Exclusive: Friendly: Unuanel Delighted With Eagles Performance Against Mexico

Former Kwara United coach, Samson Unuanel has commended the performance of the Super Eagles despite losing 2-1 to Mexico in an international friendly game.

Santiago Gimenez opened the scoring for Mexico in the 12th minute before the Super Eagles leveled the scoreline in the 54th minute through their first opportunity on target. Following a well-placed cross from Calvin Bassey, Cyriel Dessers forced an error from Mexican goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota, who fumbled the ball into his net.

Reacting to the performance, Unuanel in a chat with Completesports.com stated that he’s impressed with the display of the players against Mexico.

“This is an improved performance from the Super Eagles against Mexico.

“I am also delighted with the general performance of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players that featured in that game.

“This is just the way forward for our football and I pray and hope that with this performance better things will come to the team.”

The Super Eagles next face Ecuador in another friendly game on Thursday.

  • Thank God that I woke up to watch the match.

There is hope for Supe eagles now.

Though, we lost due to defensive errors but with what I saw in the match, I can now say that we have coach that can read matches and make positive changes.
The result would have been draw if not for the mistake from our defender. At the same time we all know that nobody is above mistake.

God bless Super Eagles of Nigeria

God bless our new coaching crew.

    God bless Nigeria.

It can now only keep on getting better.

    • Your problem is simply slave mentality. When Francis Uzoho made similar mistake that qualified Ghana for the World Cup, you all called for his head because then, we had a domestic coach who is now the techical director of the federation, Austin Eguavoen. Here you are, praising a foreign coach despite losing to a second rated Mexican team. What if we were playing against Mexican 1st team? The only players we missed in the were Odion, Osimhen, Chukwueze and Amoo(inview).

      • That is the bitter mentality for you.

Even if Ecuador beat the SE in their next match, you will still hear the agitating to nowhere saying lets give the peseiro more time instead of calling for his sack.

Former coach Eguavoen and Amuneke played 7 matches and lost only once and the same idiot made Amuneke to lose his post by calling for his head.

I hope peseiro wins his next match otherwise there will be media protest to relieve him of the job.

I appreciate the inclusion of Bassey.

      • @Mike, I know your type. Most of you condemning this new coach were snoring when the match was going on. You woke up this morning heard the result and come here to comment with you backward way of thinking.

        Kindly note the following:
        1. The two goals were defensive errors and Uzoho that you tagged bad made a lot of saves.
        2. Peseiro just resume not up to a week. His 1st time of seeing both the players and the coaching crew was less than 48 hours to the kickoff.
        3. 90 percent of the players have been selected and called to camp before his appointment.

So before you condemn the new coach, think and compare the change in tactics and performance of the players in the second half of the match to the first half.

We are too impatient with Super Eagles and that’s what land us in this mess.

Super eagles will surely rise again.

Either you and your other supporters like it or not I’m pleased with the performance of the coaching crew and believe that they will take Eagles to better level.

God bless Super Eagles of Nigeria.

        • Defensive errors indeed. So the one at Moshood Abiola that led to sacking of Amuneke was attacking error, abi? Probably due to inferiority complex that the white skin is better will some of you remain idiots. If it is true you indeed watched the match, and looking at tactics, the mexican team of this morning wasn’t upto the Pharaohs of Egypt that Eguavoen kept in sit at home format in cameroon and the mighty Mosalah completely locked down in the entire duration. Mexican didn’t have a player of Mosalah caliber but they have more than 10 begging chances. Peseiro just have to perform or he gets out for Finidi.

          • Correction… they had*

          • Mike and Dayo….Hmmmm… Una try o….Your Eguavoen who is always seeking relevance is clueless… and your Amunike is very unfortunate to be at the right place at the wrong time.

      • You called Mexico 2nd rated team ???? They are 11th in fifa ranking ,,,you full team can not even beat Ghana which is somewhere in fifa ranking ..are u telling me now like of Senegal etc are 2nd rated team which below Mexico in fifa ranking.precice Mexico make to world cup every time ..

Ode, Mexico is no9, FIFA. Mike said they used their 2nd eleven team to defeat preseiro team. It that too difficult for to understand?

Mexico is 9th in the world

      • For your information 9 players withdrew, Austin Eguavoen lost to Tunisia who is ranked 35th, Mexico is 9th in the world for your information

Though we played against mexican 2nd eleven, the boys did well. I will single out Iwobi, Bassey, Dessers and the Egiavoen local league players. That was massive. God bless Nigeria and Goodluck next time.

    • Matthew 2 years ago

See this mugu, you couldn’t win an ordinary second team and called that massive. Peseiro my foot. Sometimes i wonder why nff didn’t contract cocu.

  • Fanny Atiti 2 years ago

The boys tried anyways but a local coach would have won that match. Seyi Olofijana to me is better than cocu. I really feel it is not late to revert back to a domestic coach for the Eagles.

    • NNAMDI 2 years ago

which one be cocu again our new gaffer is peseiro not cocu

  • Before this criticism just know there was not enough time to blend and this a new set up, even the coach also,so why expect alot now… so it is baseless to judge them based on this whereas this is not our full squad either

  • Nigerians are confused people. How can we judge a new coaching crew with just one game . We are our own misfortune that is why we end up the way we are now as a nation . Smh

    • Yes, we are confused people, especially Mike and Dayo who are clueless just like their Eguavoen….
