Exclusive: 2026 WCQ; Rohr Will Be Waging War On Eagles –Akpoborie

Former Nigerian forward, Jonathan Akpoborie believes former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr will be waging war on Nigeria in a bid to prevent the team from qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Rohr, who qualified Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup, will be plotting with his new team Benin to stop the Eagles from flying all the way to the next World Cup.

The Franco-German coach was unceremoniously sacked late in 2021 after he had qualified Nigeria to the delayed AFCON in Cameroon.

Nigeria will face South Africa, Benin Republic, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Lesotho in Group C of the qualifiers for a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The winners of this group will qualify automatically for the World Cup, while the runners-up stand a chance to be involved in a playoff for an extra ticket for Africa.

In a chat with Completesports.com, Akpoborie stated that Nigeria should prepare for a major battle with Rohr’s Benin because they will be coming for revenge.

“There will be a major battle in the group and that will definitely be with Gernot Rohr’s Benin. He will be coming with the hope of preventing the Super Eagles from qualifying for the 2026 World Cup because of the way he was treated while he was head coach of Nigeria.

“He will wage war on Eagles and I expect the Nigeria Football Federation to prepare the team adequately for the qualifying campaign.”

AS A FOCUS MAN, SERIOUS & BUSINESS MINDED PRESIDENT, I WILL LIKE TO ADVICE OUR MR. PRESIDENT AHMED TINUBU TO DISSOLVE NFF AND BAN SUPER EAGLE IN PARTICIPATING IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS. I SAID SO DUE TO UNSERIOUSNESS OF OUR PLAYERS ON THE FIELD OF PLAY ON ONE SIDE AND MORE ALSO, DUE TO CORRUPTION & UNSERIOUSNESS OF NFF ON OTHER SIDE.
DOING SO, THIS WILL HELP THE NATION MASSIVELY, IN ORDER TO AVOID MONEY WASTING WITHOUT ACHIEVING RESULTS FOR ECONOMIC BENEFITS TO THE NATION.
ANOTHER REASON BEHIND THIS IS THAT, WE CAN IMAGINE OUR SUPER EAGLE’S TEAM IS CURRENTLY WITHOUT A COACH. IF WE HAVE, WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE TO PROVE THE VALIDITY OF THE CONTRACT OF SUCH COACH. AND WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS IS AROUND THE CORNER. THAT SHOWS UNSERIOUSNESS ON THE SIDE OF FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT OF THE NATION. IS IT WHEN QUALIFIERS REMAIN A MONTH WILL NOW VALIDATE THE CONTRACT OF THE COACH OR LOOKING FOR A NEW COACH. BY NOW A SUBSTANTIVE COACH SUPPOSE TO BE FOCUS & BEGIN TO STRATEGISE HIS PLAN TOWARDS AFCON & WOTLD CUP QUALIFIERS.
ALTHOUGH, IT NEVER TOO LATE NOW, THERE IS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.

It’s just standard. As a professional he will do what is necessary to get his team the ticket.
Well you shouldn’t have fired him,a sack that was unjustified.

  • Toothless dog. The man that coached Nigeria Super Eagles for six years with no trophy to show.

    • Hi Godstate,

In fairness to Rohr, Nigeria only participated in 2 tournaments during his reign: 2018 World Cup and 2019 Afcon. In the first one we were whiskers away from qualifying for the second round and we attained a podium finish in the Afcon after a 4 year hiatus from the tournament.

During Rohr’s reign, Nigeria participated in 3 qualification competitions (2018 World Cup, 2019 Afcon and 2022 Afcon qualifiers). Nigeria “won” all those qualifier competitions. If trophies were given for those qualifiers, that would have made it 3 out of 3 qualifier trophies for Nigeria.

I am a bona-fide Rohr critic. But that doesn’t blind me to the positive aspects of his reign as Nigeria coach.

If there was trophy for Qualifiers then Rohr will not qualify Nigeria because he doesn’t know how to win trophies.

And SUPER EAGLES will not be READY for the KIND of WAR GENERAL ROAR will bring

Even with the worst of Coaches Nigeria will never loose to Rohr. I’m not a Gambler but on that day I will learn how to gamble. Nigeria will win Home and Away!!!

    • Chima E Samuels 1 year ago

That is if Benin doesn’t get rid of him before then because he is almost losing out of Afcon.

      • Lord AMO 1 year ago

But @Chima, he was hired mid-way through the campaign with Benin already doing poorly.  He’s somehow managed to string enough results whereby they stand a chance to qualify on the last matchday with a victory.  So how is it that you believe his position as head coach of Benin is untenable?

Pride and arrogance always comes before great humiliation.
Comments like Nigeria can never lose to Rohr are based on irrational pride. If it was 100% impossible to defeat Nigeria, Rohr and Benin will not bother to play the qualifiers. They are going to play us because they have a chance, no matter how small that chance is. And with our administration not in order, their chance is even bigger.
I hope we qualify for the world cup, because it would be a huge set back if we don’t. But to dismiss Rohr as a threat is like the ostrich that sees danger and sticks its head in the sand. Sticking your head in the sand does not eliminate the threat. Taking practical steps to contain and subdue the threat makes more sense.
Benin is not our only problem. SA is also a good team. The other teams in the group also want to make a name for themselves and better their lives. Beating a team like Nigeria alone can put a player in the shopping window for a better club. And qualifying for the world cup? That’s life changing. All these teams want that, and they will give Nigeria a good fight for the world cup ticket.
If we want it, we have to do what is necessary to get it!

It’s not about beating Benin, it’s about beating an incompetent and inconsistent coach Rohr who got himself corrupted by DW and NFF.

