Exclusive: 2022 W’Cup Playoff: ‘Twist Your Tactics Against Ghana If Situation Warrant’ –Shorunmu Tells Eguavoen

Former Nigerian goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu has advised the interim coach of the Super Eagles, Austine Eguavoen to be more technical and tactical with his approach ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff against the Black Stars of Ghana.

Both West African giants crashed out of the just-concluded 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon.

Nigeria are seeking to qualify for the World Cup a seventh time and, since 1994, have missed only one of seven editions. The last of three appearances by Ghana was in 2014.

The winners over the two legs will advance to the 2022 FIFA World Cup billed for Qatar from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18.

However, in a chat with Completesports.com, Shorunmu stated that the Super Eagles possess the quality to overcome the Black Stars for the World Cup ticket.

“I am optimistic that the Super Eagles will qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. However, I believe the technical crew under the watchful eyes of Austine Eguavoen would done their home work by analysing the mistakes they made against Tunisia and ensuring that such mistakes doesn’t repeat itself.

“Ghana will definitely be a tough test for Eagles due to the rivalry between the two teams. But then, a situation whereby things are getting more complicated, I expect the technical crew to twist his tactics in a bod to achieve his result.”

When last did Eguavoen attend a refresher course on coaching? The Ghana game is too big for his temperament. Thank God he has no excuse of lack of enough time with the team, because the Black Stars coach is equally new.

As a student of Westerhof, I expect him to open home based camp two weeks b4 the 25th March and groom the team so that the Pro will feel threatened when they land in a nibbling camp. I also expect the LMC to give the NPFL 8 days break for the match.

The beer parlour vendors, businesses will make it if we qualify for world cup. The world cup is too precious for the entire country than for Eguavoen to ruin it for us(God forbids). I pray we qualify, otherwise Ghanaians will resume calling the team SUPER CHICKENS

Always have a “what if” plan always. It’s not enough for coach Eguavon to tell the players to “Go out there and express youselves” Not having a strategy for any football match is ineptitude and gross incompetence.

In the match against Tunisia, one player mentioned that Cerezo just said, this is how we want to play. Without exploiting the weakness of the Carthage Eagles. We paid dearly for that as a result.

In the match against Egypt, Quiroz kept changing the formation in the second half to see if they can get at least a draw. It did not work but I saw his efforts.

Tactical adaptability is what we expect and of course luck. The team is over loaded in every department but how do we map out the best strategy and win against Ghana?

Most importantly Nigeria must play the first game in Ghana as if there would be no second leg. We must attack them snd fight to finish at Cape Coast

My recommendation to Super Eagles technical crew is to prepare well for this encouter versus Ghana; so I think also the tech. crew must overhaul SE tactical styleon playing with three defensive midfielders or tow defensive midfielders with giving them drastic insturctions to be still existent on thier defensive side without moving through deep center that means they must hinder and stop any shooting from distance by rival’s attackters or stoping any counter attackt by Ghananian attackters; with this tactic SE can keep thier goal devoid and free from goals; also on attckting side tech. crew must play on couter attackt with exploiting his pace and cleverness to score goals; tech. crew must play with tow attackters like Osimhen and Igalo or Sadiq Umar or with one attackter just Osimhen.Technical crew must recall strong defensive midfielders like Vincent Onovo, Anderson Esiti, Samsun Tijani than to recall Etebo, Shehu Abdullahi, Onyeka because they are weak and committ many fouls on 18 line also they are succumbed to the rival’s pressing , SE defensive midfielders must press and be combative versus Ghanian attackters.

For along time Super Eagles have been lacking defensive mentality which has cost them many matches whom have been beaten;Mr. Greenturf you said a wrong talking about Anderson Esiti , if he is not playing football now but he has experience and strength to play in SE; look at Ozurnwafor he has been recalled to a friendly match for SE then he has done his best football than experts colleauges like Omeruo , Troost Ekong; so the consideration on how to prepare and overhaul the player when he is recalled to SE , look for Troost Ekong he was bad at Premiere leauge , but when he came to SE for Afcon. in Cameroon he was overhualed by SE technical crew then became better player on SE matches.
