EXCLUSIVE: Shorunmu Urges Nigerian League Goalkeepers To Believe In Themselves For National Success

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, has enjoined goalkeepers plying their trade in Nigerian leagues to work hard and believe in themselves as potential great national team assets, Completesports.com reports.

Shorunmu, also a former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Trainer, who is currently the Abia Warriors Goalkeeper Coach gave the advice while speaking with Completesports.com in Uyo recently where his club featured in and won the 2023 Tico/Select Preseason Tournament. He reiterated that coaches will do their best, but the rest depends on the players to deliver what they have been taught.

He reiterated that an improved Nigerian league would rub off positively on the national teams, especially in the goalkeeping department.

“The thing is, it is what we have that we are going to use. We cannot perform any magic at the moment that is why we come down to the league to work more with the goalkeepers in the league. And we can have better goalkeepers in the national team,” Shorunmu told Completesports.com.

“For sure we need to improve our league and we need to believe in ourselves and our players. Life changes, and I don’t want to compare this time with our own time. We need to work with what we have now and do better with it.

“I just want the home players to believe in themselves. We the coaches will do our part, but then the rest depends on the players. On the pitch, they are to deliver what they have been taught.”
