Ecuador 1-0 Nigeria: How Gallant Super Eagles Rated

The Super Eagles posted an impressive performance in their international friendly against La Tri of Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey on Friday morning.

Completesports.com’s ADEBOYE AMOSU provides an overview of each player’s performance in the 1-0 defeat.

FRANCIS UZOHO 8
The Omonia Nicosia goalkeeper posted another superb outing. He made a number of vital saves and organised his defence well.

CHIDOZIE AWAZIEM 4
The right-back was at fault for the only goal conceded by his side in the game. He was caught out of position a number of times and was duly replaced by Ola Aina after the break.

WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG 7
The captain posted a solid display. Helped ward off the threats of the opposing attackers.

SEMI AJAYI 7/10
Had another good game. Certainly proved he is ready to be a regular starter in the team.

CALVIN BASSEY 7/10
Make usual forays upfront and was solid at the back.

JOE ARIBO 7/10
The Rangers man was lively all through. He was unlucky not to get a goal in the game.

ALEX IWOBI 7/10
He was was one of Nigeria’s top performers in the game. Iwobi combined well with Joe Aribo in midfield.

MOSES SIMON 6/10
Showed glimpses of his best during the game. An above average showing from the Nantes winger.

SANI FAISAL 4/10
Started the game brightly, but fizzled out afterwards. He didn’t do much to justify his selection.

TEREM MOFFI 6/10
The Lorient forward was denied a penalty in the first half. He definitely needs to do more to prove he is ready for a big role in the team.

CYRIEL DESSERS 5/10
The striker fluffed two good chances in the game. He looked off the pace at times.

SUBSTITUTES

OLA AINA 6/10
Replaced Chidozie Awaziem after the break. Did well in defence and also support the attack as well.

EMMANUEL DENNIS 5/10
Added some spark to the right side of Nigeria’s attack following his introduction.

Thank God Nigeria did not qualify for the world cup. We would have been a complete failure. Common Ecuador we can’t beat yet complete sport said we performed well. Performed well without result? Hmmm. Ghana go do us proud in Qatar

We shall see what your Ghana will do!

Exactly a match that goalkeeper was rated 8 tells you the continued madness of excuses that they’ll be making and yet claim to be gallant. The country is a joke disban this team and you went to disban basketball that has already solidified is place in the world. Confused fellas that will keep rebuilding nonsense. Up next is Sierra Leone and SaoTome after we win those underdog people will start singing high praise of new super nonsense. Nigerians are easily cowed by this politicians but for how long? Alluta continual building industry!

For the first time in a long while, I watched the super eagles play with a structure. This reminded me of the Westahoff’s days. Iwobi and Aribo, played the double six role. They were unlucky to concede the early goal. But they worked hard to try and equalize.

  • Godswill 2 years ago

The coach has continued his failures from where he stopped in Venezuela. Nigeria match is no longer attractive since this bunch of players have proven they’re not go enough. Let’s try home base players

    • The same home based that were rubbished last year by Mexico. Sorry I forgot we are dominating CAF competitions with our local clubs. Bunch of confused jokers everywhere

    • dominic 2 years ago

do you watch the matche at all? i dont think yoi watch

  • Failure to converts your chances early in the game of football will hunt you on the long run. One moment of carelessness by the defenders and lack of taking ur opportunities when it matter most by the striker. Good job by the coach and the boys are also putting the effort. There is need for a proper number 10, who can dribble, open up spaces and square play.

It has been pleasant in recent matches; 5 games no win. But there are positives to draw from going forward.

I appreciate Peseiro’s bold tactics and his substitutions are always on par. He has a philosophy, the implementation is ongoing. Hopefully, the boys key into it and the output is positive in time.

Alex and Joe did well. The pair will do more with the availability of an Ndidi. We sure miss the latter’s grit.
Iwobi keeps showing how relevant he is to the Eagles. Always available ,willing to have the ball and and throw in those passes through tight spaces. He is a vital plug to the team.
Aribo has mostly put in a good shift, I can only ask for more. Cause I know he can do better than he is doing right now. Hopefully, in the right shape , that will happen.
The defence did good( except for Awaziem, who had a bad game at right back). Bassey is simply progressing to Kalidou Koulibaly’s status; elite! I am beginning to enjoy Ekong and Ajayi combo. They communicate well. The problem is that there is no shield from the midfield safeguarding the defence. So it is mostly breached when pressured. And that’s where an Ndidi would suffice. Hopefully, we get to see someone deputise for him, baring in mind, he is injury prone these days. Maybe Al Hassan,Onyedika or a fully recovered Kingsley Michael in the future. Cause Bonke isn’t cutting it for me. Too bland.