      • pompei 1 year ago

My man, competence is when you do your job reasonably well. Rohr did not win any trophy, but he achieved all his targets while on the Nigeria job. Given more time and freedom, he might very well have won a trophy. That’s competence. Not excellence (Rohr was not and is not excellent). But he ticks the competence box.
Consistent is when you achieve results regularly and repeatedly. Again, Rohr did this, qualifying us for tournaments with games to spare over and over and over again.
We stopped using calculators because Rohr was so consistent and competent.
So I respectfully disagree with you sir. With Nigeria, Rohr was consistent and competent.

        • Chima E Samuels 1 year ago

Any target below trophy and loosing to strange teams playing badly in front of home fans is not something Nigeria needs. He’s not a Brilliant Coach he is average sometimes I can’t understand why he qualifies but doesn’t do well at the tournament. If he had remained it would have been worst for Nigeria because he started loosing against small teams and causing high pressure for onlookers. Him and Peseiro are just the same!!!!

Keep ranting like a mad dog. Rohr will be your greatest nightmare. If you like let your NFF not prepare the eagles well for the party, you will see your eagles dancing naked in front of Benin and south Africa.

Football matches have never been won by emotions.

Oga Rohr doesn’t have what it takes to beat Nigeria except if Eagles intentionally gives the match away.

Oga Rohr’s team may try to upset the Super Eagles, but I don’t think they have what it’s required to do it.

If Oga is that good, why did we not beat Cameroon in their backyard?

South Africa beat our darling Super Eagles in front of you and I but the former tactician couldn’t do anything.

We had good players during his time, but he failed to deliver, and now that is coaching a lesser team, I don’t think he can do anything close to when he was with us.

No disrespect to Oga Rohr. But I am not really bothered about Oga Rohr and his team.

If we make it to the 2026 world cup it’s definitely depends on how NFF approaches each match.

I love Oga Rohr and his team, and I wish them good luck, but by God’s grace, Nigeria will qualify to the World Cup. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Dr. Drey 1 year ago

Hahahaha…..”…Oga Rohr doesn’t have what it takes to beat Nigeria except if Eagles intentionally give the match away…”

So I guess all the teams he defeated while in charge of the SE too also intentionally gave their matches away.

Senegal too must have also intentionally given their recent qualifier vs Benin away….LMAOooo

It was people like you who would attribute his victories while in charge of the SE solely down to the players’ efforts and attribute losses solely to Rohr….I wonder why the players’ efforts alone didn’t save you from the disgrace of being booted out of the last AFCON and World cup by the weakest teams both nations have parraded in decades…..LMAooo

Rohr didn’t need to beat Cameroon in Yaoundé to prove he is good. Qualifying for the 2018 World Cup unbeaten with a team ranked 70th on the FIFA rankings from a group that had Cameroon (incumbent African Champions), Algeria (immediate future African champions) and Zambia (recent previous African champion) with a game to spare and 2 points deduction already proved he is…….It was the worst Ghanian team in half a century that a combination of your Mr No nonsense tin-god Eguavoen, Mr tactical-sagacity Amuneke and 9 local mumus couldnt defeat whether at home or away from home to qualify us for the 2022 world cup……LMAOoo

Rohr lost to South Africa in front of us, but still qualified top of the group for 2019 AFCON with a game to spare right there in South Africa’s home ahead of South Africa. Siasia didnt lose any match at home yet couldn’t qualify for ordinary AFCON in 2012…..Keshi didnt lose to South Africa at home yet couldnt make it to 2015 AFCON (in a group that had South Africa, Congo (Not DR Congo o), and Sudan, we couldnt make 2nd place)…..Oliseh didnt lose any match at home yet ran away when he he was 100% sure of failure to qualify for ordinary AFCON lurking ahead…….LMAOoo. Siasia came back but couldn’t beat Egypt home or away.

I suppose we never had “good players in all these times”

It is Rohr that must beat a current defending African champion away after mauling them 4-0 on home soil to be considered “good enough” by a never-do-well like you……LMAooo.

    Indeed Rohr was Never good….!!!

Continue rambling in arrogance about having “talented players” and lets see where it will lead you.

It was the likes of Zimbabwe, Gabon, Rwanda and Angola we had in our group the last time we failed to qualify for the world cup b4 last year’s failure by your 9 local dunces who needed an experienced player on the bench to point their attention to the fact that Ghana had changed tactics.

Funny enough, we only lost 1 away match in that 2006 qualifiers yet didnt make the world cup.

Drop points senselessly and arrogantly in this 2026 WC qualifiers and see if you will not pay dearly for it.

Every available record shows we have always struggled to defeat Benin republic…..so if you like wave them away with eyes closed because “…Oga Rohr doesn’t have what it takes to beat Nigeria except if Eagles intentionally gives the match away….”

Infact the fact that your Eagles have the ability, possibility and potential of intentionally giving matches away should be a thing of worry for you as we go into the qualifiers, if at all you had some sense.

Bonuses unpaid since 2021 and a team that is currently coachless as we speak and weak in all areas except attack is what you should busy yourself with and not poking your nose into Rohr’s affairs.

Some people just choose to remain Silly. I just pray the coming back of Rohr won’t be our Nemesis.
A pay back for sacking an innocent coach. Rohr is not a good coach, he couldn’t win the World Cup ahead of France in 2018 and allowed the eventual winner of 2019 nations cup (Algeria) to beat us in semifinal. If Senegal that got beaten twice by Algeria in that very tournament sack their coach, how will they become the eventual winner of the last edition?
Give me the name of any coach in the world that can win a World Cup and a Nations cup under the supervision of the criminals we call our handlers? Just name one single coach.
Between Paseiro And Rohr, which one is better? I just pray we will qualify cos I can’t imagine Nigeria missing two consecutive World Cup tournament. The only body that deserve insults now is our handlers and not Rohr … he tried.
