Eguavoen Defends Okoye, Iwobi; Frowns At Fans’ Abuse

Eguavoen Defends Okoye, Iwobi; Frowns At Fans’ Abuse

Super Eagles interim head coach Austine Eguavoen has defended Maduka Okoye and Alex Iwobi after they were singled out for blame following Nigeria’s elimination from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, reports Completesports.com.

The three-time champions crashed out in the second round after a shocking 1-0 defeat to the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.

Okoye was hounded by fans for failing to keep out Youssef Mskani’s shot from outside the area two minutes after the break.

Iwobi, who came in as a replacement for Kelechi Iheanacho in the second half was shown a red card within five minutes of his introduction.

Both faced a lot of flaks on social media with comments ranging from trolling over looks to death wishes upon their families and his loved ones.

“People need to act responsibly and not turn their disappointments into hate speech and threats against some players,” coach Eguavoen told Al Jazeera.

“These players gave their everything and there is no way you can single them out for blame. Playing for Nigeria comes with a lot of pressure, but you cannot bully, threaten or abuse someone for defending the honour of the country because you have access to social media. This is wrong and irresponsible.”

…of course this is true. Some fans have taken it above themselves to be abusive that must not be tolerated.

    • Some pple are saying okoye is the worst goalkeeper in the world, the reason you guys are saying that is because it was the goal that cause us the tournament, he was in the eredivise team of the year last year even though he didn’t start the season as a first choice keeper, he was playing for a relegation threatening side that where in the relegation places, when he became the first team they finish in the European places, he was the third highest keeper with the most clean sheet with 10 clean sheets, even though in didn’t start the season and eredivise don’t have 20 teams. You guys are just angry because if he had save the ball will could still be at the tournament

    • Some fans like that one called Monkey Post. He’ll blame Eguavoen for Rohr loosing his job and I wonder how it’s his fault. When he talks, you don’t see any facts, you only see empty rhetorics, laced with a lot of sentiments and bias. The guy is in love with a white man. Colonial mentality

  • Chima E Samuels 2 years ago

Oga you have started Crossing the Line. Too much talking like you won a Trophy. Go back and check where the defeat came from and organize your team. Everyone should be learning now because you have a long way to Go!

  • Michel 2 years ago

Eguavoen i understand the fact that u want to defend your players ,be careful how u talk to the fans and reduce interviews,u talk too much and that’s part of the reason we lost,u exposed ur strategy to the press because u were carried away,we are trying to move on from iwobi and okoye and u are bringing it back again.this should not be a reason to still play Mr one shot one goal against Ghana, that guy needs to play professional football for at least 3/4 years before he will develop properly as goal keeper, allow him to build his confidence in the league and reduce the number of goals his concedes ,last season he conceded close to 40 goals in about 26 matches and this season alone I think he has concede close to 20 already plz be guided

    • You folks are absolutely ridiculous. Go on YouTube dummies the tactics and philosophy of almost all the top coaches is on there. From Mourinho, Pep, Pochetino, Wenger etc they all have done the analysis of their tactics still doesn’t mean every team can stop it. There is something called execution of tactics that just knowing doesn’t mean you can thwart it. Guordiola that is dominating the EPL with Man city so his tactics are CIA secrets? Opposing teams don’t have thousands of hours of footage to watch and what happens when they face CIty? The teams that park the bus some playing 5-4-1 how successful are they in stopping Man City? Nigerians are big reason can’t have anything good because you all are always judging everything with emotion instead of critically looking at things and find ways to build on the positives. Here you have a coach missing several key players, barely had full squad for a few days before a major tournament yet still played good attacking football and dominated opponents that played in the so called Arab cup where you will think they will have a better understanding of each other. Even the Tunisia match we lost if Oshimen was there i’m almost 90% sure he would have scored that goal Sadiq missed. How many times have we seen him run into those through passes and either blast with power, the keepers legs was wide open and he could have got it through there or chipped it into the far corner. That is almost Oshimens signature goal.