And for the attack; Moffi has disappointed. It will be a disservice to Iheanacho and particularly,Awoniyi;Moffi is been called up against them. We have seen all three in the Super Eagles. I dare say, Moffi is the weakest.
As for Dessers; today isn’t his day. He failed to take his chances. But I appreciate the fact that he gets into scoring positions. He just needs to be lethal like he has shown he could be. I believe he would come good.
Moses Simon blows hot and cold .don’t ever know when the real Moses will stand up!. Dennis’ problem is simply his personality. He needs to learn to be humble. He is good. But He could be better if he works on his character.
And the elephant in the room; it is clear to see that the quality of the home based players are not up to the standard required to be amongst the best national teams. Yes. We might be lucky to find one or (pushing my luck) two,who can fill in, but the truth is; they’re simply not there.

We look forward to the Afcon qualifiers. Hoping to have the likes of Osimhen,Lookman etc. join us as we continue to build this project in an upward trajectory. By then we can better access our development with the full complement of our team. Hopefully, we get the results we all desire.
    Can only get better.

It hasn’t been pleasant in recent …*

    • Hush. I always love your comment band analysis. Keep it up. You just said it all. Very matured comment.

      1. I believe the new coach will help this team. His boldness, understanding of the tactical aspect of rhe game, his belief in Nigeria etc will help

      2. I have said it that some players must step up in the suoer eagles to become match winners. Hopefully, new ciach can help them. We have good olayers but no match winners, no special player yet. Some players have that capacity to develop inyi this. The coach can help them.

Olayers like ndidi, iwobi, oshimen, bassey, chukwueze, Aribo, desser, lookman must step up. Great teams alwsy compose of few special players who can help the team in tight situations. We had many during the golden era.

Whoever installed okoye above uzoho did us a bad thing. Uzoho is a better goal keeper. He has shown it.

I wonder the day Aribo will begin to score again. I wonder.

Please let’s get that Kingsley Michael, ndidi back in midfield.

Coach rating 7 over 10…. I watch the game live

  • Though I didn’t watch this match but from comments here and from Experiences I’ve had with this team, I can see things clearly.

*Bassey is a blessing to us
*Ekong shouldn’t be out yet though he can be coming from the bench sometimes
*Ebuehi, Osayi-Samuel are needed in the team in case Aina is not fit and not Shehu.
*For a Coach that loves 3-5-2, Akpoguma has proven to be better than Awaziem, the later is beginning to show why he’s not settled in his clubs.
*In Uzoho and Okoye, we have future.
*Dessers still need to be given chance to play with the likes of chukwueze, lookman and Osimhen. Something tells me he’ll get it right. I just hope he won’t be like Ogbeche and Onuachu that deceived us with their first games.
*We need to keep giving new strikers opportunities till we get it right e.g if solanke wants to be part of the team, let him come till we get it right, seems like it’s the same stories after trying Onuachu, Sadiq, Awoniyi and now Dessers and Moffi.
    * Indidi needs a replacement, I’ve been hearing people talking about Kingsley Micheal, another injury prone player, even Indidi is injury free compare to Micheal. we need a player that’ll always be available and not Bonke.
    * We need to either go back to Eze and Olise or may be go back to the Hoffenham kid that Rohr was talking to before his sack or bring in Ejaria or Dele- Bashiru, in summary, An offensive Midfielder.
    And lastly….HOMEBASE players my foot!

