Exclusive: 2022 WCQ: Liberia Game Will Be Decider For Eagles -Unuanel

Former Kwara United coach, Samson Unuanel has urged the Super Eagles players and technical crew to take Nigeria’s 2022 World Cup qualifier against Liberia like a Cup final.

After suffering a first World Cup qualifying defeat in 40 years last Thursday in Lagos, to the Central African Republic, the Super Eagles gained back some redemption with a 2-0 victory over the Central African Republic on Sunday at the Stade Omnisports in Douala.

Nigeria now leads the group with nine points from four games after an inspiring performance from Gernot Rohr’s men.

With the team set to face Liberia in what could be a decider in November, Unuanel in a chat with Completesports.com, said that the Super Eagles must maintain a high level of concentration and avoid CAR mistakes.

“We have gotten to a point where every point will definitely count for the Super eagles. The game against Liberia will decide the fate of the Super Eagles, most especially if Cape Verde get a favourable result against CAR.

“We must not toy with this game if the team must qualify for the final knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Liberia should not be a stumbling block for us. It’s three points or nothing.”

  • We also need to appeal to the NFF to allow them to play the game in Uyo. I do not know of any other country that decided to the advantage of their guest while hosting a match. For our players to perform optimally they need the best pitch Nigeria because that is what they are used to where they ply their trade. We need to call on the NFF to do the needful if we are really serious

@Debo, the situation on ground is beyond good pitches and we have players.

Do you think NFF do not know what they are doing?

The Nigeria Football Federation know that if they take matches to any where else in the country apart from Lagos, Nigeria may not qualify to the next year world due to the lack of modern knowledge of football of coaching crew of the Super Eagles.

Plus, NFF have no money to hire a new coach and pay off Oga Rohr.

So, the only thing NFF can do is to bring matches to Lagos because they understand that Super Eagles players and coaches will be more serious there.

I have no faith in this coaching crew of the Eagles.

The Balogun stadium is not that bad for our players to win matches.

The inability of the coaches to select the best squad, to have game plan and strategy to win matches may be a big blow to the Nigeria football if cares is not taken.

Also, the well being of the players is another thing.

The coaching department is totally weak. We can’t win matches except NFF do something about it.

We have so many things that going on with the team that have to be corrected before the next match otherwise, hmm. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

Sometimes I wonder if you do read what I type, after we qualify for the last world cup playing at uyo beating Algeria n Cameroon with beautiful football n matches to spare then u come here n spew nonsense… really u baffle me..odegbami wrote an article on pitches in Africa and I did comment saying nff will derail our qualification with bad pitches.they should maintain uyo for se..

  • Someone at NFF is getting something out of the Eagles playing in Lagos. Why must we play in Lagos when national pitch is like a backyard play ground.

The coaching crew lack a real pattern or style of play for Super Eagles espcially a defensive one; so I think if this want to success with SE they must play with a defensive depth style in order to protect SE goal side, this needs or requires many phiosophy to do it, just like chossing a strong defensive midfielders, a strong center backs except the dual(Awziem-Omeruo),but William Troost and Leon Balogun can’t do an excellent task cause they are so shaky on the rival’s pressure;Wilfred Ndidi hasn’t any strong subistitute so Oga Rhor must add for example Azubuike Okechukwu or philip bailling to SE squad in order to strenthen (DM) or to put a sub one for Ndidi if he injures. Also Oga must search for real number 10, I thik Ovie Ejaria can do this task or Michael Oliseh; the best formation Rhor can play is 5-3-2 cause this formation gives or grant SE line-up plethora in midfied so SE can control or possesse the match; if SE play with this style they can beat any team in Africa may be a quality World class team in the World Cup final in Quatar if they qualify to this tournament.
