eagles.

If the lineup is true I dnt trust it bcos is obvious the lineup is not strong enough to face Guinea… But I dnt bliv this reporter here

  • Not bad barring Akpeyi.I’m glad Rohr has finally listened and given Iwobi his chance. The man can be so stubborn, see how he was gifting Onazi starting eleven chances, even when we were saying Onazi has CLEARLY declined and needs to be dropped. Finally, the coach learnt his lesson the hard way, when Onazi cost us a lot in a friendly just before the WCup.
I used to tell people Iwobi thru d middle is sumtin that wud not be much of a risk, forget how Arsenal(my team) is using him. In d WCup dat tactics cud have saved us too,eg abi don’t we know dat Mikel was tired in d 2nd half against d Argies?

Now those dat shouted, eventho Iwobi was listed as an attacker, dat d coach shud consider using him as a midfielder in d nations cup, shud be smiling now. That’s competition and that’s how our team shud be.
To me,it’s a better team than the first match. Nor fear for Balogun, one thing with that guy,is his heart– he has a passion dat has a way of pulling him tru wen d going gets tough.
Akpeyi? It’s a pity, this is b4 us. I tell u,Akpeyi is not better than Enyimba’s keeper or Lobi stars keeper, lemme not mention Austin Ejide.Where is Dele Alampasu?
The bright side of d Akpeyi matter today is dat,he has a better midfield in front of him today,d defence too shud play slightly better than d last match,so alas the keeper will breathe more fresh air and it’s an opportunity for his confidence to grow.
I think we shud beat Guinea eventually.
    Shalom

Iwobi played that role all through the qualifiers for the AFCON. This is not the first time he’s been given the chance to play as a number 10.

      • @ayphilli,yes but Mikel was absent isn’t it?It’s a different ball game if Mikel is in the team, like at the Worldcup.
So his playing 10 today is different from his playing 10,when Mikel is not in the team. SO THIS IS NEW.

You can also see that he began to have an eye for goal as the game wore on. It’s a decent effort from him today,I know he has it in him to do better,if allowed to continue there.
“I think we shud beat Guinea eventually.”
As if I already knew it wud be an “eventually” thing. As if I knew Guinea will try hard but eventually the Super Eagles will find a way.
We saw Balogun, that is the HEART I talked about. We saw a better defence with Omeruo,Awaziem and Ola on fire,so it helped Akpeyi gain some confidence.Ofcourse,he still must improve.

So kudos to the Super Eagles.
I just sorry for the team we will play in the third match, lots of players on the bench who are like bulls ready to go on rampage and possibly break into the usual starting eleven.