  • The boys performance can be better over time if giving the right support
Friendly matches should provide opportunities to evaluate weaknesses

  • Chibuike 2 years ago

Problem with Nigeria is, everybody is a coach both those that play the game and people who doesn’t even know what’s football. Nigeria league is not ok to the standard those players can brush their game. Everytime people quarrel coaches to invite home base but if they did not perform. Those people will turn back and critices them. I prefer NFF to organise Africa friendlies to those local players. So from there we can chose two or three for team A. I will advise NFF to organise more friendly Matches from South American teams. South America teams are physical and tough than some European teams. Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile are wicked teams . In Europe, I prefer Scandinavian countries because of they tactics and physicality. Teams like Denmark, Norway, Sweden. I like pesaro tactics, unless he have badluck as a person.

Undiluted support for the guys and crew
A rebuilding process that requires our support and encouragement.
Let’s stick together for our Super Eagles!
    Congratulations to all.

    Rating:

Peseiro played two matches having spent two weeks with SE. Eguavoen had only one week and his second was against the Pharaohs of Egypt.

    • John-I 2 years ago

Eguaveon would’ve being the best if he was man enough not to listen to online coaches. If he had sticked to the team that played in Kumasi (a difficult ground where Egypt were spanked 6-1), may be he would still be Super Eagles coach. His problem was listening to quack and desktop coaches.
Otto Addo (the Ghanaian coach) still starts Jordan Ayew. Though 95% of Ghana’s population is against the decision, yet he doesn’t give a damn. That’s how you know a coach who’ll succeed. Not one who listens to tomato and crayfish sellers!

    • That’s true o! @P.A..Eguavoen that won his games with 8 homebased players in his team even with second team.
I”ve even forgotten that Guinea-Bissau and Coton Sports are above Mexico in FiFa ranking..yes. wise man.
No wonder you don’t know color.

Most of guys comment on this web use their mouth to think, how someone would blame coach for this match.some of this players haven’t played together before and coach is also new to them even Africa national teams. Africa are full hatred people, white people think positive than us that is why they have solid plan in everything they do. Success never be automatic it should be work for.

  • They need to play more friendlies. This is the whole essence of friendly, to know your players better and help them gel too. Winning does not really matter here so long the team gets better with every game they play. You can lose all your friendlies so long you win important competitive games. That is what is most important and I hope NFF will do their job by giving them more friendlies especially one that blends local and foreign based players. We have to produce a formidable team and not a bunch of individual talents.

Now everyone is seeing what l noted after the Mexico game. I don’t entirely blame Moffi for lack of goals. If you’re banking on a forward (Moffi) who is allegedly 37th in the top scorers’ list in France for goals, you must be a dreamer. If we start doing these two things, We will win more games. First, instead of standing around and watching our player who is in possession of the ball, start showing for outlet passes Because we don’t do it (lwobi an exception), our players then have to resort towaste precious energy dribbling, just to make a simple pass. Result? Bad passes, interceptions, unnecessary mental and emotional fatigue. A good example of how to do it was shown by Mexico’s. You saw how it worked against our players especially, in the 1st half. Second, why is it that most Nigerian national teams (male, female, U-17 to SE) always ball watch and forget the back post area. When the crosses come and they finally turn around, it’s too late and someone is redirecting the cross into our goal. Just like this game, it always happens. Regardless of who Nigeria coach we hire, none of them has ever observed this continuos juvenile lapse that’s costing us cheap goals and games. Fix those two things and you’ll see results.

Friendlies must not be over-hyped by the media. They present a learning curve for both sides. It’s actually the Ecuadorians who are going to the World Cup to meet Senegal thst should be slightly worried. But if next week the Super Eagles do not beat Sierra Leone in Abuja, then drastic measures must come into force.

  • Alisigweh 2 years ago

Nigeria will win next nations cup.

  • Eliot Omonike 2 years ago

The last I checked SE is 30th in Fifa, hope this guy is not taking us down the drain.

    • We need to allow the coach do more with the boys. Like giving him 6 months to blend.

  • Coache 2 years ago

He has landed and never mentioned WE ARE BUILDING A NEW TEAM. ROHR SPENT 3 YEARS AND KEPT MENTIONING, BUILDING and young team.

AWAZIEM MIGHT COST HIM HIS JOB, His wing was porous against Mexico and Ecuador. IMHO, he should be dropped or asked to bench Ekong. Awaziem is a better centre half than Wing back, maybe lack of game time has dealt with him. He played as a wing back in Egypt 2019 and did wonders