I’m sick of Nigerians and the short sightedness. Eguavon has given us a template to build on to be dominant and instead of us appreciating and trying to build on that you clowns are still on the Rohr, local coach, foreign coach camps as if all our objectives are not the same. If SE gets another winger like Simon on the right side, Oshimen back with a good back up striker, a solid consistent AM as good as Iwobi on his good days or better and with Eguavon philosophy of mass attack, mass defense and play every game like a cup final with a high intensity press (gegenpress) like we saw against Egypt and in the group phases. You think Nigeria won’t dominate the world while entertaining us? You folks are so emotional you don’t even realize how stingy and compact our defense really was. Now add the few minor tweaks to add to the explosiveness of the attack from the Wings and Middle and their you have a winning team that is ready to take on anybody. That was my major problem with Rohr started well then suddenly became scared of everyone. If you cannot dominate and impose yourself and game plan on Cape Verde. If you are scared to venture forward and play your game against such opposition is it when you face the likes of France, Italy, Germany, Belgium Argentina that you will play with confidence? If you are jittery against teams where their players are local or play in obscure leagues what do you think will be the mindset or psyche when it’s Mbappe, Messi, Gnabry, Ronaldo etc on the other side of the opposition?

It’s just sad reading some of the commentary on here and very depressing. Now i see our problems go beyond just leadership. The backwardness and poverty has really skewed a lot of our thinking and I’m just consider myself blessed to have been able to travel and see how things are done and built on in developed countries. I pray to God he gives us better leaders because it really pains me to see the ignorance, anger, and just vile ppl spew on here rather than seasoned, thoughtful and insightful reasoning.

Let’s build on what we saw here with Eguavon . He doesn’t have to be in charge but I have no doubt of his philosophy is implemented with minor variations SE will really enter a golden era. Imagine explosive wingers like Simon on both wings, a solid AM to feed Oshimen through the middle and the high intensity mass attack mass defense we saw against Egypt and in group phases with clinical finishing which team in the world do you think can stop us?

You do have a chip @Rez.I have come across your post twice first one was your reply to AY.And wasn’t any different from this one both distasteful.

Show some respect to forum members.Agreed you do have your opinion but you don’t have to make others look stupid on theirs.Learn to argue with respect.
You said you are opportuned to live in a civilised world, and so what?Who cares..we are here to discuss football no one cares where you are resident besides I don’t know it’s a privilege to live outside ones country.

      • @Rez. All your points are VERY VERY GOOD. But as you have just said, Nigerians are the major problem. Thank God we live abroad, we see how things work. I’m wondering why we are so fast to abuse our own each time. Insult, abuse and blame all the time, without looking for positives in anything. We support the white man, but will abuse and insult our own like common criminals. May God help such a Nation where no one believes in you, before you ever say Jack, they’ll badmouth you and bring you down. Eguavoen defended his players and that’s why they’ve been abusing and insulting him. He could be your father or your uncle. He’s absolutely correct. All we do is abuse and insult ourselves because we have access to internet. Our attitude as Nigeria is very bad, while we blame the government for our woes as a people, we will NEVER move forward without a change of attitude. I’m waiting for your insults as well, like you’ve just insulted Rez for saying the truth you people hate to hear. So please start the insults before you go to bed.

      • I wish Nigerians just stop with curses and abuses 2 years ago

I just read something on Aljazeerah now. The same thing coach Eguavoen is saying. The players have resulted in deleting their social media handles because of abuses, insults and death threats. I won’t be surprised if players start refusing to play for Nigeria in the future for the fear of being abused for loosing a football game. It’s so shameful the kind of people we are. Very bad loosers when it comes to football. Once we loose we begin to abuse, insult and call player’s names for loosing. Same way Odion Ighalo’s life was threatened. We are a sick people!! May God help Nigeria. I wish those players don’t come for the game against Ghana.

