England defender Lucy Bronze has become the first high-profile English footballer to back UEFA’s potential boycott of FIFA competitions.
Speaking during her pre-season tour, she stated that taking such a stand is necessary for the long-term future and integrity of the game, increasing pressure on FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Tension escalated after Infantino proposed selling commercial stakes in competitions to private investors, drawing fierce backlash from Europe’s governing body.
Although FIFA ultimately abandoned the controversial investment plan and Infantino issued an apology for errors, UEFA maintained that the apology “changes nothing.”
Several national associations, including the English FA and the Football Association of Wales, have also moved to withdraw active support for Infantino’s leadership.
The standoff threatens upcoming international fixtures, with the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland and the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifiers looming as major testing grounds.

However, defending the action as vital for future generations of players, Bronze, in a chat with The Guardian, noted that European players stand firmly by their collective beliefs.
‘The message that we stand by … is “for the good of the game”,’ England regular Bronze said via The Guardian. ‘The players who play in those competitions, the European players, we stand by our beliefs and what the right thing is for our game.
‘If that means boycotting competitions, then that has to happen. It’s for the future of the game and not just for me today and tomorrow, it’s for all the little girls or little boys who come after us to make sure that they’re in a good place, when the game is moving forward in decades to come, not just tomorrow.’
