Euro 2024: Portugal Beat Slovenia On Penalties To Reach Quarter-finals

Portugal beat Slovenia on penalties to reach the Euro 2024 quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on Monday.

The game was decided via penalty shootout after 120 minutes of football failed to produce a goal with Portugal winning 3-0 and Diogo Costa was the hero as he saved three spot kicks.

Cristiano Ronaldo was presented with the opportunity of giving Portugal the lead in the 105th minute in extra-time but saw his effort saved by Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

A sobbing Ronaldo had to be consoled by team-mates following his missed penalty.

However, Ronaldo put aside the missed penalty as he converted Portugal’s first effort in the shootout.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes got Portugal’s second while Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva netted the winning spot kick.

Portugal’s Costa made saves from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic to send them through.

He becomes the first goalkeeper to save three penalties in a Euros shootout, while Slovenia is now the first team in Euros history not to score in a penalty shootout.

Following their progress into the quarter-finals Portugal will take on France.

The French advanced into the last eight thanks to a 1-0 win against Belgium earlier on Monday.
