Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has said his team is still a work in progress.
Zubairu’s side recently won the title at the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Lome, Togo.
The holders defeated the Black Satellites of Ghana 2-1 in the final.
The gaffer noted that there are critical areas he must work on despite his team’s success in Lome.
“I’m somewhat dissatisfied with our defence; we were conceding goals consistently. This vulnerability cannot be overlooked on a larger stage,” he made this statement during a meeting with members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter, in Ilorin on Monday.
Zubairu mentioned the challenges faced prior to the championship, including limited time for thorough scouting.
“I had just 37 days from my appointment to the WAFU B tournament, and we retained only three players from the previous squad, necessitating the recruitment of new talents,” he explained.

It’s like this Subaru get sense small.
I wish you all the best.
Now you have enough time to scout for players before u20 Afcon.
God bless the team.
The competition commence in January 2025 in South Africa and I hope the NFF will exhibit sense in arranging for early preparation which I am advocating should start now. This NFF will not allow for early preparation until late December 2024. Let keep fingers cross and watch.
Coach Aliyu Zubairu needs Vince Osuji of Karmar FF in Sweden and Benjamin Chiemela Fredrick of Brentford FC in England to complement the efforts of captain Daniel Bameyi of Bayelsa United in the Flying Eagles defence for the U20 AFCON in South Africa as well as the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile. Congratulations on retaining the WAFU B U20:title in Togo.
Nice one coach. Let your results do the talking. I remember how a lot of people rained abuse and curses on this coach when he lost his first match. I am happy how he silenced everyone with the WAFU cup….go and do it again at AFCoN coachy.