  • Chima thank you, cause you like expressing your mind. eguavoen no be coach you’ve opted for. Eguavoen please go and learn and stop talking ok

  • MOTION 2 years ago

Eguavoen sir you are no longer a defender you are coach go and coach your lad privately and leave fans alone also reduce your interview you talk too much

  • Obest 2 years ago

Augustine Egauavon, Pls talk less, Let your talk be on the Pitch. SE have a game of war, In Accra, or Kumasi or Temale, where ever the Ghanaians choose to play the first leg is going to be war. Expect a hostile crowed over there like never before. Start to prepare the minds of the SE players. If they take you to Temale which I suspect they may, then expect a World War. Trust me, Select only players who can fight for 90 plus minutes other wise, the damage would be done in Ghana. Wish you good luck and please start planning now

  • Ako AMADI 2 years ago

Most of those issuing death threats to Okoye and Iwobi have never paid a kobo to watch football in a Nigerian stadium

  • When I say the man talk too much rather than watching the clips of his opponet someone here was abusing me.

By now again I say egu suppose to be strategising his plan, wait ho abi you think the gahnians team you saw in afcon will be the same team? If you think so egu you are just on your own.

Rather than defending average players please concentrate on those that can truly get result for you.

Sometimes I cry in my heart when I hear the way you Nigerians treat your own. I’m not black, I’m not even a Nigerian, but you people are doing a great dis-service to yourself by talking down on your own. I’ve been following the thread since the day the coach was employed. It’s from one abuse to the other and I’m wondering if you Nigerians are sick in the head. How many European teams have y’all seen with an African coach, they don’t do that BS, they use their own coaches. The coach hasn’t said anything bad. He only defended his players. I’ve seen Mourinho and other coaches down here in Europe defend their players, coaches are trained to do so, y’all are being so messy right now! Your former coach has granted more interviews in the course of 1 month, but the moment your own who is a Nigerian does so, y’all begin to troll him with so much insults and abusive words. You people are very sick in the head for loving a white man more than your own. Do you actually thing we white people like you?? Be honest to yourselves you dumb a**es, you are foolish to think that white people love you. Read between the lines and stop using your f***king smelly mouths to abuse your own people. Any team can loose. Y’all grow the h**l up for f**k sake!

  • I’m not yet seeing eagles in world cup. Truth be told they will yet again cage Simon or other wingers put upfront. Nigeria never sabi play ball abeg.

  • Sunnyb 2 years ago

Coach jerry springer aka talking machine Ghana is recruiting their foreign born players to play for them, they’re doing everything possible to beat us you are here talking everyday, granting interviews ever hour. I never supported you because I know you don’t have it, but some respected folks in this forum said we should give you a chance, we did but u are disappointing so far, pls go and beat Ghana, by now u guys should be reviewing some black stars matches, pls no more interviews.

  • WHY BLAMING OKOYE AND IWOBI INSTEAD OF EGUAVON.

just like I said earlier in my previous post/mail on the Battle of the Eagles. The Tunisian technical crew did a lot of work on our players, they cutoff the supplies to our attackers, held their own in defense as they equally push for attack. Fortunately for them it paid off.
I believed that Augustine Eguavon with all his experience as a player and a coach ought to have seen that, he ought to have been flexible when it comes to twisting/switching formation.
The Tunisian technical crew predicted him Eguavon possible starting lineup and they got it right.
Go back to that match u will agree with me that we missed that no10 man.
He ought to have actually started Iwobi as the no10 man with 4:3:3 formation, or pushing Joe Aribo as a No10 man, then bringing Frank Onyeaka to pair with Ndidi as two 4.

So I will beg those pushing the blame to either Iwobi or Okoye to stop, because if there is anyone to blame, it should be Eguavon himself.

    Thanks.
    MrNag.

