Enyeama: ‘I am still in Contention To Play Again’

Former Nigeria captain Vincent Enyeama has denied reports that he has hanged up his playing boots, Completesports.com reports.

According to local media outlets the 37-year-old, who hasn’t played a competitive fixture since April 2017, has called time on his career, but Enyeama insists that is not the case.

He told FrunSports in an exclusive interview that he still wants to play football and that he is not pursuing a career in golf: “I enjoy playing golf so I understand the confusion. I have been staying in shape.”

“It is not secret that I love football and I am still in contention to play again,” the former Super Eagles shot-stopper added.

Enyeama is one of Nigeria’s most decorated players and after winning back-to-back CAF Champions League titles with Enyimba he forged a successful club career in Israel and France.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner was capped 101 times by his country and played in three FIFA World Cup tournaments.

  • Hehehe. I guess you mean ‘still in contention’ to play club football, not international football/selection?

If for club side fine, but nation team thank you for the memories. Not saying in a bad way. Thank you.

Goalkeepers are able to play for much longer periods. At 37 years of age, he may be past his prime, but definitely not finished. I recall Peter Shilton of England playing for the 3 Lions in his early forties. He finished his career with Leyton Orient in 1997 at the age of 48. If Enyeama proves to be the best goalie we have at the moment, and is open to coming out of retirement, then Rohr would have a decision to make.

If enyeama at 37 without a club is still hoping to play then why is rohr not giving chance to ejide who is 34 and currently playing in isreal premier league. Beside why are all of you silent about ejide? Enyeama was never a better keeper than ejide it was just a matter of luck on his side. Now that enyeama is not there please make una help me beg rohr make he call ejide or else its more than form and experience to play for eagles. For christ sake we have an experience goal keeper playing as first choice in isreal top division wat else do we want?

Ejide is a goalie I have always admired for 2 reasons.
        1) His ability. He is a very good, agile, confident goalie.
        2) His humility. For many years, he was second to Enyeama. Yet no report of bad belle or quarrel. He always supported Enyeama 100%. I love that attitude.
If he is doing well in Israel as you said, then Rohr is well advised to give him a look. If Ejide is open to the idea, an invitation extended to him would be welcome.
