Rivers United Technical Manager, Stanley Eguma, says a return to one of the CAF inter club competitions next year is his top priority in the ongoing NPFL abridged league, Completesports.com reports.
“First we must ensure that we finished amongst the top three teams in our group so as to qualify for the Super Six tournament,” Eguma who is called Capello by his fans told Completesports.com.
“From there, we can fight for one of the continental slots.
“This is our ambition for the season, to ensure we picked a ticket back to continental football next year”.
Rivers United finished second behind Rangers on the final table in 2016 to earn a bragging right for the CAF Premier inter club competition, CAF Champions League in 2017.
But their continental title dream ended prematurely following a 4-3 aggregate defeat to All Mereikh of Sudan in the final qualifying round games.
Dropping down to the CAF Confederation Cup, Rivers United, otherwise known as Pride of Rivers could not scale the group stage hurdles.

Rivers United current squad was a departure from their previous seasons dominated by big name players, but Eguma insists injection of youngsters won’t harm their set objectives this term.
“It is the decision of the management of the club to look inwards for young players with the right qualities and mentality,” Eguma explained.
“That’s our policy for the season and of course, that’s reason we did not go for big name players.
“I think it is a wise decision because the young players are responding and adapting to our philosophy.
“We hope they gel on time to meet the demands of the abridged league”.