    • Greenturf 2 years ago

I wrote about this same formation before the game though my line up in midfield was Ndidi,Aribo,Iwobi.Iheanacho to play as the pointman, instead I got my post attacked for not listing Iheanacho to play behind the striker Awoniyi instead.
The argument was Iheanacho is best a midfielder wow..I made references of his successes playing as a centre forward for Manchester city later Leicester city but the general opinion would be Nacho is best in the attacking midfield which is strange because Nacho contributes less in the midfield. He loses possession and most times get lost in games you start wondering if he’s still playing or substituted.
In my opinion in the future,if Eguavoen must play Nacho from the start I would rather he maintains a three man midfield and just one left winger or right, then whoever would play as a right/left back should as well function as a right/left winger.
To win a tournament you must have a solid midfield wheras emphasis was mostly on the attack for the Eguavoen’s super eagles sadly.

  • @Ayo i am supporting your comments you see some of us are not getting it right from Russia 2018 world cup when the team lost to the Argentine they said they will learn their lesson until now they’re still learning their lesson what i about these present players they’re been over hype of which i have stopped since the day they lost to Tunisia at afcon round of sixteen they think is funny but these present guys should know that they just created history these guys don’t have that raw passion for nigeria too much over hype.

    • Our team is far from being ok. Alot of average players who not are game changer.

I doubt it if many of these players do read games while on bench.

How can you be brought in to change the corse of a game and yet you couldn’t make any impact upon your coming into the game.

Am not aiming at any particular player but if players from local league in northern african country can be getting it right. Then some of our europe base players should have the fear of God and humble themselves.

  • Golden Child 2 years ago

I do agree with him, there should be no room for hate in our society. NO ONE DESRVES TO FEEL THREATENED FOR PLAYING FOR ONES COUNTRY. That being said, NFF and Eguavoen have a huge task ahead of them.

Ghana appear to be very serious to qualify for the world cup, they are on the brink of getting an Epl coach and get some talented foreign born players for the crucial tie. Our people feel the team is ok as it is and this unsettles me. Still no update on lookman and ejaria, I doubt if they plan to do a shakeup in the goal keeping dept. With Eguavoen , expect 6 local players.

  • Eguavouen thinks it’s funny ok we are waiting and watching black stars match go soon come after losing he will tell us the boys gave their all talking coach somebody should tell him he should stop talking cus he is annoying.

The self-destructive button the sports minister pressed is causing all the pandemonium in our football lately.
We warned seriously against that malicious action rather it went on deaf ear.
The exertion of authority by Dare was just a personal one a very selfish, cruel, unsophisticated and brutish action not minding the consequences.Actually he isn’t bothered but sadly the fans are, chaos everywhere from the players the coaches and the fans.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

  • This is all NFF’s and Sport’s Ministry’s fault.

  • Omo9ja 2 years ago

Because you didn’t do your job properly coach Eguavoen.

You did a shabby job by not checking and strength the goalkeeping department very well before the tournament. Instead, you and Agu took Akpeyi and John Noble to Cameroon.

You can’t tell me you didn’t see enough of Okoye before the Afcon.

You know what Uzoho is capable of. At least if you don’t believe in Adeleye but how about the goalkeeper that was in goal against Mexico? That guy is good too and he’s in NPL if am not mistaken.

Yes it was Iwobi, Okoye, coach Aku and you the head coach fault period.

You are segregating yourself out of the matter. Mba. You people should apologize to us.

You left out the strikers who can help you and you wasted a slot for a striker that already retired. Those are the things you to fixed if you have to be in charge of the Super Eagles from now on.

Fellow Nigerians, please let forget the defeat. It was really painful though but we have to let go of that incident. We have a huge task ahead which is to qualify to the world cup in Qatar. But coach Agu need to be replaced. Nigerians are looking forward to see our best players. We can’t afford a defeat against Ghana. Give Dessers a chance this time around coach Eguavoen.

