Michael Edwards has left his position as Chief Executive Officer of Football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s ownership group.
He departed two years into a three-year contract, prompted by frustration over FSG’s failure to acquire a second European club to form a multi-club model.

Edwards, who previously served as Liverpool’s sporting director, was lured back to FSG in March 2024 to oversee the post-Jurgen Klopp transition and spearhead FSG’s broader football ambitions.
The commitment to establishing a multi-club operation was the primary reason he agreed to the role.
However, after FSG effectively shelved those acquisition plans earlier this year, Edwards signaled his intention to resign last autumn and has now stepped down entirely.
A statement read: “Fenway Sports Group (FSG), a global sports, marketing, media, entertainment and real estate company, today announced that Michael Edwards will leave his role as CEO of Football prior to the start of Liverpool FC’s pre-season preparations, bringing to a close his second tenure with the organization during which he oversaw Liverpool’s football operation while also supporting the continued development of FSG’s wider football ambitions.”

His departure marks the culmination of a planned transition, but it adds to growing behind-the-scenes uncertainty at Anfield.
FSG President Mike Gordon is set to assume a more hands-on role in overseeing football operations, as the ownership is unlikely to recruit a direct replacement for Edwards.
