Alize Cornet admits France “have to make a miracle” to beat Romania in the Fed Cup semi-final over the weekend. France, who last reached the final in 2016 when they finished runners-up to the Czech Republic, will have to get past a strong Romania team, led by world number two Simona Halep, if they are to reach the final this year.

Yannick Noah’s side, who beat Belgium 3-1 in the quarter-finals, will be spearheaded by Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic on clay in Rouen this weekend. Cornet, who is an alternate on the team, knows it will be difficult to get past Romania and believes a miracle will likely be needed.
“Romania are definitely one of the best teams in the world, especially when Simona is playing,” she was quoted as saying by www.insidethegames.biz. “I read that it was one of her main goals this year to win Fed Cup so I guess she is going to be very motivated.
“They also have other good players such as [Mihaela] Buzarnescu and [Irina-Camelia] Begu. Their team is very compact so I think we almost have to make a miracle to win. “But we’ve done that before so, hopefully, we can do it again.”