They might cage Osimhen and others strikers when we play Ghana because they are well known. That is why Dessers have to be your another weapon if you know. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

Pls there is no need hiding feelings.tell someone his mistakes so dat he can learn.Egauvoen kept on repeating a particular mistake until the eagles lost.eguavoen knew dat Umar Sadiq was an amateur who is not a good finisher, yet he went ahead to play him knowing too well he can not score,in such a tough match against tunisia.does it mean there is no other player who can maximize chances
among those sitting at bench .eguavoen distroyed eagles afcon ambition

Only people who do not have personal and professional satisfaction in their lives would wish someone dead over a game of football. The players gave their all.we lost. There’s the World cup qualifier against Ghana. That should be the focus.

    • The law of association : When you assemble the best talents you have for a match or tournament and then employ a quack to lead them. The result by the law of association will be quack.

Your professionals will look like quacks on the field. No matter where they play.

Until we get things right from the Sports Minister, The NFF and we the fans. We are not going anywhere.

Our history is filled with failure playing a predictable wing play pattern football. Right from USA 94 against Italy, then France 98 against Denmark and so on and so forth.

We cannot continue like this. If this were a developed country people like Sunday Dare should be sacked by now. Segun Odegbami will be vilified for writing rubbish in CSN. Every other person including Eguavoen will be ostracized from handling any of our National team.

England lost the Euros recently on penalties and 3 black players – Tammy Abraham, Hudson Odoi and one other playing for Manchester United were fingered as the reason for their loss.

It took the FA, Corporate sponsors and the British Government to calm the English fans.

In Nigeria we are celebrating failure by arranging dinners and public speeches

      Na wa.

Good evening to everyone on here just decided to say hi because i haven’t been on here for a while. My heart was shattered by our loss to Tunisia.I had high hopes because of the team’s previous performances before our last match against Tunisia but sad it didn’t go the way i had expected.I couldn’t come on here nor any other sport website because the loss really hurt me so badly. I had been in so much pain and was having trauma but I’m glad i feel better now. Anyway i still believe in the Coach and the team to do much better next time. I wish our players and coach all the best . I will continue to support the team because i believe in this team.

I am ashamed to share a country with these fools who wish somebody dead because of football. This is one of the reasons why we often suffer misfortune, because of the numerous evil individuals that abound in the country.
Agreed, Iwobi and Okoye made mistakes in the Tunisia game. So they should have their lives snuffed out for this reason? After killing them, please don’t stop there. Go ahead and use them to prepare pepper soup!
If I was Iwobi or Okoye, I would seriously consider international retirement at this time. I find the idea of playing and bringing pleasure to these miscreants revolting. Since they want to kill players who make mistakes on the pitch, the players should leave the national team for them, let them come and play. Their boot size kuku dey for market. It’s a huge shame and disgrace really, that we have individuals in these country who wish someone dead because of a football match.
As Abdulrazak said, “Only people who do not have personal and professional satisfaction in their lives would wish someone dead over a game of football”.
In addition to that, these people have zero fear of God and are completely bereft of sense and thinking ability. I actually find myself no longer regretting the fact that we crashed out so early in the competition. If we had won it, these fools who wish other people dead would have enjoyed the victory. Let them gnash their teeth in pain and sorrow, these evil ones who have it in them to wish death on their fellow men. Let them rub their noses in the failure.
I do feel for the more noble-minded Nigerians out there, the true SE fans, who are downcast because we lost. However, I must say that as long as we have evil ones like these among us, we can expect to see more disappointments in the future!
You wicked souls, change your evil ways.

Where do you think Enyeama was at Okoye’s age, not football age o! You really sound like you are also guilty of this hatred some Nigerians have been spewing on Okoye and Iwobi

  • Olusegun.B. 2 years ago

Apart from these players being mentioned for the mistakes done during the match , one person who should take the whole blame is actually Eguavon himself because he didn’t show that he had other ideas when it comes to technical formations against Tunisia. He made the team predictable and that ain’t good . The opponent knew who Moses Simon and Samuel chukwueze are but never thought of winning the match through the midfield . When you know that they were going against the wings , why not work more on the midfielders to create the winning.

    He knows this

The fans definitely have the right to complain about what’s going on with their team . Though it shouldn’t be too rough .

Another thing I want to complain about is the fact that Jay jay okocha interferes with The coach’s decision by yelkbg him to place Alex Iwobi as a number 10. Alex himself should proves that himself in which he’s not been an impressive number 10 Joe Aribo who lays that number is being deployed to the same defensive midfield role along with Ndidi which is not making him to do what’s necessary. Leon Balogun himself have seen Joe play that number and have told the coach to do so . But it seems there’s this kind of politics going on in the team .

There’s also the issue of wingers with both legs we need a right winger who can switch effectively with Simon . And also Dessers and Bassey and Amoo shouldn’t be left out in team selection.

They wanted ROHR out and Equavon in. They said any coach can win nations cup under 2 weeks with the super stars we have. But Equavon was not just any coach, and he was not new. This is a man who has been with the team as Technical Director and a former coach himself.

In Life be careful what you wish for. You guys said let’s fail with our own, so why complaining? @Chima E. Samuel you are among them, why are you bittered now?

You lots wanted tiki taka football, local content coach, and local content players. You guys keyed into the darkness of Minister Dare and the clueless Pinnick. So why are you guys blaming the players for your frustrations in life. None of those players is related to Buhari, Dare and Pinnick who are causing problems for you guys.

The blame goes to Equavon for greedily accepting that job, I believe he was pushing for it, believing he would achieve glory with the current set of eagles with his own mix up players. He would have known that the time is too short and honourably reject the job, allowing Rohr to finish up what he started. I strongly believe we wouldn’t have gone out in the round of 16.

During Rohr time a lot of you use to blame the coach not players. So blame the coach and not the players. Equavon my blame goes to you alone.

      To what end then?
What would you stand to gain by abusing and cursing players for loosing a football game?
Is it a matter of life and death?
Have you ever seen any player on earth, who wears a jersey and boots and makes up his mind to just go and loose?
Consider if one of them were to be your son and people are healing curses and abuses on him for loosing a GAME OF FOOTBALL. How would that make you feel as a parent?
They didn’t steal from you, like the Nigerian government, they haven’t committed any crime punishable by the curses and abuses, why abuse a fellow human being?
Why curse a human being you didn’t create for no crime, just for loosing a game of football.

      To what end?
      To what gain?
As a human being myself, I wish they stop playing for Nigeria and face their clubs and families, those ones will never curse them.

      Thank You.

By the way, I’m waiting for you to start cursing and abusing me as well, for what I just said. I know a lot of people would abuse and curse me too. We’re Nigerians, we love to curse and abuse. Oya make una begin abuse me oo.

Complete Sports forumites, Nigerians, we need to change and stop cursing and threatening players for loosing games. A lot of our players, both those born abroad and local players are considering not honouring call ups anymore. This is from a very reliable source. Here, Arthur Okonkwo is saying the same thing. It’s a game of football, you guys please stop this. People win and loose.

Rohr Asslickers if you can’t copy and paste where I wished the players death then you already know the curses you have placed on yourselves since you know how to rant without facts. Funny set of clowns always looking to twist words or make a fool of themselves. I urge Eguavoen to go back to drawing board because Ghana match is too close for all this talking and some He goats started making noise left and right trying to disturb my peace.

  • The best way now to distract fans mr egu, is to start strategising and start talking about how you want to boost your mild field, how to fortify your striking line and goalkeeping area.

Let us know what you intend to do about the WC play off.

You will see that fans will quickly forget about the pain of afcon exit.

Stop bringing back bad memories of afcon serezo. Leave fans alone, it is normal everywhere. Brazilians don’t usually take it lightly with their team whenever they crash out of world cup tournament. You need to see the reaction of the germans after early exit during the last world cup.
Same way the English were saying all sort of racist comments about those three black guys that missed penalty against Italy.

My advice to you serezo please take the mind of se fans away from afcon loss by bieng proactive about wc playoff.

If you were given the mandate to lead eagles on those two matches please don’t fail. If you fail to qualify just disappears away Completely from anything that has to do with se.
